Well, it sounds like you enjoyed yourself. If the true fans liked it, then I guess we shouldn’t listen to what the critics say until we actually give the film a chance.
Here’s my review of it. Check it out please!
youtube.com/watch?v=bw_4ibv0Otw
It’s pretty detailed, but major spoilers don’t happen until I make a clear verbal working.
Good review Bryko, although I bypassed the spoilers !
I’m glad to see people liked it actually. I think the guys on here are more important than critics tbh.
It was a really good review, very complex and well-written. Still though, I do think you were a bit harsh on John Lasseter and the movie in general, but again, that’s your opinion.
I find it interesting that, whilst the RT score may be sinking, the IMBD score is actually 6.7 and the Metascore is at 58%. These aren’t amazing scores but they’re certaintly not bad. I think the public like this more than the critics
I find it largely reassuring that you enjoyed it, Bryko. Considering we have pretty similar taste in Pixar’s movies. Ok. I’ll have to carefully bribe my parents about it, we’ve got a lot of work to do so it may be hard to find the time, but we’ll definitely see it.
Alrighty then, time for a noob’s view of Cars 2:
I saw the film today with my pre-teen daughter. I actually came online and found this site after coming home from the theater and searching for the reactions of other hard-core Pixar fans. I did this for two reasons - first, because I’d seen the many negative professional reviews and thought maybe the fans would have other valuable perspectives on the quality of Cars 2. Second, and I hate to even say this, but I felt guilty about not liking the movie myself, and I guess I wanted to determine whether I was the only fan that felt a bit let down. I am both glad and sorry to see that I’m not alone.
I am not one of those people that dislikes the whole Cars franchise, as I truly enjoyed the first one. I know the original Cars was not a big favorite, even with many fans, but I genuinely loved it and so does my family. Which is why the sequel is such a disappointment - there were so many endearing and entertaining characters in the first Cars, and to see them basically reduced to inconsequential bit players (even Lightning, which really shocked me) was not cool. To see the themes from Cars also being tossed aside was a major misstep, IMO, and it left me shaking my head. Cars 2, to be honest, is not much more than race/chase, race/chase, with a few explosions here and there to keep you from dozing off. It had no development in terms of character, story or theme, it was just action and color and noise, and not much else.
If I had to pinpoint what was missing the most in Cars 2, I’d have to say it was missing the famed Pixar whimsy. Seriously, this is one of the most whimsy-less movies I’ve ever seen, and that was what truly hurt to watch. I know some people have a problem with the idea of cars being the protagonists of a film, and I’ve read the arguments that the Cars world makes no sense. I don’t need it to make sense, it’s supposed to be the product of imagination, and it’s supposed to allow you to suspend your realistic expectations and explore your own imagination for a couple of hours. The whimsical heart of every other Pixar film prior to this one truly shows itself during those moments where you can let go of the real world around you and revel in the visual, mental and emotional playground that Pixar provides for you in its films. But this one? Man, there was not a single moment - and I mean not one! - where I felt the urge to lose myself in the imaginary world and events of Cars 2. Not one moment where I felt that pure, exuberant, aren’t-we-having-a-ball childhood soul that unites the Pixar artists with those of us in the audience. There’s no time for whimsy, it’s non-stop ACTIONACTIONACTION and that’s it!
True story: there was a trailer for the upcoming Disney reboot of Winnie-the-Pooh that ran before Cars 2, and I was struck by how much it seems to go back to the old-school style of the original Disney Pooh stories. It warmed my heart a bit to see them using the same visuals (the drawing style, the old “characters flying through the text” thing, the storybook cover closing at the end of the tale). There was more honest-to-goodness whimsy and warmth in that couple of minutes than there would end up being in the whole of Cars 2.
I suppose some will assume that this film was designed to entertain/sell merchandise to the kids in the viewing audience. I expect many children will enjoy it, but this is not a positive thing as far as I’m concerned. Much as the Disney theme parks have been under pressure recently to add more thrills and action to their rides, in order to placate today’s stimulant-addicted kids and compete with other parks that focus more on thrills than mood or character, the Pixar crew seems to feel the need to provide non-stop frantic action in this movie. It is just not what I expected from this particular group, and I really did feel a bit sorry to see the way it was presented. Not to mention the fact that my own daughter, who loved, loved, LOVED the first Cars, was thoroughly unhappy with Cars 2. When I asked her for her rating of the movie on a scale of 1 to 5 stars, she said, “Zero-and-a-half stars, maybe.” Not a ringing endorsement, but then again it might be more appealing to boys than to girls.
Cars 2 had some good moments, and I really did enjoy Michael Caine’s performance, as well as that of John Turturro. The visuals were, as usual, breathtaking, and the detail and skill with which they were created deserve full marks. I simply cannot say that there was anything else about this movie that engaged me mentally or emotionally, and it felt like a total slap in the face to come out of it with so little good feeling, when every other Pixar film I’ve seen has had me grinning like a maniac and spewing all sorts of praise to anyone and everyone for days after I’ve seen it. I wish I could say that John Lasseter did a great job with this, that his instincts were right on the money and that his enthusiasm for and faith in this sequel were justified. But I can’t, and I hope he’s not turning a deaf ear to those of us in the Pixar fan community who want to see something much, much better next time. They are capable of so much more, and after I waited so long and with so much hope for the potential awesomeness of a sequel to Cars, this really is too bad.
I’d say go see it if you’re really a dyed-in-the-wool Pixar fan, because you may feel completely differently than I do about it. But I will not say I recommend it, even as easy summer entertainment, because I don’t even think it was that. Sorry to be so negative in my first post here, but I swear I have so many positive things to say about Pixar and I’m sure in time I’ll be able to do that on this forum! Just for today though, this is as good as it gets, unfortunately.
Thanks.
To be honest I feel bad for John. He seemed absolutely exhausted.
I don’t know “what happened” with Cars 2. It all just seems very strange.
I wasn’t trying to cut him down, merely point out that he (and Pixar) knows better.
Just got back, everyone!
I’ll keep it short since I’m doing a full review for Peach, but I’ll say this: Remember how I said it looked ridiculous, but fun?
I love being right.
Entertainment should be entertaining. And while I will agree that Cars 2 is Pixar’s weakest effort, that is NOT to say that it is a bad movie AT ALL. I enjoyed it wholeheartedly.
So let go of your DEEP and POIGNANT expectations and just HAVE FUN WITH IT!
So I got back from the Movies and this is how I see it this Cars made the first one look like gold I enjoyed the film but some of the stuff in it was pointless and made the movie drag on and for some reason it just did not feel like I was watching a Pixar movie except for the visuals they were The only thing that felt pixar to me.The movie was worth 1 watch but if I had to see it again I most likely would not.I might buy the Blu-Ray just because I own every pixar movie so far and for the fact that the Toy Story toon was amazing and I would love to re watch it.So all in all give the movie a go see how you feel right now I am just neutral about it Lets hope pixar restores glory when Brave comes out…
I just wonder how John is feeling with all of the negative feed back… Anyone else kinda angry John Ratzenberger only got 1 line in the whole movie.
The movie was so amazing! I teared up with the whole [spoil]dream sequence[/spoil], but I agree, it was pretty darn weird and if it was any longer than it was, it would have been just plain creepy.
Short and sweet because my eyes hurt from the 3D and I’m tired:
Anyone who doesn’t give the movie a chance, is missing out.
Glad you liked it and I agree give the movie a chance like I said before and see how you like it.
Rotten Tomatoes is not at 33%. I hope John isn’t listening to them.
Here’s my little review of Cars 2 I posted on RT (no spoilers):
This movie wasn’t bad at all. In fact, the reviews that are negative are so unfair. They’re basing it on how good of a Pixar movie it was instead of basing it on how good the movie itself was. This isn’t Rotten Pixar, people. This is Rotten Tomatoes.
If it was Rotten Pixar, sure, it should be rotten. Let the record show that I am totally in love with the first and second Cars, however I still don’t think it’s Pixar’s strongest. Cars was in fact the weakest, but Cars 2 wasn’t even close to being weak. A total improvement all around. Go see it. If you don’t even give it a chance, you’re missing out.
It seems that even though old men and women in suits dislike the movie, the general public adores it. I’m not talking about the ones who rate here on RT, I’m talking about all of the tweets when searching #Cars2 on Twitter, all over FB, and other blogging or social networking sites. They even think the critics have something wrong with them mentally if they really thought it was this bad. But you know what, don’t take my word for it, go look at them for yourself. Go see it yourself.
Really though, go see it. It’s worth it. Don’t expect it to be one of the sappy Pixar films, expect it to be fun. You will have a great time.
Actually its at 33 for all critics and 44 for top critics and I think it is just wrong I mean its not right Cars 2 is going to be the lowest rated CGI movie of all time and It does not deserve it…It was not that bad It was way better then Shark Tale which is the lowest CGI movie on rottentomatoes right now god this sucks lowest rated CGI film of all time! And what hurts is I feel like disney pushed them into this milking the cash cow I do not know I feel bad for Pixar right now…And what really stings me is every site I see is like this is a sad day for Pixar the end of an era.Wish I would wake of from this dream and Cars 2 was loved by everyone.
I haven’t seen Cars 2 yet and I know it’s better then Shark Tale.
Let it be the worst reviewed. After seeing the reaction from everyone on Twitter and FB who saw it thinking the critics of RT are “mentally insane” and “seemed like they weren’t watching the same movie”, I’m really happy. I’m overjoyed!
I know but it just stings I mean it does not deserve to be the worst rated cgi movie on the site…It deserves a 60 or 70 if you ask me
I have seen Twitter negative reviews but more positive on Goggle.
I honestly do not know what to say I have not felt depressed for a long time…And now I do Just thinking of the big blow the guys at Pixar just took reading those reviews.
