Confusing a layman for an important person is quite a common plot device in the spy genre.
Probably it’s greatest use was in Hitchcock’s North by Northwest, but there are so many great instances.

Yes! I like that.
Yeah, you would think that an experienced and highly trained spy would know the difference between another secret agent and an innocent, not-so-bright tow truck.
Shoulden’t Finn asked him questions first?

I know, I was really wondering how a high-ranked agent like Finn could be so foolish [/size]
They just needed that for the story to work^^.
Anyone else could walk in their and he would think their a spy. Even Chick may look like one to him.
I think Finn McMissile was so used to dealing with top-notch spies/market dealers, that he thought Mater was playing a role of “idiot tow truck” (his line to Mater right before he goes into the building to infiltrate the secret meeting) to hide his cover. It wasn’t until they were tied up inside Big Bentley (the clock) that Finn finally realized Mater was serious about not being a spy.
That is what happened^, but he is supposed to be very well trained.
Well, this film is comedic, so I accept something like that.
I liked the idea, it just wasn’t presented well at all.
I guess that’s true.
Wasn’t Mater one of the inspirations Lasseter had for doing the sequel?
I think that’s the reason why Cars 2 isn’t good, Mater. Mater is not a stronger character a lot of people don’t like him and kids rather Lightning McQueen. I don’t understand why the story is focused on Mater when Lightning is the main character and who gives a lot of merchandising. I would rather more of McQueen, maybe less Holley and Finn and more Francesco or more of radiator springs gang. When you watch a sequel you want to see the characters from the original not all focused in new characters.
A lot of members here did sau think think theres too much Mater.
Yes, too much Mater (though I’ve recently opened up to him)
But there can never be enough Finn.
I agree^.
I always cringe at the “Pistacio Icecream” scene.
I agree, Destiny. Lightning is more popular with kids (I mean, he’s a racecar. ) and he’s a much better main character for many reasons.
Boom. Right there. The thing with Cars 2 is that it’s a movie that can stand completely on it’s own. There’s barely any correlation with the first movie’s story and that’s not the major point of a sequel.
Me too. It’s just so “out there” and…ugh, if I was Lightning… I mean, everyone was staring like and even the other racers had angry looks on their face. I would not want to be associated with Mater after that.
I agree with you too. The story telling runs from one side to other it’s like everything have to rush without stop. in a blink of an eye you’re in italy and then you’re in London. Also the story is a little complicated and there isn’t connection with the first cars. I saw a lot of deleted scenes from Cars 2 on the bluray and I think if they had used those scenes, perhaps the movie could be better.
Mater didn’t really bother me that much in Cars 2, but then again, I love Mater (he and Lightning McQueen are by far my favorite Cars characters with Doc Hudson close behind; wish he were in the second movie). But yeah, it was pretty dumb of him to mistake wasabi for pistachio ice cream.
I do really like Mater, and he and Finn McMissile are my favourite Cars characters, but the way he was presented in Cars 2 was embarrassing rather than endearing.
