Central Monsters University Discussion

That’s what I meant by the cameo. A subtle thing. Perhaps as subtle as Woody’s relationship with Bo Beep, not expressed fully, but hinted at.

Sorry about the rant… just a little overwhelmed yesterday… and IDK, I just still love Sulley even if he’s a bit of a prankster…

I used to like him and Mike when I was younger, but now I’m leaning more towards Randall. I think Randall is my favorite Pixar villain.

Nexas: I’ve been a lurker for years and have had this account for quite a while, including one over at Bogs’ Board. I’ve read about the plenty of theories that fans have come up with regarding Randall, which were pretty fun to discuss. This is the first time in a long time that I’ve had a chance to participate in a board discussion again.
The opportunity to watch the movie is still there, but it was disappointing to have to wait another half a year. But oh well.
I don’t mean to turn this thread into something Randall-centric, but it does involve the movie.
Okay, so if Randall was 15 as a college freshman, assuming he was an extremely gifted student that whizzed through all of elementary, middle school, and high school, then Sulley and Mike must have been 28 at the time of the movie? They looked a bit older though.
As far as relationships go, there are people who have dated since high school who end up marrying. My brother has been in one of those relationships, 8 years and counting and all through his college years, since high school. It all depends on how committed a person is, but that’s way off from the original movie discussion. Just my two cents. But I do agree that the relationship Mike and Celia have in MI is not one that has been going on for ten years; they were both absolutely elated with each other. That’s more like the initial high’s and butterflies of a romantic relationship. My thought is that in college they probably belonged to very different crowds.

Spirit of Adventure, the theory on Randall’s age came from another forum member. There was date on the newspaper that Randall was holding at MI, with Mike’s picture on it, and then she used another bit of other canon information, or so we were told, to do the math to get Randall’s age. But depending on how consistent Pixar wants to be with these details, none of that will matter in MU since everyone is being chucked back into college together.

Yes, I’ve seen the newspaper, but I think it only proves the date in which MI is set, not Randall’s age. What other piece of information did she use?

Obsessed with Pixar
Don’t worry about it. Sullivan is a good guy at heart, he just had a jerkish side of him with how he grew up. He eventually grows out of it…and a certain law-breaking moment aside, is a good overall person.

Ah, I knew your name sounded familiar, but couldn’t place it. I have a lot on my mind these days so it skipped in my head for the time.
That seems about right in those calculations, but remember…Sullivan appears to be one of those “jock” stereotypes, so his achievements may have been lacking and he may have been held back. Same deal with Wazowski. It’s difficult to say really. One thing to remember is that some bits with Randall (such as his crows feet and such) that may make him look older are actually a result from his work on the scream extractor. Sullivan, I’d imagine, is someone who is very fit, so his physical appearence may betray how old he might be. Wazowski…I have no idea to be honest at the moment.
It may be off the movie discussion, but the general material is well welcomed and shows a personal touch and opinion on the matter. That elated, hubby-dubby feeling you describe as the initial start of a relationship sounds on key. The whole “Googleybear and Smootsiepoo” back and forth they have seems to establish this. As for in college, I picture Celia as either a cheerleader (we might see her in the games as i imagine Sullivan is in their version of football) or one of those smart girls with troubles of her own. Wazowski I imagine is a non-smart-geek.

SOA is right in that regard, that it shows when the date was set. As for Randall’s age I can’t recall…I know it was established somehow but for the life of me I can’t remember that far back…

A new international poster’s been released:

pixartimes.com/2012/11/30/intern … -revealed/

The level of detail on that one is amazing. I like it a lot more than the other one that was released today, which wasn’t bad at all either.

Here’s a comparison:

These poster are so crazy awesome! I adore these teen versions of my fave monsters

Wow i love the second poster! Can’t wait until the first trailer!

I’m really looking forward to this film! Especially after seeing those posters  I really like the second one and I find it really awesome that Mike has ‘Little Mikey’ with him

Really, really excited for this film now!

They look great! I can’t wait to see this film.

These posters are great! They boosted my excitement so much! Loving all the little details included on the second one.

I don’t now if you guys saw these pictures.

Yes. They remind me of a theory I had when they first announced this film.

Don’t you guys think that maybe they’ll switch protagonist in the prequel? So that Mike is now the main character over Sulley, who was the protagonist in Monsters, Inc.?

They did exactly that with Cars 2, where McQueen was no longer the protagonist, but Mater was.

I think that’s very likely… And a bit worrying when you think to what happened to Cars 2… I bet half the movie will be about Sulley (and Mike ?) looking for the most imaginative prank ever.

Yes, promoting the comic sidekick to protagonist may be dangerous, but Mike is a much stronger character than Mater, so I hope the results aren’t the same.

I think Mike is a strong character in his own right. It should work.

I just hope he isn’t too immature in this movie, considering we are “downgrading” his character here.

Aw goodness, Mike is so adorable!
But aside from that, I think it’d be cool if Mike had a bigger role than before, but honestly, I think it’ll be more of a “buddy picture”. I don’t think that Mike’s role in Monsters Inc was any less than Sulley’s. And you know, I’ve always felt that Cars 2 was more of a buddy picture, even if Mater’s side of the story is told more. Like say, I’m cool with whatever happens; Pixar just keeps making magic! (And pleeeeease don’t debate me on this…)

I don’t mean his role is lesser, but the protagonist (as in the function he has in the script) was irrefutably Sulley.

Same has happened in most buddy films by Pixar, so I don’t know if this will be an exception. Buzz, Mike, Dory, Mater and McQueen (in Cars and Cars 2 respectively) have served as important plot points in their buddies’ story lines, which is why Woody, Sulley, Marlin, McQueen and Mater are the protagonists and not them.

Anyway, I’ve seen very little of MU to really tell, but I just have the feeling of another role inversion.
