Central Monsters University Discussion

All of the teens who will see it because of “nostalgia” will boost the gross significantly. I don’t think it’ll reach Toy Story 3 levels, though.

I don’t think so either. Though I think it could reach Lion King or Finding Nemo.

In terms of character changes, Sulley doesn’t seem to look much different. Mike however seems to have a slightly smaller head and has a retainer, though his eye seems the same size.

I think they both are about the same in difference terms.

And, for some reason, Sulley’s differences make him look more devilish to me, specially in that close up 8D

Here’s an advertisement showing renders of Sulley and Mike. Sulley looks pretty cool. I can’t help but feel like they made Mike look too young. He kinda looks 14-16 when he should look 18 at least. It’s the size of his head that bothers me. He also seems to look shorter than usual when compared to Sulley.

On second thought, he actually looks okay. Maybe I’m having a hard time accepting it because I’m so used to his original look. Forget everything I said before. He looks great. Does look a little dorky though with his retainer and his goofy smile.

I think that the emotional side of the film will be that Sullivan is a jock, and Wazowski is a loser who gets picked on. Sulley secretly befriends Wazowski because he feels kind of bad for him, and somehow when their friendship is at it’s highest Sulley’s “cool” friends find out. Sullivan will then have to choose between his best friend (Mike) or being popular. Does that sound reasonable?

Brave still has a relatively small number of reviews and plus it comes out tomorrow, so the score still has a chance of rising. And so they made one bad movie, that shouldn’t hurt them that much.

Once they reach a consensus it’s pretty hard the score changes too much.

And I’m not even saying the film is bad (or Cars 2, for that matter, because I did like it), I’m just talking about reputation.

Sadly, a percentage of people give up on things easily, which is why I’m saying Pixar box office might not be as strong for a few years as it was back in 2010, when they seemed to be in their prime (plus Toy Story’s popularity)

Anyway, this is all very unpredictable.

Pixar has to reconcile the best friends since kindergarten line.

If I’m not mistaken, he says Sulley has been jealous of him since kindergarten, not that they were actually friends.

Tough love is generally a term used for parents in relation to their siblings I think. But what you said still made sense…
As for “brotherly”, considering they, apparently, dislike each other at the start of this venture, their relationship would be anything but. At the end? Yes…though I would think Sullivan has admitted that Wazowski has as big an ego as Randall can.
Fan-to-hero? Well, I wouldn’t say that Wazowski is envious of Sullivan…in the future. That’s because, despite what others think…Wazowski is actually a dang good assistant. Ok that MIGHT only apply “on-the-scene”, as we see him able to fill canisters quickly and efficently…as for the after-work paperwork…that’s subject to debate. By that time, Wazowski may see that his position is important, but he lives his “if I were a Scarer” life through Sullivan.

Ahh…new. I’m sensing your saying that because Wazowski did. Overtime, especially in times when energy is in short supply (which we become aware of), at an energy collection facility would be a welcome. Randall’s intentions, as we see at the time, were to facilitate a child for the testing of the Extractor. So that in itself, isn’t cheating. Wrong, yes, for reasons, but not cheating. Now if he WAS doing scarering…well that’s not cheating. That’s providing additional canisters, additional power for the city. It’s overtime pay, not cheating.
If I recall…the “score board” as it were…is inactive after normal work hours. So in essence, not cheating. While the canisters don’t count toward that score board, they do count toward overtime pay and extra power for the city. This is, like said, a welcome. The city was experiencing wide spread blackouts and power shortage.

Oh no, Wazowski’s not a threat to him, but he certainly is a lip.
Randall doesn’t have as much…dislike of Sullivan himself. If he REALLY hated Sullivan, he would have planned to kill him outright (like “a villain”). However, he states himself that once the Extractor gets out, Sullivan would be working for him. Dead can’t work heh.
Yes…Randall does crave attention. Though…in a casual way. Which we see. He took his “getting ahead” with simple pride and a “see, I can do it” attitude. Sullivan, however, takes to high-fiving everyone and acting like it’s a huge deal he stays on top.
That is not to say Sullivan isn’t a good guy. He is. He just…got in the middle.

The song was romatic…which is weird to me. First everybody going crazy in the halls with rock music…then slowing it down in the room. But ehh teaser so, anything goes.

I always knew Sullivan was a jock in his early years. He’s got that “like” aura around him, which I caught instantly. In these days he’s a prankster and probable class clown. Later on, he buckles down…BUT he’s still a likeable guy…but in a GOOD way. Likeable because he works hard, is a nice guy…

That still seems weird to me. Maybe Wazowski was a studier…but maybe something made him give up…or maybe he actually IS a studier, but it’s hard for him to concentrate (maybe once IN a job, he figured to just dump the whole thing). Maybe THAT’S…
Huh…would it be interesting if Randall assisted Wazowski in his studies…but Wazowski failed somehow, thus failing to be a scarer, and that’s how their animosity started?

Well remember SOA, this is a teaser, so anything goes in it. Essentially piling in “all you need to know” in a splash of scenes. So it may not be to this degree. You have to slowly come to understand something (thus, who they are, why they are, etc.), instead of being bombarded.

Kelsey Grammer? Really? Huh…that’s an…interesting choice. Waternoose has lived for a LONG time…let me see…well depends if he’s inherited M.I. or not…

That is an interesting prospect Princkle. I always thought that it could be a sequel/prequel (though a proper, ACTUAL sequel, as a whole, is needed). Yes, a reminiscing…which would actually fit VERY well at this time.
Sullivan is CEO of M.I., a role he was NOT meant to be in, or trained for. The pressures of such a demanding job (and interactions with some monsters he DID go to college with), might remind him of “better days” where he had more freedom.
Celia and Wazowski’s growing relationship might also spark a “hey…remember when we met?” moment.
And perhaps, the beginning of it all is an all-out arguement between Sullivan and Wazowski.

I wouldn’t be surprised Ballboi. M.I. fans are rather loyal (some more than others), so it’s been highly anticipated.

Toy Story’s “main moment” has passed. It’s future is uncertain, but it’s path has been carved into marble and will remain in the annals of animation history.

Last two films…that include Brave?
But yes, maybe it’s what (Ballboi?) said before about the weird animation in the hallway. Could Pixar be loosening the slack on their latest films in several departments?

Ahh yes, the first viewers…when you love something and the new of that something comes along, you can’t help but want to see it.

To me, Sullivan seems thinner and his fur is a lot more sleeker (less pricky). However, this also means easier animation too…since before they had to track each and every fur strand when he moved.
As for Wazowski, a little hard to judge considering half the time he was covered in reflective material.

Ahh, there we go, that’s helpful. Yeah, when you put those two together something seems…off…I dunno…something…

That’s a reasonable guess Wazowski. Erm…yeah…surprised nobody picked that name here…
Anyway, this is the core of what could happen. As for befriending Wazowski…I don’t know…it could be the whole “Jock needs Geek’s help” thing. You know, failing in a subject, of which he needs help, and he slowly becomes friends.
I still can’t picture Wazowski as the smart-geek type at this moment…

You are right SoA, but let me see…
“You’ve been jealous of my good looks since fourth grade”
Yeah…that was the line when they were coming out of…out of…that WAS in the film…oh my…continuity break. Unless Wazowski was being a simple toff and blowing that out his nose, which isn’t that unlikely.
A text entry also places their first meeting IN kindergarten, when Sullivan mistook Wazowski for a…chair or a stool something like that…

Nexas, I wold suggest to you the quoting option.

It would make easier to understand to which posts you’re replying to

True, though some individuals have been…disregarded due to their overly-long posts. The breaks generally incline to the next post, or reference something specific in whatever post is next in line.
Considering shaky ground involving who I defend on occasion, I felt it best not to rock the boat.
Ah, I do recall putting names of those of who’s post I’m replying to. I’ll try to remember that, it’s been awhile since I’ve posted.

any of you guys think randy newman will return to score the music for the film? they gotta have the song “if i didnt have you” in this movie. prob toward the end when mike and sully finally get along.

I remember reading about Newman being in talks to return, but I don’t remember where.

And, Nexas, there’s no rule against long posts, so don’t be shy to quote (properly, of course). Your posts are long enough as they are, and it only would make them more legible.

I kinda wish they showed Randall. They have been really silent about him.

Considering Sulley seems to be the big bully in this one, I’m wondering what Randall will be.

Maybe they’ll establish him as a friend of Mike and Sulley.

Hmm…long enough as they are? Very well, I’ll see about it. It’s more caution than shyness really.

It is interesting. The focus IS on Sullivan and Wazowski (cough), so it’s understandable they’re the focus.
What gets me is the event that’s going on. Is it a celebration because the “jocks” have won something or what not? Now, Randall’s a hard worker, he’s probably studying in his own room (or at least TRYING to with the ruckus). But wouldn’t think he’d be too uptight about joining.
But maybe in his early school days Randall WAS picked on and wasn’t able to do anything about it. Maybe since the celebration involved hazing and what not, he just didn’t want to get involved and get the short end of the stick like Wazowski.
Then again, if one guesses time-frame, Randall might arrive later on. Smart as he is, might be too young to teach (tah!), so maybe exchange student?

I wouldn’t put Sulley as…well…no…hanging Wazowski up like that later on pushed things a little over the top. And Sullivan practically documenting the occasion on camera seems to show he’s…kind of jerk in his young age. (perhaps his “documenting” comes into forms of blackmail??).
I wouldn’t think of Randall as the geek type like Wazowski. He’s smart, but probably solitary, maybe even a bit mysterious. Or maybe one of those “rags-to-genius” types that have little money but got a grant or something because of their contributions. We already know Randall’s a good mechanic and handy with machines.

That’s likely. Blue, Green, Purple. Interesting combination. It’s kind of like Huey Duey and Louey (right?). Sure their colors signify who’s who…but that same kind of thing went for the Chimpmunks…if anybody is getting where I’m going here with this.
In the future, Wazowski talks big and doesn’t do some of his work, and seems unaware of accomplishments (such as his record as Top Assistant) he does have. Sullivan’s a nice guy, works hard and just wants to make a living. Randall (baring Scream Extractor), is equally a hard worker, but comes off cold.
In the younger years, Wazowski’s a geek and Sullivan’s a jerk? Complete 180. So who’s to say they won’t do that with Randall?

Another thing to keep in mind is that this is…apparently…10 years before the events at Monsters Inc. Whatever caused the animosity between the three may have not even HAPPENED in college.
Sure, Sullivan’s change from jerk-to-thoughtful seems almost certain to occur. And, apparently his friendship with Wazowski as well.
Maybe they WERE all friends. And though I have mentioned flaskbacks before, and as somebody had said in this topic (can’t remember) as well, it would be interesting. “We were friends…look at us now”.
Imagine the three graduating with smiles and the like, having a few words as they leave the university gate to begin their careers. Everything seems to be looking up.
Flash forward to now…Sullivan’s CEO, without training, unprepared for the demanding position he’s been locked into to keep M.I. from going down. His relationship with Wazowski is strained. Wazowski himself is advancing his relationship with Celia (and I doubt Sullivan has time with all he has to do to seek companionship, thus causing some form of jealousy). And Randall’s in the human world (or is he at this time?). This have…become far difficult, far serious. Struggle, Commitments, Regrets.

Tough love is a term used widely not only reserved for parent and child. Wazowski and Sulley based on the teaser trailer have some sort of brotherly relation; especially in college guys refer to one another as bros. Hazing is part of that complex dynamic that only college dorm buddies would understand. It’s a way to escape from the boredom of academics. Wazowski does have an ego but it’s nowhere near as distrustful as Randall’s. Wazowski does live through Sulley’s success but that’s not solely because he’s an incompetent scarer he’s just a better motivator/trainer. As for the scoreboard if I recall correctly I don’t have the movie near me, Wazowski mentioned that Randall was bumping up his numbers. Wasn’t Randall’s helper also holding a notepad at that time? Possibly jotting down how many canisters he did in order to put them in later? I would never say that Randall at the get-go (gecko mind my pun) wanted Sullivan dead but he like all villains decides that he’s “in the middle” and must get rid of him. By the way I just noticed that you have him as your avatar Nextar lol
