Central Monsters University Discussion

Love that teaser/trailer! Now i wanna go to the MU!

Here’s the source of the Randall image, proving he’s legit:

It also showcases another character, probably antagonistic.

I saw that picture on a Animation blog but it looks like Randall isn’t a bullie.

I guess, he’ll be some kind of sidekick of the character behind him, who maybe is the bully, and then, by the end of the film, he’ll take over.

Aside from the spectacles/wallet/watch glancing. Has anyone even LOOKED at this poster, at least in relation to Randall?
There is little to no indication that Randall will be a “bully” here. I mean really…look at those hands. There’s an uncertainty to them, a nervousness. This is also brought on by the uncertainty in the eyes and the cheeky (not sinister) grin. From this, I don’t see anything that shows he was an unpleasant individual (at the very least, THEN).
While I don’t see Randall as a geek, he could come off that way, and I doubt a geek (especially as young as he looks) could be elevated to jerk status in a short time. Especially if Pixar is working a Revenge of the Nerds like pathway.

Now that guy behind him…that’s your bully. Check out his jacket (or whatever it is, sweater)…Roar Omega Roar (Alpha Betas anyone?). Could take a writer to understand this, but ROR sounds like it’s the “jock fraternity”. I mean from the sound of the fraternity alone, seems pompous. I bet there’s a lot of the sports-oriented winners in there and they’ve become obsessive of their “superiority”. (as a side note, there is NO way that such a group would let a geek, such as Randall, join their fraternity, unless the motive for doing so was malicious.)
This guy screams jock and has a…well not menacing smile, but certainly an uncertain one (the feeling that’s given to those receiving said-smile). He may in fact, be the antagonist, which certainly goes with RotN fashion.

Yes, that happens with some, regrettably. It’s a shame.

I’m guessing you speak from experience?

Although I’m referencing Nerds a lot, MU has been compared a little to it and it’s a good source to draw theory from (and apparently John Goodman was in the film funny enough).
I can make my theories of the plot, but as I have been proven correct before, I am reluctant less it discourage Pixar in a fashion similar to the now-canceled Newt.

Now RoR may seem to be like the Alpha Betas of things. Now given the party-wise of the trailer…I’m thinking Sullivan and Wazowski have been shoveled into a geek-like fraternity (or similar).
As for Randall, he might be there too, unsure. Like Wazowski, he would be an easy target. (honestly, in the “olden days” who wasn’t an easier target for harassment than those in glasses or with braces?). Add in the fact that Randall looks WAY younger than the other two, and that may be another factor.
Sullivan on the other hand…doesn’t have geek factors. Look at him. Buff, strong, has a sense of jokes (that can be corrupted by a certain somebody…). He’s not a geek. He’s got jock material. Now there’s a difference from Nerds. Hmm…I do do wonder…will Sullivan be in a situation of “are you a geek or a jock”?

…Yeah, probably will heh.

Yeah I saw that when I saw Monsters Inc. 3D in the theater.

I really don’t think it says a whole lot about what the movie will actually be about though. Pixar seems to sometimes not really give out much at all about what a movie will be about in it’s trailers.

If memory serves, the MU website says this was a “film” created by two students (well…technically one? They have two heads…well…she has two heads…oh jeez, I hate to be the boyfriend). So while it does show the grounds and what not and a premise of a university, does give a clue to one of these additional characters (coming from concept art), that they (or…both or…ugh…) want to be filmmaker(s).

Whoa… Randall’s a… nerd? :open_mouth: Didn’t see that coming…
On the Monsters, Inc commentary, Randall is described as someone who “was a bully since his high school days and has stayed that way” (not a direct quote). Of course, that’s not exactly a proven fact about him, per se; just a thought on his personality. Seeing him like this is really interesting. I look forward to seeing how Randall progresses throughout the film and how what happens in MU will effect him in MI.

“I always thought of his as a real bully in high school” is also another way to quote it. Of course saying a person consistently stays the same throughout their life shows a very limited view on things.
I’m proud Pixar didn’t take the low road on this. Many were worried they were, but it’s good that they’re being decent in portraying that basically “stuff happens” in life and it affects us.

Personally I don’t see Randall as a nerd. I dislike the stereotyping. Just because he wears glasses (and IS very intelligent. Considering his youthful appearance compared to everyone else, he skipped grades) doesn’t make him a nerd. Though…keeping with the egotistical group, just because he LOOKS like a nerd means he certainly is going to be treated like one on campus.
Indeed, it will be interesting. As said, Randall looks meek and nervous here…far from how he is in the future. So “what happened” to him, if it’s shown here, will be a big impact.
And I mean when you think about it, Randall was aiming to get respect and admiration and the like when he’s older…he may be trying to do that here too. I mean college for some people is freedom, but in some ways it’s also about getting out on your own and making connections with people. Most of the time, it’s good for a person, raises self-esteem. Now for Randall…well…we see he’s more hardened in the future…so whatever happens may be in relation to that, the loss of such things.

I agree with you on pretty much all of that, Nexas. I used the term “nerd” loosely. I guess I just couldn’t think of what the right word to describe this not-so-mean-looking Randall Boggs.

Oh that’s ok, first impressions ha ha.
chuckles Actually a person I know used the word “Adorkable” to describe him heh heh.

My dad was really really skinny when he was a teen/in his 20’s and wore glasses and looked like what most people stereotype as a nerd…but he was never a nerd. lol. Might be the same case with Randall, we don’t really know. We can only wait and see.

Anyway, as for what it said in the Monster’s Inc commentary…it’s probably relatively reasonable that they might change some of that stuff though. So we will see.

Nice ideas about Randall, Nexas, Obsessed, and Minty Fresh! While I am loving the positive energy and hype for this film, I am still wondering when we will see a trailer with actual footage from the film in it. Then watch the posts start coming in like crazy!

I personally really like the looks of Randall from that poster—it’s definitely different from how I’d have imagined him at this age, but I can’t wait to see what his motives in the film are.

New ‘‘Monsters University’’ banner unveiled!

I’m glad to see the Production Designer is the same guy who was Production Designer on UP, Ricky Nierva. And he was Charcter Designer on the orignial Monsters, Inc.

That’s pretty cool! I dont think I’ve seen any of that stuff before. So Randall’s gonna have glasses? Is he gonna be like the nerd character?

I’m happy to hear this too.
I’m getting a bit hyped about this film now, but trying not to get too excited for the chance of disappoint…
saying that I really don’t know what I expect/want from this film. I didn’t really warm to the idea of a prequel initially, but the trailers look pretty fun, so if I just go in to have a good time and not think too much I doubt I’ll have any complaints.
I’m really hoping we get an actual film footage trailer soon though. eeeee! excited
