Central Monsters University Discussion

^ I’m with pixarmilan. Pixar teasers have rarely been my favorite (I remember being really doubtful when the Ratatouille one was released).

I don’t mind if the film is mostly comedy, as the first one is largely that as well, but I do hope there’s more emotional depth to the film than, say, Mater and Lightning’s relationship in Cars 2 (and also the development of Mater himself). That movie didn’t do much for me in that area, so I hope MU can really bring something fresh and touching.

It looks like a lot more is going to go into this than Cars 2, whose teaser probably annoyed a lot of people.

rubs hands Ahh…years and now a new piece has been presented. Outside concepts and menial glimpses.

Let see, the trailer. I’ve looked at all four, albiet in a brief way, and all seem the same aside from, yes, Wazowski’s line. For those having difficulty hunting for those, here you go:

Huffington Poster
Class President? Heheheh.
Apple Trailers
I can’t go to class, I’m not wearing any clothes.
Yahoo
My homework ate my dog.
Walt Disney
My pony made the Dean’s List.

Huffington and Apple I think I’m sure of, the other two, may have mixed up, but those four are definitely the lines.

Overall, the trailer seems to have…stereotypical college cliches. Jocks (Sullivan and “Big Red”), nerds (not the smart kind…ie…Wazowski), wild parties, chugging (chicken guy), and simple-turned elaborate pranks.
But this is a teaser, perfectly understandable to see the embodiment of the film’s premise.

Animation-wise. Wazowski seems…the same. Maybe less stress on his movements, and…the previous discoloration he had when older. As for Sullivan, less “shaggy” and more lean than he was before (or is, or…whatever).
Yeah I agree with Ballboi that something seemed “off” about the hallway scenes. Again, though, this is a teaser, so development for the “final touches” is going on. Plus, a LOT of Monsters Inc. took place at night, or in dark areas. Here, we’re facing the light. The animation on the other monsters, however, seem…I dunno…something does seem off.

Ummm…“Big Red”, which I’ve nicknamed the big red monster razing at the start of the hallway scenes, seems to come off as one of the “new” characters, in terms of one we won’t just see in the background. The “insectoid” guy might also be one, as he helps out Sullivan’s joke by shining the flashlight (as per “the plan”).

shrugs Of course, can’t help but mention Randall. Didn’t seem he was in this trailer. Which, at least to me, is good for several reasons.

So far, still premature…but at least something came up.

Oh yes, I nearly forgot…the comedy v.s. emotion thing.
College, in some regards, is about growing into maturity. We’ll, hopefully, see Sullivan turn from this jock (which I had guessed he WAS in his early days) into the hard worker we see him in Monsters Inc. Wazowski…not much raised in maturity.
So my guess is…Sullivan will be the focus of an emotional change, while Wazowski is the focus of the comedy. Funny enough, just like the first film. It’s the balance that makes a Pixar film. A purely funny film IS good, not saying it isn’t…but if Pixar wants to live up to it’s high standards, it needs to maintain that balance.
For instance, take away Lotso’s emotional torment in Toy Story 3 or the climatic scene in the incinerator and replace it with jokes, and the film wouldn’t be as powerful as it was for most people.
This was teaser, and it was full of jokes. Good, these days people need them. But when the finished product finally emerges, the balance is what will make it great.

Yes, the trailer is here:

It looks funny and interesting so far, but I’m wondering what Randall will be like.

I don’t think Randall went to college and it would be weird to have the same villain twice.

I feel that there can be a few ways of an emotional side to the story:

  1. Towards the end when they’re friendship is coming together for some reason Wazowski wants to cheat/not study/something wrong against a test and Sulley knows it’s wrong and says no so they separate. (Something a long those lines that relate to a big test)

  2. Wazowski is bullied and Sulley is a jock, and Sulley is secretly becoming Wazowski’s friend but he doesn’t want his “jock” friends to know and somehow they find out and that can make a moment where he has to choose between his best friend or being popular.

  3. At the beginning of the film Sulley makes a big prank to ruin Wazowski forever which will “detonate” (not necessarily a bomb but will go off) and Sulley becomes his friend over the time. But Sulley realizes that the prank bomb-thing is still there and it blows up and Mike loses his trust in Sulley and Sulley tries to explain he did that before.
I have more ideas, but what do you think?

I see what you mean, but he is listed on IMDB.

imdb.com/title/tt1453405/

Randall is very intelligent. He may or may not have gone to college, but degree or not, doesn’t change that he is. And yes, Randall is in this. That does not, however, “lock” him into the role as whatever antagonist (if any) is in this. Afterall, even if just a prank, Sullivan is coming off antagonistic from the trailer.

As for emotional side. taps lip It’s the jock/geek dilemma. One thing to keep in mind is that it’s mentioned that Sullivan and Wazowski eventually come together to try to be Scarers. But there is one solid fact that breaks the mold. Wazowski, is not a Scarer, and he won’t be one. He, later, rides Sullivan’s coattails as if he were one, sharing success and probable fame.
Now, how does Sullivan break his jockish (or jerkish) nature? How does Wazowski take his failure to become one while Sullivan does?

Oh snap you’re right! He’s in the movie. I’m in shock. :open_mouth:

I’ll give you that Randall is intelligent but his flaw is envy. His inflated ego is very vulnerable to the slightest criticism not a sign of a scholar but an ignorant individual.

Now that I know that he’s in the movie, I’m guessing he’s probably a nerd who gets picked on by Sulley the jock. Randall envies Sulley’s life, which turns him evil.

Do not be too shocked. Sullivan, Wazowski, and Randall make up the male headers in M.I.
Huh…wonder if Celia will have some friends that take up the two vacate slots for the female headers. (Somebody say ROZ? ehhh…ok…she…kinda…was…but that’s just creepy now that I think about it…ooooh…jeez)

So is Wazowski’s, but he isn’t locked in antagonistic role.

Your right in the first section there. I wouldn’t place Randall up in the nerd way…plus, the one getting picked on here, as per plot demands, is Wazowski. Hmm…my guess is that the person who gets Sullivan to buckle down and think seriously about his future IS Randall. Despite what others think about his antagonistic nature before hand, Randall IS a great scarer and IS a hard worker (heck, he manged to keep up with his job and numbers while working on the machine).
Now, of course Sullivan and Randall have their differences. Perhaps something does occur that causes some strain. It’s…difficult to picture what it could be at this state. Afterall the animosity of things is between Randall and Wazowski, not Sullivan and Randall.
Afterall, Wazowski and Randall push each other in the future, with Sullivan trying to stay out or smooth things over.
Add in to the fact that Randall and Sullivan are elite scarers in the future, while Wazowski is an assistant.

However…you do have something about the envying life (though I know that in the future, Randall has his reasons, and it’s not jealousy in the normal sense). I picture Sullivan had parents who loved him, gave him what he needed. Unfortunately this gave him more of a slacker attitude (I can picture him straightening up and being “oh that prank was just uhh…a study on…nightlights in a kid’s room!” if his parents ever showed up. Trying to cover his tail on what he was really doing).
Randall, I doubt, had that sort of slack. Probably brought himself up more than anybody else. I wouldn’t classify him as a nerd…smart, but not a nerd. Wazowski is taking that role, apparently.
Randall can be quite a wild card here…imagine the sort of pranks (perhaps to sort of “experience” Sullivan’s way of things to “loosen up”…perhaps…his indulgence backfires) he could commit WITH Sullivan.
The interaction with Randall might change things for the better for Sullivan, but form the animosity between him and Wazowski. Of course…“something happens”. But what the “something” is…that’s a whole other thing entirely.

Wazowski’s relationship with Sullivan is brotherly; brothers do pick on each other it’s called tough love. The vibe that I get from Wazowski towards Sullivan is no envious like Randall’s but more of a fan-to-hero. Randall is a top scarer but he cheated if you recall, he worked overnight hours unsupervised. His intentions however were selfish not because of a strong work ethic. Randall does pick on Wazowski but I don’t believe he sees him as a threat as he does for Sullivan. Sullivan is loved by all and he’s good at what he does. Randall is good but he craves attention and will do anything to get it.

Can anybody identify the last song from the teaser? Thanks!

the last song is “Spandau Ballet - True

I think the teaser’s biggest strength is that it makes us immediately notice the kind of people Sulley and Mike were back then, very different from the ones we know from MI.

Sulley is a cruel prankster, a far shot from the gentle giant he is in latter years.

Mike, on the other hand, will apparently be portrayed as a studious person (He’s sleeping embracing Scaring 101 and yet another book lies open besides him), also different from the Mike he gets to be in the original film.

I suppose that can give us a few clues to where the plot is heading, but I don’t know how I feel about seeing those characters I love in such a different light, both in appearance and personality.

I’m hearing that Kelsey Grammer is going to be voicing Waternoose, replacing the late James Coburn.

IMDB lists him as Waternews, not Waternoose, but that’s not a reliable source.

I think the movie will have to make some sort of connection to MI, by way of Mike and Sulley reminiscing the past, or whatever. It feels more natural that way to lead into the story, because otherwise, I agree with you that it’ll be extremely awkward to have two well-known characters that act and exist totally differently from what we think of them. Not so much of changes in look (looks of a character can change, even in the same movie, George Sanderson anybody?), but definitely in personality.

Anyway, the teaser version of Youtube reached a million views within a single day. How crazily anticipated is this movie??!

Call me crazy, but I think this could pass Toy Story 3 for highest grossing animated film.

I wouldn’t think Monsters, Inc. is more popular than Toy Story, but maybe there’s a chance it can pass it, seeing the trailer’s success.

On the other hand, Pixar’s reputation has decreased with their last two films, so maybe it will hurt the box office.
