how do you know? u shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. i did that with toy story 3, when i first heard about them doing it. And as it turned out, i loved it. Besides its Pixar. Point being don’t say “I DON’T WANT TO SEE IT” when you know nothing of the film. For heavens sake, it comes out in 2 years. You can have your opinion obviously, but ur not being fair! give it a chance.
SERIOUSLY DUDE no offence like the other guy said but you must be kidding when you say “It’s hard to create a believable story about things that are not alive without making it silly.” Look at Toy Story Which is Pixar’s most popular movie…And Cars which is right after Toy Story in popularity…
Exactly! Otherwise, you can pretty much rule out The Wizard of Oz, Star Wars, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland, or any other film/story with “impossible” scenarios and characters. Imagination is the key to anything like that. Only thing is, does the filmmaker manage to present these unlikely or impossible scenarios in a way that makes you interested in them and entertains you, and can they make you feel something for those characters that couldn’t possibly exist in the real world? If the answer is yes to both of those questions, then you have yourself a good film, regardless of how nutty the premise might seem on paper.
Just read through all 23 pages of everyone’s initial hopes prior to the film’s release and their following disappointment/mild enthusiasm about the film once it came out, and wanted to give my 2 cents before it got too late.
I really wanted this film to be good. I never really hated Cars 1 but I do think it was their weakest film to date. So when I heard they were making a sequel I actually found myself really getting excited- here’s a second chance to prove these characters and universe can be entertaining. But, even as a Cars enthusiast, I can’t in my right mind actually recommend this film to anyone let alone the most die hard of Cars fans, I’m sorry. I didn’t mind that it was starring Mater (wasn’t really surprised after seeing so many Cars Toons), nor that it was comedy based (Monsters Inc was definitely one), nor that the film’s villain felt slightly rehashed (IMO so was Muntz). But as a general PIXAR fan and Cars enthusiast, the complete lack of any emotional connection I had to the plot, comedy or characters- that’s where I draw the line.
John Lasseter always said “For every laughter, there’s a tear”. That doesn’t mean all of their films have to be a tear jerking sob story, but it does symbolize that significant lasting emotional experience which is a staple of any of their movies. It’s what makes PIXAR so good, the reason why they work 4 years on each one trying to perfect it as good as possible. And I’m sorry to sound like so many Rotten Tomatoes reviewers, but Cars 2 was a big disappointment for me in this regard. While the first film had at least had the song “Our Town” which was one of the highlights of the film, Cars 2 had none. While the storyline wasn’t terrible by itself, without any present emotional value to the plot or characters, it’s overall weakness was exemplified. Lasseter also stated “No animation in the world could possibly save a bad storyline,” and I think it’s apparent in this film. Where was the Brain Trust on this one? I know it sounds like I trashed too harshly on the film but just because it’s a Cars film, I’m not going to give it any handicaps. To do that would be for me to admit they couldn’t have made a better movie, and I know they could have.

Now that my disappointment is out of the way, I can say what I did like about the film. I enjoyed the action for the most part, Mater and Lightning were mildly amusing, and I did want more Finn and Holley (a short film starring them IMO would’ve been much more interesting), and as always I enjoyed the animation and music. The shout out to “GusTows” was hilarious and I loved every scene Francesco Bernoulli was in.
Those who remember me (from when I joined this site like… 4 years ago) will know that I’m a HUGE fan of the original Cars. I’ve calmed down about it since then, so I wasn’t incredibly hyped for Cars 2 - especially since I thought it looked a liiiittle dodgy… so I didn’t do much, ah, fangirling.
Well, I saw Cars 2 yesterday and my first reaction is that it was… just alright. Decent. Not Pixar’s greatest effect but not a bad film either. There was something about mixing a serious, grim spy-themed plot with Pixar’s originally lighthearted Cars world, that seemed a little awkward for me - though judging from the amazingly mixed reviews, I think that depends on your taste, and the same can be said for the original. Some people like talking cars, others don’t. I thought that some parts in Cars 2 were far too serious, it might as well have been a live-action spy movie. But the movie certainly did have some good moments and definite laughs.
I think I would like to give Cars 2 a second viewing before giving a review. I have a bad memory for movies that I’ve only seen once.
But yes, I say go and see it, enjoy yourself, don’t expect a complete emotional heartfelt masterpiece (haha I almost put Materpiece!), and just give it a chance.
^^ I remember you from four years ago. You were a big fan of the DRH right? Do you remember me, I had a really long name like luigiandguidofan or something ; I haven’t been here in a while. But i’m still a Cars fan after all this time.
Glad you liked the movie, I thought it was good even though it had it’s flaws. I loved the new characters and it was a nice change to have a more fast paced Cars movie.
I really, really, wish I could say I LOVED this movie. Like I have with every other Pixar film. But I thought it was decent and alright. I was a bit disapointed, because I thought’d be better.
But I loved the stunning animation, and Francesco was great. I’m going to see the movie a second time, I hope I’ll enjoy it again that time.
Nyaki56, I remember you, too! And yes, I’m still nutty about the DRH, hehe. Glad to know that you’re still a Cars fan. And yeah, weirdly enough I was more for the jerk characters Francesco, Grem and Acer rather than the protagonists Finn and Holley.
Hi Pixarfan91, nothin’ much! Think I’ll be drawing some Cars art again after seeing the sequel.
^^ Nice to here from you again, it’s been a while. My favorite new character was Finn but I thought that Grem and Acer made great villains. In fact I practically liked the whole new cast of Cars 2. I still love Guido and Luigi of course, they were great in the movie. Can’t wait to see your new cars fanart, you are a really good artist!
YouAreAToy!!! DRH stands for Delinquent Road Hazards. They were the four cars who tried to push Mack off the road towards the beginning of the first cars movie.
