Cars 2 : Is it a good or bad thing?

The idea of social maturity is interesting, TurnRightGoLeft. I guess everyone watches Cars and thinks that the character of Lightning McQueen has gone as far as he can go in terms of a circular development, but perhaps he can reach a higher level, as you put it.

And welcome to the boards!

Good.

A second chance could always make things better.

Personally I would go to see Cars 2, but what I really want to see is a sequel to The Incredibles!!! I mean come on! That movie was just begging for a sequel!!!

yeah, a sequel would be great. i’ve heard something about it being released in 2012 or something. it was on wikipedia

Incredibles 2 hasn’t been confirmed. I think the Pixar release for 2012 is either Cars 2 or Newt? I used to know the order, but I think they recently switched it around. Anyway, the only sequel that has been confirmed is Cars 2. There haven’t even been talks about Incredibles 2 released, so don’t get your hopes too high. ): (Not so soon, anyway.)

I think Cars 2 will be a complete success. Nothing more to really say until i see a trailer.

But im very excied!

Oh dear, an Incredibles 2?
There’s Toy Story 2 and 3, Monsters Inc 2, and now an Incredibles 2?

I hope they stop making so many 2’s.

At least no more of all the good ones. Just let Cars have one to let it get better, IMO it wasn’t as good as the others.

I agree, but I’ve never heard of a Monster’s Inc. 2 before! Anyway, I don’t think it says anything about the Incredibles 2 any more, it was probably someone just making it up.

Oh good, hopefully it’s another rumor, really NO OFFENSE towards Incredibles fans. Just want Pixar to stop with the sequels at Monsters Inc 2 and the Dreamworks syndrome.

Monster’s Inc 2 hasn’t been confirmed. I think it’s safe to say if Pixar plans any more sequels, we won’t be seeing them for a long time. I think the line up is Up, TS3, Cars 2, and then Newt and Bear and the Bow sometime after. Even if they do make more sequels, they won’t be released for at least four years so I wouldn’t worry too much about it now. (Myself, I hope they don’t decide to sequel Monsters OR Incredibles or any of their others. But if they do, I’ll keep an open mind. Especially is TS3 and Cars 2 are as good as I think they’re going to be.)

I’m going to say that it’s a good thing. Cars is one of my favorite Pixar movies.

I’m not entirely sure. I would watch it because it’s Pixar and all, but just not in the theaters… yet Idk. Don’t get me wrong Cars was good and I enjoyed it, but it felt like it was lacking a little something to me. I just didn’t enjoy it as much as I enjoyed all the other Pixar movies. As I would normally put it…

“It’s lacking some flavor that the other movies had.”

I’m pretty sure that it will still be a good sequel and I’m hoping that it will keep us Pixar fans happy.

KarmaWolf: I know what you mean about Cars. I used to be crazy obsessed about that movie (not sure why), but after it came out on DVD and I watched it several times over, it seemed so much more slow than when I had seen it at the movies. If a sequel were to come out, though, I would probably be a bit skeptical about it… but I would probably end up watching it anyways. :unamused:

Oh, and welcome to the forums!! Hope you have a great time with the rest of us crazy Pixar geeks!

I think Cars 2 is a great idea! Many people connected to the movie in a very emotional way. I think it would probobaly have the largest fan base of any Pixar film. If there is any Pixar movie that deserves a sequel it’s Cars.

I agree!

I’ve just read this whole forum from start to finish, and I don’t know why I haven’t read it before. I need to stand up for my favorite movie! I just can’t sit back and let it be trashed. Here are my reasons for a sequal.

1.) The whole critics thing. Sure it wasn’t the best movie with the critics, but did any of you ever think of this? PIXAR MAKES MOVIES FOR THE FANS! NOT THE CRITICS! So what if it got a 75% on Rotten Tomatoes, the worst Pixar movie rating (second being A Bugs Life with 91%) That doesn’t matter. Critics don’t make up most of the audience. The Pixar fans do.

2.) The age (and gender to some extent) idea. While it is sterotypical that people think that Cars is mainly for boys under 10, here’s something for you. Go onto fanfiction.net and go to the Cars community. Fanfiction is for people that are 13 and older. And according to statistics, it is mostly made up of girls. And there are 451 fanfics for Cars on there, (second place to The Incredibles) so there are lots of older Cars fans, including girls. And I am one of them. So don’t think this movie is just for kids and that’s why you don’t want a sequal. There were adult references too in the movie. The whole, “I’d give my left two lug nuts for something like that!” is completely adult. No kid would truely understand what the equivilant a lug nut would be to the human world. See. It wasn’t just for kids.

3.) Money, Merchandising, and Disney. I know most of you think that this is a Disney scheme for more merchandising and more money, but ever thought about this? Pixar stated they were against sequals. With that, they must have a good idea for making a Cars 2. Sure Disney is a corrupt must-make-cheepo-sequals-for-more-money company, but Pixar WOULD NOT have signed a contract to be a part of Disney if they were gonna let themselves be pushed around. And I know this is a little off-topic, but Disney did not push Pixar into making a Toy Story 3. They had the idea made after Toy Story 2, but they were already in trouble due to the fact that their original contract called for 5 ORIGINAL movies. So Toy Story 3 was already in the making. Getting back on topic, Disney did not push Pixar into making Cars 2. John Lasseter had the idea in his head when touring around for the international premiers of the movie. He wondered what it would be like for the characters to meet some of the strange cars and the whole driving-on-the-wrong-side-of-the-road thing. So like I said, Cars 2 is not at all Disney’s work. And sure the Cars merchandise sells, but that has nothing to do with it. Well, maybe except for Disney’s approval of a sequal this time.

4.) The Plot. I’ve noticed many of you said that the plot was either too boring or too slow or you didn’t get it, or you hate Lightning’s character. . .Sure. I understand. I’m one of those people that actually hates The Incredibles. And it’s got the biggest fan base of any Pixar movie. But it was only because I don’t like action-y movies so much. I do understand the whole character development, but really, it didn’t really grab me. Excuse me while I get back on topic. The plot of Cars was SUPPOSED to be slow. That was the main point. It was the best way of showing what Lightning was going through. They start you off with the action of racing, getting you thinking the movie is gonna be all fast-paced and exciting. Then when it throws you into Radiator Springs, it goes all slow, putting you, the audience, into Lightning’s position. See where I’m getting at? And for those of you who think Lightning doesn’t change soon enough, I’ll tell you all of the little parts where he does change. They may not be as noticable as after Doc tells Lightning about his past, but after this, you will see them. First is after he is thrown into the cactus patch. he doesn’t completely snap back at the townsfolk with their offers, but says no thanks (in an irritated voice still) After Mater tells Lightning that he made a good choice in his best friend, he is nicer then. He says thanks to Sally about letting him stay and even kinda compliments her on the place. And when they are up at the Wheel Well, Lightning listens to Sally when she talks about the town’s past. The Lightning in the beginning wouldn’t have bothered to listen. And the scene with the stampede. The old Lightning wouldn’t have went to get the tractor headed towards Willy’s Butte. I could list more, but I’m off-topic. As I said, the plot is good. Sure it may be wrapped up at the end, but they could expand. (If they couldn’t, why are there 451 fanfictions written about Cars?) There’s Lightning’s carreer, Lightning and Sally’s relationship. . .And as I’ve heard, even expanding backwards, telling more about their pasts. (Even though I do have a book that tells the backstories of some characters, it’s only a little bit. They don’t explain everything.) And for those who still think that Cars is too slow, they are going international. Maybe a hint at more action. And for those of you who think Cars just flat-out sucks, a sequal may be just what’s needed to try to make a comeback. Think about it.

That’s all I have. If I can think of any more points, I’ll bring them up. I know it’s long, but Cars is a really great movie, and a sequal is a good idea. I wasn’t gonna let it be trashed without my side of the argument to back it up.

Lightning and Doc:Thank You!I completely support those comments :-D) .Oh and also keep in mind that the Incredibles was 1hr and 55min also for those that think CARS is too slow. And in thinking about the critics I thought about what Anton Ego said in Ratatouille. The movie hasn’t even came out yet for crying out loud!

Those are some good points, LightningAnd Doc. I definitely agree with the first one- it’s Pixar’s choice what movies they want to make, and they definitely don’t make their movies for the critics. As they’ve said, they make the movies they’d want to sit and watch themselves, which is a really cool ethos in that sort of industry. And yeah, I never really got the vibe that Cars was just for boys…I mean, the subject matter is quite stereotypically boy-ish, but the inclusion of romance and the moral of the story means that both boys and girls can enjoy it. I would argue that it’s one of Pixar’s ‘younger’ films, as in, kids of a younger age can enjoy it perhaps more than something like WALL-E or Ratatouille, as the story itself is easier to engage with. That doesn’t mean adults can’t enjoy it as well, just that it’s appropriate for a very wide age range, which is no bad thing. And yep, I can’t see the merchandising being the sole reason why Pixar’s making this film. It might be good to earn the money to fund other projects, but Pixar wouldn’t make a film just to earn the bucks.

I agree up to there, but the plot is where I have problems with Cars 2. The plot of the original was fine, very good even- I didn’t think it was too slow, and I don’t think Lightning’s change was too gradual. I actually think Pixar handled that pretty well. I like Lightning as a main character, and the only characters I really dislike are Sally and Mater. Thing is, a good original plot does not therefore lead to a good sequel plot. I love most of Pixar’s films, if not all of them, but I wouldn’t say that just because they’re good that they should each have a sequel. Sometimes an original is so good, a sequel would spoil it. I think in the case of Cars, the original was good- perhaps not in comparison to other Pixar films, but in comparison to other films generally. But there’s just not enough there for a sequel to be necessary. The story of the original was fine by itself, as a compact thing, but nothing at the end of the film made me go, ‘you know, I’d really like to know what happened to so-and-so, because that storyline wasn’t completed’ or anything like that. It’s because the film is so good on its own that a sequel would, to me, feel like an unnecessary add-on.

I have a feeling that Cars 2 will be the type of movie where critics will say:
“If you loved Cars, you’ll love it, if you hated Cars, you’ll love it!”
I can only see Pixar improving on this already great film, even though it wasn’t as well liked by critics, it still got better reviews than most animated and live-action stuff, and if you take away Pixar’s record, you’ll see Cars got great standalone reviews. This movie would be the crown jewel of any other studio. Pixar’s just THAT good!

lizardgirl, I understand what you mean about how the movie did close well and it doesn’t necessarily need a sequal, but we all have our opinions. I’d just prefer a sequal. I don’t want to fight you or anything for you do see my points (to some extent), it’s just that in my opinion, I want a sequal. Sure it is good to have original stories too, it’s just that Cars to me is good enough for a sequal. I do appreciate how you do enjoy the movie though. At least you’re not one of those people who don’t want the sequal because they hate the movie. It’s rare for me to find people I know that like the movie. They don’t even have to love it like me. Just like it. My best friend hates it. And one of my other friends just doesn’t like animated movies. Too much into movies like Twilight. :unamused: They don’t want the sequal for those reasons. At least you liked it.
