The Must-Read TDIT Blog Post - ‘5 Things I Expect from Cars 2’

Or you can just click the links in my sig!

Yes, I apologize SOA, that must be so difficult. Well, at least you’ll be able to hear positive reviews from us members!

Tdit: Cool! I’m totally reading that last one!

Dang, its down to 54%. That’s…quite low. The movie’s not out yet, so there are only 21 reviewers, but…wow. Well, it had to end eventually. Even Pixar couldn’t avoid ever making a less-than-stellar movie; its just impossible. Even Walt Disney made some stinkers.

Yes, it’s perfectly natural. I just wasn’t prepared for it.

But I was expecting it to be lower than the original. I told so to the very optimist ones who thought the movie would end up at 80 or 90.

You know what I realized? When the first movie came out, the critics were complaining that Cars was too slow paced and boring. Now, they are saying Cars 2 is too crazy and they miss the emotional depth of Cars. Make up your dang minds!

There’s still a chance that it could reach 60, but…

At this point, I’m doubting it. Some of the reviews are valid. Some of them aren’t, but we cannot deny them all. It’s sad, really. I really do hope that Cars 2 can still pull up its score a bit, but we do need to be honest. Pixar’s winning streak wont necessarily end here, but it’s cutting it close. We’ll have to see how it all pans out.

I do have to agree. I don’t mind people not liking the film, as I’ve been putting up with people pouring their hatred for Cars for the past month now, however, I do feel like the bar has been raised so much by Pixar by their last four films. All were bold and did something normal animated films wouldn’t really delve into or accomplish. Which is why I think critics are expecting that. I think it’s fine for a film company to ‘slum it’, so to speak, and have fun making a movie every now and then without the intention of having the audience in tears by the end. I think it’s wrong for critics to expect to have an emotional experience in every Pixar movie, especially with the way the movie has been advertised.

Even if it does end up rotten, I guess that just helps the film for fans as they’ll get that much more out of it when they come out of the theater. Hopefully, despite if Cars 2 is considered rotten or even barely good, I’ll be able to say Pixar has delivered another fun film.

I don’t know, I’m going on a bit of a tangent.

EDIT: This quote from slashfilm sumes it up pretty well, “If Cars 2 was a live-action film with humans, it might be another studio’s best film of the year. But since it’s Pixar, it places near the bottom of their impressive list.”

Two more reviews have been added to Rotten Tomatoes, and they’re both Fresh! So, this is has brought the rating up to 55%. Seriously guys, I wouldn’t pay much attention to Rotten Tomatoes until the movie has been out for more than a week - it’ll just keep changing!

Still, I’m excited to see what the final rating is. I’m hoping it’ll be around the same as the first’s (if not even higher!) but I’d be happy with mid-to-high 60s. As long as it doesn’t stay rotten, I’ll be happy!

Ugh, this makes me so sad. I can’t believe it’s 13 fresh against 10 rotten. How can this be happening…

I just don’t want to see it be rotten! Given that, I’m pretty sure it’ll go way up. Pixar movies get around 250 reviews by the end. We have, what, 23 right now? That’s NOTHING. A movie can have 40ish rotten reviews and still have a score in the 80s. I’m not worried at all.

What I think, is that people who hated it are trying to get the word out first since it’s such a shocker for them.

A lot of the reviews are valid. At the end of the day, a lot of critics didn’t like Cars, and clearly a lot of critics don’t like the sequel. But that’s okay. Reviews are only part of a film’s sucess. Yes, it’s nice to get glowing reviews, but Pixar are in a position, financially and reputationaly, to have a negatively reviewed film.
I do feel, however, that Pixar had a lot to prove. They have, after all, set an extremely high bar for themselves, and making a sequel to their lowest critically reviewed film was a risk that they were willing to take. And I respect that, and even if all the reviews aren’t glowing, I still cannot wait to see it

What saddens me the most is that I saw something like this coming when they announced a sequel to Cars. Like you said, it was something too risky.

I suppose we also should support them in part, as that was a bold move.

Anyway, as you also said, they’re in a position where a film without glowing reviews can’t do much harm… I hope.

90% of this board more than likely would have preferred a sequel to TI, of course, but thats a different story…
If anything, John Lasseter’s passion is amazing. I hope that if the reviews aren’t too great, it doesn’t get him down too much…

I hope the bad reviews make them improve.

After all, that’s what happened after Cars. Best 4 films ever!

I know right! Perhaps Brave, Monsters, University, and the two mystery projects will be even better than the 4 film streak of Ratatouille, WALL-E, Up and TS3:slight_smile:

Don’t give up on the movie yet! Not saying it will be a failure, but still:

“It is good to have a failure while you are young because it teaches you so much. For one thing it makes you aware that such a thing can happen to anybody, and once you’ve lived through the worst, you’re never quite as vulnerable afterwards.” - Walt Disney

Exactly!

I want to hear Michael Caine’s voice saying his Batman Begins quote: “Why do we fall sir? So we might learn to pick ourselves up”

Bravo!

I’m still not going to dismiss the movie as a failure or a success until I see it. But right now, the best thing to do is deliberately lower my expectations.

That’s what I did. Then I saw the 5 minutes clip and they raised again.

That’s why I’m avoiding even looking at the film. I automatically want to hype it.
