I know how you feel. It’s kind of frustrating to see a character who doesn’t seem strong enough to lead the film become the protagonist. We can’t say for sure the whole movie will be based around him alone, or whether Pixar is doing it because his merchandise sells. Perhaps the Pixarians honestly (and rather misguidedly) thought he was worthy to have an adventure of his own for the sequel. Maybe his adventure will be one of the many plot arcs (we won’t know the full extent of his screentime, or whether other characters’ stories will or won’t be expanded).
For people who aren’t fans of Mater, I hope Pixar can reach a compromise where other characters get their own developments without detracting from the main story too much. It’s like Toy Story 3, while the story was mostly centered on Woody coming to terms with his owner moving on, the other toys also have their own ‘story arcs’. So hopefully Pixar can achieve the same balance for Cars 2.
I dont have a problem with Mater’s Tall Tales. I will say I dont really understand why they were made. Maybe its because Mater’s popular with the kiddies? Certainly seemed that way whenever I went to see the movie. The little kids seemed to love him.
Yes, I’ve seen some. I would lie if I said I watched the whole series, because I’ve never liked it much, but I saw some episodes.
First, I didn’t like the animation. So, is Buzz Lightyear actually based on that show? And the toy is way more detailed than the original character? No way. Besides, the Disney TV show style was far too evident for my tastes.
Second, the overall tone. It was much tongue in cheek for being the actual franchise that Buzz is based in. Zurg was degraded to a pathetic humorous villain (he’s funny and pathetic in the movie too, but in a totally different way). The Aliens and Pizza planet can’t belong to the same universe as Buzz, so the canon is also doubtful.
And, well, thought it had a lot of potential as a science fiction series, I think it wasn’t exploited by the writers, who instead focused in the Saturday morning comedy aspect.
It wasn’t bad, maybe. But I don’t like it as a part of the Buzz Lightyear legacy. If the main character was someone else and the series weren’t related to the Toy Story franchise, it would be much better.
