Look, we all knew that Cars 2 was never going to be a Toy Story or a WALL-E, and it was never intended to be. I feel some of the critics missed the point. Or maybe it just isn’t very good
The problem is that most critics are comparing it to Pixar’s recent films.
I wonder what our old friend Mr. White has to say about this film. LOL
If critics missed the point that it was never intended to be a Toy Story or Wall-E, then wouldn’t the Tomatometer be at 90% right now?
Personally I always thought this looked less appealing than Rio and Kung Fu Panda 2 from their marketing, and those films were aimed just as much at kids as this is. There is a line somewhere that Cars 2 crossed and those two films didn’t that has resulted in it getting worse reviews. I haven’t seen it, but I’d guess from reviews/advertising it was a combination of making a comic relief character who’s funny in small doses the star, the number of bathroom jokes and ethnic stereotypes which I thought were remarkably subdued in those other movies (ironic considering those had animal characters and this one has machines), and the unconvincing moral.
It didn’t just look below Pixar’s standards, it looked below decent kids movie standards. The jokes shown off in the trailer were on the level of Diary of a Wimpy Kid’s humor, and those movies got reviews pretty much on par with this.
We all decide for ourselves how good a movie is, yes, but I don’t think the attacks on critics are warranted considering how kind they’ve been to Pixar’s movies up until now.
I’m holding my breath in anticipation!!
Well, given the reviews, it might actually be positive.
I wish I could hope the score would get better, but it’s still 36%.
I’m intrigued to see how well…or badly…that **** who does the Daily Mail reviews rates this.
I guess when it gets released worldwide, then worldwide critics will also contribute. You never know
Who knows, he might surprise us with that!
If Armond White give this film a positive review I will forgive him for all wrong he has done in the past!
I am going to see the film tonight or this weekend so I will tell you guys if it is good or not.But in the end it will only be up to you to say if you like it or not.
If a seperate topic gets made for our own reviews (or even if it doesnt) I may come up with a more detailed opinion, but I’ve seen it and here’s a concise version:
from my Facebook status:
“I saw Cars 2 and actually LIKED it. Okay? Its just fun with stunning visuals. Lots of action, not much emotion or seriousness (but are those requirements now?). Not as good as the first, but not deserving of the terrible reviews its getting.”
Like people have been saying, Mater IS the star and Lightning (all the Radiator Springs characters, really) takes a bit of a backseat. Its a spy movie, not really like the first, in terms of storyline and theme. There are some logic issues, but what movie doesnt have that? It doesnt take away from the movie for me. Finn McMissile is very cool and like I mentioned, the animation and graphics are awesome. Do I like the first better? yes. But I went into the theater knowing that. And for me at least, I actually didnt mind all the Mater. (But I can see that if you dont like Mater, you wont like the movie much) The movie does show that Mater DOES know a few things and isnt totally stupid.
Cars 2 is at 34% On Rotten Tomatoes and while that does not bother me to much it does worry me I am about to go out to dinner with my family and then we are going to Cars 2 Right after Hope it does not let me down…
Cars 2 is going to look real weird against Pixar’s other scores …100%, 91%, 100%, 95%, 98%, 98%, 76%, 96%, 96%, 98%, 99%…34%…
But you know what? I think everyone likes a film that was panned. I don’t think anyone should feel undermined for liking an unpopular film, and people who do undermine people for their opinions are just dumb. And this could be a real lesson for Pixar, a real turning point; if something is obviously amiss, and by the looks of it it boils down to the stories and the characters, they can learn from that and make sure it doesn’t happen again. They make 11 great films and a dud. So what? Praise the 11 great films and take heed from the dud. Be optomistic
Looking in the “Top Critics” section, the score is 60%, which is okay I suppose. The only reason why critics are bashing this movie is probably because they were expecting a masterpiece like their previous films. I can understand why they’d be somewhat dissapointed but a score lower than 50% is not acceptable. I haven’t even seen any recent Disney movies with scores as low as that. They’re being too harsh.
I don’t even want to look at RT anymore rofl
It’s kind of funny when you look at scores on Rotten Tomatoes. This would be Pixar’s worst film (34%) and when you compare it with the Disney Animated Canon’s worst film, which a lot of people dislike, Chicken Little (36%), Chicken Little is actually slightly higher, if not, it’s still around the same level.
It is kind of sad though, Pixar brings out masterpieces every year, and when I first saw the announcement, I thought “no, no, it’s kind of early, it could change, right?”. But now, or at least for the moment, Pixar’s track record is ruined. Forever… and ever… and ever…
And it’s all thanks to our lovable Lightning McQueen and friends.
Oh man, please don’t make it sound like that. I mean, at least they had a good run of 11 films, right? I’m sure Brave will be better anyway.
Oh it’s not the end of the world now, is it?
Saw it today.
As most of you are probably aware, I didn’t have high hopes for Cars 2 at all. The Tomatometer didn’t help. However, now that I’ve seen the movie, I can fairly say that the reviewers are definitely looking at this movie with the weights of Pixar’s prior success and the mixed reception of the first Cars, and not giving it as much of a fair chance as they should. Had this been released by another studio, I’m sure it would’ve gotten a fresh rating.
Anyway…I enjoyed this movie a lot better than the first one. It was a fun movie that doesn’t take itself too seriously. The action is great and the new characters are pretty fun. Mater didn’t annoy me nearly as much as I expected; he is obnoxious, but that’s the point for the bulk of the story. The environments are stunning, of course. There’s a lot more action and intrigue than the first movie, even though the emotional core doesn’t run as strong.
I did have a few problems though.
The pacing of the movie overall felt a bit off. The time between the Tokyo and Italy races with the [spoil]sidetracking to France[/spoil] just felt a bit too long and took me out of it a bit. By the end I just felt a bit exhausted by the run time.
The entire thing with [spoil]Axelrod being the villain[/spoil] was an interesting idea, but ultimately a little strange. [spoil]The reveal was a lot less satisfying because the explanation was a bit too confusing, and I still don’t really get why they even bothered to hold the WGP if Allinol didn’t even exist? Or did it? I’m still not really sure, lol.[/spoil]
And the biggest problem, the message of the movie felt very off to me. [spoil]There’s nothing wrong with a “be yourself” message, but that shouldn’t be an excuse to act obnoxious and just say “TOO BAD!” to anyone who’s alienated by you. Sometimes it is important to act differently in front of people, be it elders, teachers, etc. I just kind of got a bad vibe from that, and made me feel like Mater learned absolutely nothing.[/spoil]
Also…the [spoil]dream sequence[/spoil] was just weird. I get that it was there to keep the previously mentioned theme of the movie alive at that point, but still…a little pointless to me.
Overall, I have to say that Cars 2 should at least be given a chance by people. You might hate it, but I came in with low expectations and found it enjoyable. Plus, Hawaiian Vacation and the Brave teaser are must-sees.
By the way…did anyone notice the [spoil]Up set in the scene with Axelrod in the jungle? It’s the set from the scene where Carl tries to get rid of Kevin and Dug.[/spoil]
