Well sometimes people can love movies for illogical reasons. I love Cars because I thought it was a great movie, didn’t mind the ‘predictability’, didn’t think it was too simplistic… BUT also connected personally with the story. Which was the point of Cars, to tell a personal story. And a lot of people love ‘awful’ movies because it holds personal meaning to them. I love Cars because I think it’s a great story AND because it holds personal meaning.
Perhaps the ‘problem’ with Cars is that while it is a great, cute, inspirational story… maybe it isn’t relatable enough to EVERYONE. Most of the complaints I hear are “I DIDN’T LIKE MATER!” (and those complaints, I ignore) and “It was slow.” or “I couldn’t get into it.”.
Cars was slow on purpose, inspirationally ‘predictable’ on purpose… it wasn’t some big action movie that needed a surprise ending. It was like a romantic comedy in the sense that you KNOW what’s going to happen in the end and yet you’re so interested to see HOW it will end up that way. At least to me, the ‘predictability’ was okay for this reason. And I never expected Doc to be the caller! That was a twist! But anyway…
Cars was a really ‘personal’, heartfelt story that, yeah, if you couldn’t get into the characters or the message… wouldn’t interest you. But the reason so many people DO love it is because they could really really relate.
I suppose I can level with you since there is a good handful of widely unappreciated films out there that I know and love.
I’m starting to go cross-eyed with these posts - maybe we should just stop this senseless jibber-jabber - I’m allowed to say I didn’t like Cars much at all (though there are two characters in the film I love) and I’m not going to say Cars 2 is bad until I see it with my own eyes.
I don’t think it’s just senseless jibber jabber and a friendly debate doesn’t have to mean that we’re trying to prove each other wrong or down the other’s opinion. I just like talking things out because when we form our own opinions, we form them based upon one perception- our own… Listening to someone elses opinion forces us to re-evaluate our own and we often find we’ve ‘missed something’.
I just wanted to make you think because, well, I think people tend to be too harsh on Cars. But when I talk to people who didn’t really like Cars, I also try to see why that is and sometimes I do have to admit to a flaw- with other movies too of course. Anyway.
I hope you didn’t get upset about this or anything because when I won’t back down, it isn’t to insult someone, I just like pushing the boundaries of thought. But I guess people- well, even people who DO know me, don’t really realize why I do what I do and sometimes things can get a little heated. Sorry if I went too hard on you.
A113: Why do you always need to make your font big? =P No offense, but … it’s obnoxious.
I’m not doubting Pixar - I’m doubting that a second Cars would actually go over well. I know I don’t know anything about the film and that’s why I said, several times, that I wouldn’t say anything bad about it till I see it. How many times do I have to say this?
Hog-Hug: If I tried to convince you to like something I liked, I bet you wouldn’t. Insisting that it’s good and continuously restating things isn’t going to help me or make me re-evaluate my opinions, because I just clam up when someone insists that I like something I already don’t. I feel as if I’m being forced to think a certain way, and I hate that.
In conclusion - I don’t care much for Cars but hope the best for the second.
Which is actually the lowest percentage on RT for any Pixar film, ever. The next lowest film is A Bug’s Life with 91%, which is a pretty big margin.
Look, I’m not saying Cars isn’t a good film on its own (it’s a quite good film when compared to some other kids films), I’m just saying it’s the least best Pixar film - I don’t want to say “worst” since it isn’t that bad of a movie, it’s just not up to par with other Pixar films. You expect a certain level of quality from Pixar, and when a film doesn’t live up to that, yet still gets a sequel, you have to wonder why…
And my theory is that it did surpass anyone’s expectations in the merchandising department, and if a sequel was released the same thing would happen again, which equals more money. That’s the reason for the sequel. Not that it deserves one, or anyone is eager to know what happens next in the world of Cars, because by the sounds of members here, we aren’t.
Personally I don’t care what the critics say about Cars, I love Cars and to be honest I enjoy Cars more than I enjoy The Incredibles or even Ratatouille. If someone were to ask me to pick an absolute favorite Pixar film, I would probably pick Finding Nemo. But if someone asked me to pick ONLY ONE Pixar movie to watch for the rest of my life, I honestly COULD NOT PICK one. Toy Story was integral to my childhood, A Bug’s Life was too… Monsters is brilliant, I think Finding Nemo has the best story… Cars was integral to the last part of my life… they all mean a lot to me and I enjoy them so much and I think they’re all great movies- so I really couldn’t choose ONE.
And then, if I had to choose a film to call the ‘least best’ it wouldn’t be Cars, and it wouldn’t be A Bug’s Life either. I’d probably give Cars a 90% and I do have my reasons for considering it to be a great movie, it isn’t that I just like it and therefore think it should be considered a great movie. (If you get what I mean by that. I hate it when people judge the worth of a movie by “I liked it therefore it was good!” or “I hated it therefore it was bad!” for example a lot of people think I’m crazy for calling Happy Feet a HORRIBLE movie because they “thought it was cute!” but you know, cute =/= a good movie. ANYWAY!)
The “it’s the least best” argument will just never work on me, because I don’t think it was the least best. That’s what I’m trying to say. XD Hopefully I didn’t word everything too confusingly.
*Also I want to point out that many Pixar fans here have expressed that they don’t want another Cars, but you’re ignoring the many that said they do. A substantial amount of members have argued in favor of Cars 2, and I know I’m not the ONLY one looking forward to it. Just sayin’!
I have a very, very big feeling Cars 2 isn’t just for merchandising profits but to redeem themselves for their “least best film”. I think Pixar felt the reaction and reviewed their choices and thought making a sequel better than the original can make up for the first. On top of that they can take advantage of the merchandising. That’s the secondary motivation, for Pixar at least… Disney’s another story. I myself didn’t initially like Cars, only because I put it in my head that I WOULDN’t like it BEFORE I saw it, bad choice, never doing that again, so anyways after I watched it numerous times, then I was sure of how much I like that movie, so for me a sequel is ok, as long as it’s by the terms listed above.
I am WAAAAAAAY over 10 and find that I relate better to the cars than to any other character ever…I guess working with the public I am just jaded with humans
Yeah, and I’m 18 and I can still relate to the characters. I think saying only 10 year olds can relate is kind of harsh. I personally thought the characters were pretty adult. Not McQueen or Mater, but they’re SUPPOSED to be young and a bit naive. Well, Mater is more innocent than naive. And McQueen is more ignorant. Every hero starts out young and stupid.
I, too, resent that. I may not be eighteen, I am sixteen, and I can relate to the characters of the movie as well. I, too, think, for the most part the characters were adult-like.
Nobody has to exaggerate their points. We get it. You don’t like Cars… But really that sounds like it has nothing to do with the people who actually like Cars and more towards your curiosity and frustration that a lot of people here at Pixar Planet like a movie you don’t really care for. There are other fourms to films more suited to your liking… if you wish. But I’d say we need less negative input and more positive stuff…because really…if you have nothing good to say then they’re isn’t any reason to post here. Disrespectful posts are not needed.
(Hey Guys- I know my opinion has become a bit unpopular here, but I thought of this and thought I’d share it anyway.)
I seem to recall a certain situation playing out between the Toys of Andy’s bedroom and Woody & Buzz during the first Toy Story.
After Woody ‘shoved’ Buzz out of the window, most of the toys immediately assumed it was on purpose. Bo and Slinky were slower to assume, until Woody showed up in Sid’s room with Buzz’s disembodied arm. That was it, that was proof positive to even Slink that Woody had lost it.
But NONE of the other toys could see what we, the audience could. They weren’t in on the secret, so they could only assume. But in the end, they all realized that Woody’s intentions were never really to hurt Buzz. They had assumed wrong- even the hard ‘truth’ that Woody had taken Buzz’s arm turned out to be a misunderstanding. And of course, the toys felt horrible after they realized what had really happened.
Sometimes things look and sound much much worse than they actually are. Sometimes things will happily surprise you. Sometimes you’ve just gotta’ have a little faith.
(And that’s my bit. I know everyone’s begging me to shut up. )
