Central Cars 2 Discussion

Not at all, in fact I for one agree with you 100%. While admittedly the Character Reveal thing was interesting at first for Toy Story 3 (although in the long run it served very very little to actual plot or characterization of the film), by the second time around it’s really tiresome and almost tripe.

Not sure how many Anime fans are out there, but a really popular series out there is called Haruhi Suzumiya which is about a girl who obliviously has supernatural reality warping powers and unknown to her hangs out with a Time Travel, Esper and Alien/ Humanoid Robot. Well anyway, they had this one story arc called Endless Eight which was where the characters were stuck in a Time Loop had to repeat the exact same episode (albeit with different animation) exactly the same. And it went on for three frickin’ months (8 episode story arc)! Now Haruhi is a very very popular series and very very rarely ever makes new episodes, so admittedly fans were very disappointed about this, and found it to be a kind of cop out by the studio, as opposed to creating new episodes of the show rather than repeating the same one eight times.

My point is, is that no matter how good PIXAR does by promoting their new characters nothing can beat more views at the film’s storyline ie more new clips.

Wow, that sounds very lazy of the creators of Haruhi, Pixar Builder.

The path Pixar is going down also concerns me. We’ve had two sequels in a row, with a third due the year after next. Plus, for the first time ever, we will have a pre-theatrical short that is not an original, but a continuation of an existing property.

And then we’ve got Pixar Canada, which is an ancillary branch to produce TV shows and short films.

The only Pixar film I am truly looking forward to is Brave. I still am excited for Cars 2 to an extent (since it is the sequel to the movie that started my love affair with the studio) but I highly doubt it will be something groundbreaking or benchmark-pushing. I could be wrong, we’ll have to see. But Brave looks so much more matured and grown-up, almost European arthouse, while this year, we have a spy film which Lasseter claims is not a parody, but of which the trailer seems to imply to the contrary (ooh… rhyming couplets).

I mean, god, I thought Pixar was over toilet jokes, but here we have Mater squealing at a bidet spraying up his tushie and one of the henchmen falling into a septic tank truck. And of course, it’s not like Pixar hasn’t done this before (“lincoln logs”, Bonnie drinking too much tea, Woody nearly falling into the toilet bowl, Russell answering the call of nature, etc.).

And people criticise on Dreamworks for their scatological humour and multiple sequels, or Blue Sky for having a trilogy franchise, or Animal Logic having astounding visuals but no story. I’m not saying we should suddenly give up on Pixar, because they have had a literal eleven-strike-winning-streak, but I really dislike hypocrisy and double-standards. And I think we should give criticism when it’s due.

Anyway, I just want to assure everyone that I’m not hatin’ on Pixar. Giving constructive criticism actually shows concern for the studio. And I will still support Cars 2 and hopefully it’ll win my heart and prove my doubts wrong.

It’s actually muchas gracias, but good one!

Don’t know. The fact I love about the character reveal is that I can still get excited every few days without being spoiled. Clips or other storyline reveals give away too much. I still think this is the best thing they can do, sorry.

I suggest that they best thing they can do is to not excite us every few days, and hold their cards to let us discover the characters in the movie. By posting their synopses out there, it invites fans to read about the character’s back history instead of speculating or figuring it out for themselves. As I’ve said, Rango similarly had a huge cast, but it had the poise and dignity of leaving it for uber-fans to discover on the main site instead of sending media releases to the movie sites.

If we look at other studios, they have the courtesy and self-restraint to plug on their own official websites and maybe start ‘spamming’ the TV spots a few weeks closer to the release date. I’m looking at Kung Fu Panda 2’s Twitter and official site, and they are certainly driving their own little campaign, but it not as prominent or ‘ostentatious’ as Pixar’s constant media releases to the movie sites. And as I’ve said, Rango, Rio, even Mars Need Moms didn’t have this ‘bumping strategy’, even though they probably had a multitude of background characters as well.

BUT I do agree with you that, yes, it’s a much better strategy than posting whole clips or spoiler-ridden trailers and TV spots. I’m just saying they should cool it with the fifty-odd wallpapers and character bios, when realistically, each character besides the main ones is probably gonna get one-two lines of dialogue and maybe a ten-second cameo before disappearing for the rest of the movie. Fans might enjoy this, but again, on my personal level, I find it trite and annoying.

TDIT I agree with you 90% percent. What I really lothe is the fact that it’s not so much not having RS but how this seems to be all about Mater…I mean don’t you find it a little odd that there’s this Mater-thon going on,and Mater being the main character when it’s Lightning’s race to begin with? It’s like Pixar is doing the complete oppsite of what they need to do to make “improvements” from the original Cars…And I know the reason why Sally’s not in it because her merchindise didn’t sell as much as Mater’s blah, blah, blah…Oh and one more thing I REALLY,REALLY lothe Holley Shiftwell…

Rant over LOL

Then at least give us some good old fashioned Cars Toons or some brief interstitials like WALL•E’S Trinkets or the Upisodes. Those were funny in their own right and even though they didnt show a thing about the film’s plot, it still hyped us up for it because it showed who the characters were and how they acted. Those little stories were perfect and were enjoyable in their own righted and at least the characters were actually doing something, not just sitting on a revolving platform.

Personally as much as I do want to see Sally more in the film, I wouldn’t go that far, partially since I really like Holly’s character and I’m admittedly a big Emily Mortimer fan. Im still hoping Sally reappears later in the film as a sort of Deus Ex Machina via Gingy and Pinocchio in Shrek 2.

Although you are right about the annoyingness of Cars 2 being Mater The Movie and not Lightning’s

They don’t have to do anything for us to admire the design. That’s the only point of the character reveals.

And yes, Cars Toons and Upisodes would be great, but they’re expensive to produce. Here they only give us a peek of the character template, which already exists. It’s an economic way of doing it.

Anyway, they’re not obligatory. You guys can simply ignore them, as I’ve ignored a lot of films’ campaigns.

True, but you seem to be forgetting they have an entire animation division in Canada that is specifically designed for shorts and PIXAR cartoons. I bet that by allocating their money and resources from holding off on 3 new Cars characters to releasing a new short instead, fans would not only like the short much more, they’d like the character more too (just like how people liked Chuckles because he came as a complete surprise).

Check out this new Cars 2 Poster!

See? Now that’s what I’m talking about!

That…poster…is…EPIC!

I can spot the Radiator Springs gang (Sally, Red, Sheriff, Lizzie, Ramone, Flo) on the Thames!! They ARE coming to watch Lightning race after all!

That’s too awesome for words.

I don’t think that means anything definite. All the characters appeared on Radiator Springs in the first Cars posters, and most never went there.

Where are they? I still can’t see them…

They’re by the London Bridge, next to a line of cars on the red carpet.

Hey I just spotted Mack too, on the Bridge!

this new poster is more than impressive, however there is no sign of Chick Hicks

hahha

Haha.

Hate the dub.

Why would you say that, SoA? What did Mater say (could you translate)?

Also, for the new poster…

GAAAHH!!! My wish came true!

Now that’s how you supposed to drive, Pixar! From now on… that’s how you drive! :sunglasses:

This is going straight to my desktop wallpaper.

That would make sense if they were present at the race’s end.
