Cars 2 Reviews

I’m thinking either Rango, Winnie the Pooh, or Kung Fu Panda 2 will take it.

Excellent! Ebert’s review made me more confident, and the RT score has started going up a bit. That’s great news

Oh yeah, I didn’t think of those. Rango will most likely get it, considering how many people liked it.

Yeah, I really think Rango has the best chance, especially with its adult themes.

I hope to see Cars 2 at least get nominated. Are there any other major contestants besides Winnie the Pooh, Rango and Kung Fu Panda 2?

I think that’s pretty much it. I would really love Cars 2 to at least get nominated.

Yes, I’d hate it if Cars 2 broke Pixar’s record of holding an Oscar nomination for every film released. At least sound editing and mixing should get noticed if it’s not up for Animated Picture grabs.

I hope with all my might that Cars 2 is a genuinely good film. Haven’t been expecting much since I didn’t really like the original Cars all that much, but these reviews make me hope that the sequel is at least decent.

If it’s eligible, the award’ll go to Tin Tin. Calling that right now. In fact, I’m not even sure if Winnie the Pooh is eligible due to its running time.

Peter Traver’s review. He’s one of the better reviewers out there so I trust his judgement.

It’s great to see lots of good reviews finally coming in.

It’s currently at 38%. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. I truly believe that if this was done by another animation studio, it probably would be doing better as far as reviews. But after the four films that Pixar released starting with Ratatouille, I’m not suprised. People come to expect certain things from a Pixar film at this point, and their not getting it with Cars 2. To me it’s like with those old movie legends of the past like Marylin Monroe or Cary Grant. They became famous for a certain kind of role, and when they changed it up, people didn’t embrass it as much.

Totally Rad Show review, generally positive (and I trust these guys, so that’s good)

Okay, I have to say something here:

If this was doing 90% right now, none of you would be questioning the judgment of any of these critics. As Pixar fans who are accustomed to quality filmmaking and high critical praise like no other fanbase, I thought we were beyond this sort of excuse-making denial that other fandoms go through when their movies get trashed.

Ebert may have liked it, sure, but he’s just one critic. And I would much rather all film critics form their own opinion rather than “look up to” him. This movie is obviously geared towards a very young and very lowbrow audience, and if you ask me the Tomatometer is reflecting that perfectly. If anything, I think some critics are giving it a pass because it’s Pixar.

I’m completely ok with this being labeled as Pixar’s first misfire. It had to happen at some point, and I’d rather it happen here than one of their more ambitious original films.

Well, at least we haven’t seen any negative reviews yet from Armond White about Cars 2 yet. That got me thinking, since the critics are giving Cars 2 bad reviews and Armond White praises any bad movie, maybe he’ll give Cars 2 a positive rating.

if Armond White praises it you know it sucks BIG TIME

Back up to 39%! Maybe this is the start of a rise?

I wouldn’t expect to much. Every review from now on would have to be positive for it to get to the original Cars score. I hope for at least a high 40’s low 50’s by this point.

Sheesh, the reviews are BRUTAL.

Heck, read them! A lot of people are saying that the film is good, if not Pixar’s usual quality… and then they give it a Rotten.

To me, this sounds more like a case of studio comparison than it genuinely being bad. I’m holding my tongue until I see it for myself.

Plus, there’s a ton of reviews where people just don’t like Mater. And I just don’t care about those. ._.

@tribefan695 while I can see your point, I don’t think that’s true for everybody. I think the Pixar fandom is positive about things, but can be critical in their own right. We just don’t talk about it as much.

Heck, I’ll come out and say it: The Incredibles? Good movie. Best Pixar film like the critics keep saying it is? Uh, no. I don’t think so. Not if you ask me. I just don’t mention it much because I don’t see any gain from bashing a film other people here enjoy.

So it’s good, but not as good as other Pixar fare? Really, people? Just not being up to snuff with other studio entries doesn’t mean you should rate it rotten. It’s better than the crap DreamWorks made in the mid-2000s.

You know, I absolutley agree. Ratatouille to Toy Story 3 are, and perhaps always will be, Pixar’s “renaissance-esqe” streak of ambitious, intelligent, critically acclaimed films. These films have set several benchmarks in animation; that any concept is possible with a stellar story, that a sequel can be good if you stay true to it’s characters, and, perhaps most of all, animated films can appeal to an audience much, much broader than children. Ratatouille, WALL-E and Up would’ve been trashed instantly by any other studio because their concepts are so out of the box. They weren’t supossed to work on paper, and yet they did. Viewers loved them, critics loved them.

With Cars 2, the audience is quite clearly different. John Lasseter, the man himself, is back to direct. And the great thing about John Lasseter is that he is very old school. When the past four films have been directed by Brad Bird, who’s a little zany and very stylised, Andrew Stanton, who knows how to make stories that pull the heartstrings, Pete Docter, who is budding and enthusiastic and traditional, and Lee Unkrich, who can breathe new life into the old, Lasseter’s style all of a sudden looks a bit out of place to the critic. If this was 1999, they’d be lapping it up, but unfortunatley it’s not; Pixar have proven themselves to be versatile and a powerhouse, if anything. This appears on the cover as a step backwards. Which is a crying shame.

Interesting point, and it pains for me to admit it but you’re probably right. A lot of critics are “brought into” a film because of it’s director, studio or source material. It’s an opinion, but the positive score for the last Indiana Jones movie is in no way justified imo. I thought the film was awful, with shoddy dialogue, a cliched storyline and some terrible actor, and yet I have a distinct suspiscion that some critics gave it high scores because it’s a Spielberg film. Everyone has a bad day.

Agreed also. Hoping Brave will make up for any losses for this; the concept looks fresh and fantastic. At the end of the day, although I personally don’t agree with ranking each film and that, Cars is more often than not considered Pixar’s weakest. It’s not a bad film, but it seems very strange to make a sequel on what is considered to be the weakest film. I await bashing from Cars fans…

ROFL! 8D

Call me ignorant but I’m hoping for better than the 50’s
