I thought it was great how they revealed it in the first Monsters Inc. So I hope that they have another villain as the main one but that we see a reason behind Randall’s actions.
I hope Randall gets a good backstory. Something that shows why he’s so competitive. I’m just intrigued as to how they’ll do it
I’ll like to see that too.
Hmm…wouldn’t compare Randall and Vader in terms of muscle work (though tradegy, maybe). I mean Randall’s smarter than Sullivan and Waozwski, and he’s a fairly good brawler (we don’t see him at his best with that)…though Waternoose has some strength himself despite his age. Randall’s not Mr. Buff and stupid ^0^ Not to say Vader IS stupid, no he’s smart, but he’s also strong in da force
Waternoose’s reveal was pretty good. Especially when he was behind the two and his words change from sympathy to his true colors.
I would think Randall’s competitiveness is just from his personality.
Though personally I believe he wasn’t very well…endowed in terms of life. Probably estranged from (or has no) his parents, working his way up the later of life and struggling through, and always proving out that he’s the better (in what counts) mostly to deny others from saying he’d never make it (or prove them wrong)
Sullivan, on the other hand, I would think came from a some-what groomed origin. His father maybe already in the scare industry and having a name to live up to, though Sullivan has his doubts. He’s got the potential and funds thanks to his parents.
Wazowski? Well…to be honest…unsure how he would get into a college. I would think whatever his origins and what not it conflicts with both Sullivan and Randall.
All coming from different places for better or worse.
Comparisons aren’t quite literal. Just in archetypal terms.
Both Randall and Vader serve to similar purposes in their respective scripts (in the respect of character archetypes, thought obviously Vader is much more important to the overall story). Which means they’re something like the bigger henchmen in the main antagonist’s plot.
Something like [spoil]Dr. Z and Miles Axelrod[/spoil] in Cars 2 or Auto and BNL in WALL·E
Yes yes, I understand. Still hm hm…the literal would be funny.
Hmm…wonder if there is a term for the sorta ‘head lacky’ as it were. “Right Hand” may be it…but Vader was willingly serving Palpatine (though if you take Starkiller into account, he had his own agenda to usurpt Palpatine) whereas Randall was stuck. But yeah I do see what you mean.
Actually there IS a deeper comparison here. Vader had a past, a good one, then he was turned and twisted. But to Palpatine, he was simply a tool…and if I recall he aimed to replace him with Luke, if he was able to turn him to the darkside.
shrugs Just saying, Waternoose is the type that, once he was done with Randall, he would ‘replace’ him just as fatality.
Yes the servers hmm…
(Outside heh…remember somebody actually showed a shirt of Sullivan and Wazowski as Chewbacca and Han Solo respectively in a parody…hmm…M.I. Star Wars…heh…see Randall as Han myself…)
Here is the shirt you mentioned I’ve seen it before.
I agree.
That’s excellent, YouAreAToy!!!
What an awesome design!
That’s awesome.
Wow! That looks great! What’s that thing supposed to be under Mike’s outfit?
His blaster.
It’s generally quite interesting that the main ‘henchman’ is usually the anatagonist me mostly see in terms of screen time in some media.
I guess because usually the ‘big bad’ the ‘top dog’ in the scheme only gets his or her hands dirty when they HAVE to. I mean they have people to do those things after all.
It’s sort of I guess on the idea that at times the ‘top dog’ is ‘the man’ as they said in the 60s, the people in privlidged positions, with power to abuse and which can also corrupt them in some ways. And well Waternoose has been in a position of some power his whole life- since the company belonged to his family before him. Even as a scarer himself he wouldn’t be considered ‘normal’ no matter how nice he could have been to other scarers at the time what with his father (and grandfather before him). Waternoose was likely talented at what he did too- wouldn’t surprise me if HE was once a top scarer. Granted what makes Waternoose more terrifying is despite his appearance- he acts oh so very human. Someone like that could be your boss. But still, it does seem to have the standard practice of having the main henchman set up as the antagonist we mainly see as with many stories of fantasy and sci-fi do. Usually to add mystery and build up the ‘big bad’.
However Waternoose takes it to quite a level.
Waternoose gets Randall (and Fungus to a lesser degree) to do all the dirty work- to such a degree that Roz and the CDA had no idea as to his involvement in the scheme at all until Sulley and Mike get involved. And in the story we perhaps don’t immediately think at first there’s someone above Randall either though we at first viewing wouldn’t have been studying Randall for months. It’s kind of strange though and kind of a mistake- after all while they do say hindsight is 20 20, neither Fungus nor Randall even pulling ANY extra cash together could have probably afforded the materials themselves on a scarer and assistant salary. Unless they thought they both stole money and parts as a working theory? Or perhaps thought it was possible there was someone higher up involved… just not necessarily Waternoose and they wanted Randall to ‘lead’ them to whoever it was accidentally. Hence why they didn’t jump him as soon as they heard of the idea of bringing a human delibrately in. There was potentially some bigger fish to fry even if they weren’t sure who it was. They knew if Randall ‘disappeared’ there was the possibility someone else would take over on behalf of… whoever was running the show. Randall was just someone they were 100% sure of in terms of involvement.
Both forms of antagonist can be particuarly interesting in terms of how they interact. Vader also wanted power, and it could definitly be argued Randall wanted that (though mostly praise and recognition I suppose, and well Sulley he didn’t like to be working underneath him).
Unless the ‘big bad’ in terms of antagonists is just starting up, it’s pretty common there is someone to fight (most) of their battles and do (most of) the work for them. Certainly there are exceptions however.
That is such a great shirt.
I wonder what type of character Dave Foley is going to play.
I wonder what type of character Dave Foley is going to play.
Me too.
Let me try something here…track record hmmm…
Dave Foley? Who knows…this guy was Flick and also Cars/TY2 as a cameo…older now…thinks
My guess? Well if his role is big…he might be a friend for Sullivan. Maybe uhh…I dunno. Picturing Class Clown for some reason. I dunno. I’m going off his voice and recent roles to project an image of what to expect. He just seems to be a student to me…oh no wait…he COULD be a professor…those roles ARE open afterall. Heck, maybe all these people ARE professors…I mean you’ve GOT to have them afterall…but lets continue…
Julia Sweeney…hmm…professor. Yeah…don’t know her much outside of Clockstoppers.
Joel Murray…Professor Triffid of Buzz Lightyear star command…MAYBE a professor. But he seems more serious, more actor than comedian esque.
Peter Sohn…Russel was based off him? Interesting…ahh here we go…played Emile…looks like he’s more on the Story/Artist list than voice acting. Huh…hope he gets a good role, this guy seems to heading places. I’d think student rather than professor.
I wonder what type of character Dave Foley is going to play.
I really hope he’ll play a mysterious monster. Not for any Foley-specific reason, just because I want to see more of these monsters portrayed by Pixar. A funny Abominable Snowman is not enough. I want to see Loch Ness. I want to see Bigfoot wearing a poison ivy diaper on his head!
That would be a neat idea! I could picture a Big Foot character as a class clown or something.
