I’m worried about this movie focusing on Mater. Not that I don’t like Mater, but that’s what all those short films he got were for. I want to see the continued adventures of Lightning McQueen…with his buddy Mater at his side.
I agree with The Chicken man. He took the words right out of my mouth.
I strongly agree…
OT:ChickenMan,where have you been “duuuuuuuude”!?
TCM, I see your point, and I agree. Hopefully they won’t crown the wrong king.
(I love PPT’s new avatar )
Did you guys read the press release? It looks like Lightning and Mater are going to be doing two seprate things but it’s going to be around Mater…Pixar if you do this I will hate you forever!!! Just kidding, but I will HATE Mater forever!!!This is ridiculous…why does it have to be Mater,WHY!!!
Agreed with TCM. I think the Pixarians find Mater funnier than he really is.
Yeah they need to realize that his shorts are crap and a movie about him will not be good.
Im oficcially worried
See there, that’s what I was saying all along, this is why I said what I said a few post pages earlier…shakes headPixar if you think this is going to be a better film putting Mater as the main character, you are sadly mistaken…
We get it, some people don’t like Mater. He’s going to have a big part in Cars 2. Don’t like it? Don’t see it. Problem solved.
Get over it.
Jessie, don’t start…I knew you were going to say that that’s why I came back on here, yeah I don’t like Mater, and yeah were dissapointed, seriously you can’t tell people to get over something,if were angry about it were angry about it,I’m trying to be as nice as I can but it’s starting to annoy me when you say stuff like that…
Yeah, I gotta say I agree with The Chicken Man on this. I like Mater, but he really is just better as a side character. I can’t imagine him leading the story. Not to use cliché’d phrases or anything, but I guess Pixar would know how to work it better than me…
I agree in a lot of things said here and in other forums, but disagree in one.
Yes, I agree. Mater isn’t the best character Pixar has created. And yes, maybe pixarians love him more than he deserves, but hey, George Lucas also has a fondness for Jar-Jar, and we know the public hates him.
Yes, I agree. The first Cars was the weakest Pixar movie to date, so there are some reasons to be worried about a sequel.
Yes, I agree. The trailer hasn’t shown anything that can lift our hopes about the movie (but the wonderful concept art did, I think).
But there’s one very important thing some of us are forgetting. Since their slight failure with Cars (and it was very slight), all Pixar films have been masterpieces. MASTERPIECES, and widely recognized as such. After everything they’ve done, I think they deserve our trust for a very long time.
So let’s take a leap of faith. Let’s see the movie before stating we won’t like it, and let’s welcome all their decisions until we watch them on screen, because most times, they play out much better than we think.
I believe in Pixar. And I know most of you do too
That’s a good comparison to Jar-Jar, SoA. I never thought of it that way before.
Personally I don’t see why people dislike Mater being the focus of the story. Lightning already had his character development arc in the first film, so maybe the Pixarians want to focus on a different character this time?
As for him being annoying, yes, he may not be the sharpest character in town. But is that reason enough to hate him for it? I really don’t want to play the ‘intelligence card’ here, but we all ain’t Einsteins or perfect in every mental faculty, so why the hypocrisy?
My rule of thumb is as long as a character is not a total jerk (like Chick Hicks), it doesn’t matter whether he is ‘stupid’, ‘retarded’ or ‘annoying’, as long as his/her heart is in the right place, I’m all for more screentime for that character. In fact, I believe that eccentrics make much more interesting characters to develop in a story, because then you get to place them in an environment and see how they cope with it. If you put say, Superman, Sherlock Holmes or Conan the Barbarian in a dangerous situation, you’re sure they’re going to come out the other side the same person with nary a scratch. But things would get more interesting if you threw The Tramp (Charlie Chaplin’s character), “Howling Mad” Murdock or Monk (the OCD detective) into the same predicament, you can be sure they’ll have a tougher time and will emerge a changed person (at the very least, with a few bruises).
I think the Pixarians are trying to do the same thing here. Chuck Mater into the deep end and see how he handles it. I do agree that he gets most of the screentime in the shorts and all that, but I’m sure they’ll balance the sequel film with other characters’ developments (and possibly develop Lightning and Sally’s relationship at the same time).
Besides, as I’ve already mentioned, we already saw Lightning’s personal journey in the first film. I’m sure he’ll have his own arc in the second, but it’s time for a new paradigm shift or we’re gonna have another Shrek franchise (where it’s the same person being ‘transformed’ in every film). I’m very excited to see how the tow truck becomes the “world’s greatest secret agent”, according to the teaser.
Two things; The characters you gave examples on were main characters, not overrated sidekicks. My thing is why are they focusing on Mater this much?Just because his stinkin merchindise sell’s?Maternational,Mater’s Tall Tales,Mater the spy…don’t you see what’s happning here?Cars toons is enough Mater,we don’t need more.A sequel is designed to get a “update” on all the characters, not just some overrated attention hoggin Tow-Truck…Look at Toy story, did they just focus on Buzz Lightyear and Woody? No ,they included the other characters in the bunch too,and besides this sounds like it’s going to be comedy hour anyway, instead of a emotional story, with them showing Mater in all…
xCarsluverx=Anti-Mater,and proud…
Besides , why would they do a sequel about a character that almost all pixar fans find overrated or hate? have you seen mater crap tales? they SUCK , now imagine a 2 hours movie about the most annoying pixar character ever.
YEAH!!!High five!!
And who said that won’t happen?
Hey, guys. As I said before, we’re assuming a lot. They haven’t revealed almost anything, so everything here is just guessing.
I don’t like Mater more than the next person, but I’ll give it a chance until I see the movie, or at leas actual footage.
Remember, it’s PIXAR we are talking about. They know about this business more than all of us blend together, so…
I’ve decided I don’t care which direction they take the movie in. I’m going to see it anyway, so I’ll stop fussing about possible outcomes(especially ones that were entirely designed by the members here.)
Maybe it would be better if your points were phrased in a more matured manner without resorting to name-calling or grand assumptions? I know you’re trying to say that he already had enough screentime and merchandise appearances, but that’s no reason to claim “almost all pixar fans” hate him or call him an “overrated attention hoggin Tow-Truck”.
And as Spirit of Adventure said, who’s to say that other characters won’t get their own plot developments (which I also asked in my previous post)? Again, this is not a personal attack on any of you, but rather I’m seeking to question your arguments.
Also, my points on 'flawed and fallible characters make more interesting plotlines" was not addressed.
Seriously.
Thank you. Cars was made for little kids. I don’t know any little kid who doesn’t like Mater, so they’re doing something right. Therefore, Mater has a higher role. Besides, even if they flop, they’re set for life with the amount of money Toy Story 3 brought in. Not that they weren’t set for life before.
So do yourself a favor and don’t see it.
…pretty much? Sure they showed other characters, but honestly, I think the majority of the people think about those two when they think of Toy Story. Much like Lightning and Mater to Cars.
Every movie doesn’t have to be a sob story. Or since you only like Lightning and Sally, a romance.
I don’t see why either.
As for Mater, we all know he always has his heart in the right place.
Trust me, I’m sure there’s going to be enough Lightning McQueen to go around for everyone. After all, hello? He was the main character in the first one. A story can have two main characters.
