Central Monsters University Discussion

Well whatdayaknow…seems bits here imply that Wazowski and Randall may have been friends. Interesting.

Any word that The Good Dinosaur teaser will be releashed with it?

I know this is kind of random, but I just love how Mike [spoil]holds up that A+ assignment loud and proud[/spoil]. Who would have thought years earlier? Who knows, maybe I’ll turn into a jokester someday too!

The more I see of this movie the more I’m getting convinced that it’ll be great, I actually LIKE the fact that it’s not an original movie, because we see so much great stories can be told with these characters, and if the story is good you’ll hear no-one complaining about sequels (and in this case prequels)

The trailer itself to me feels like a mix between A Bug’s Life // Toy Story 3 // Monsters Inc, with all these rich colorful characters, I just LOVE it!

Yes, that has been my theory since day 1. This trailer confirms it.

I had the suspicion they would do it since the same thing happened with Cars 2.

I like this trailer a lot. I’m glad the trailer isn’t just an unappealing series of pranks on Mike like I was expecting it to be (like the trailer for Brave was).
I was at first pretty doubtful about this movie, but now I’m actually looking forward to this !

And did you notice the monster-ified AMC Pacer at 0:17 ? First trailer, and already an easter egg !

The trailer is kind of badly edited, but the jokes are really funny so far. I can’t wait.

Anyone else notice [spoil]the background at 1:57? The design of the structure and the smokestacks look like they’re by the Monsters, Inc building. Plus, the fact that the mom had to drive them there suggests that it’s far off from the university. Not sure why they’d have to head over there, but seems interesting and I haven’t seen anyone else pick up on it yet.[/spoil]

That caught my attention as well. According to MI these two had been friends since Kindergarten but MU decided to ignore that. I’m ready to believe it was just a slip up on their part.

Anyway, did anyone see Randall holding cupcakes with hearts on them? And yeah, sitting next to Mike Wazowsky in class. Shock! I’m super excited for the movie now.

I have to agree with Bryan that the editing on the new trailer is kind of weirdly clumsy, but the film itself looks fantastic and this really put aside most of my concerns. The jokes are all solid and I really, really like the character designs of the new monsters. It all has a very classic Pixar feel to it and I’m eager to see how the character dynamics are going to play out.

Count me as very excited

$5 says that [spoil]the dean is the villain[/spoil].

I believe Dean Hardscrabble is a neutral party. In one form she is shown strict and intimidating, but why not, the students are there to learn how to be scarers, to use what is at their disposal to be frightening.
Later she is shown to be scared of a certain “dangerous” thing going on, i.e. the closet door, proposing she does, indeed, care about the students.

To me, the antagonists are actually a fraternity, along with Sullivan and Wazowski’s own “inner antagonism” (representing as Sullivan’s jockish attitude and Wazowski’s obsession to be a scarer (which takes him to dangerous heights)). So it’s a form of self-conflict and peer pressure.

Yeah, it could be a fraternity.

But I did hear that apparently the dean [spoil]kicks Mike and Sully out of the scare program[/spoil].

OK, so I haven’t seen the trailer yet (I’ll probably see it on the Wreck-It Ralph Blu-Ray) and I seriously am getting hyped, but just a thought on the whole “When Did Mike and Sulley Actually Meet?” thing. Nowhere in MI is it said that they met in Kindergarten, though the Monsters Inc Essential Guide says that. And Mike also made the infamous comment “You’ve been jealous of my good looks since the fourth grade, pal!” in MI as well. Oh, and the line in the MI teaser when Sulley said “Remember 5th grade? When you spent all your time passing notes to Suzy Johnson? We were studying geography!” Of course, the little anecdote in the Essential Guide said that “Sulley sat on Mike, thinking he was a footstool”, not exactly that they’ve been friends since then. I bet that their paths had crossed a couple of time before college, just now in MU, they’re actually having to really deal with each other. Just a theory

There’s actually a more specific one, but I’ll let others speculate for themselves.

Oh that’s true. Due to their rivalry something occurs, and they both fail. It’s not the Dean’s fault, if they failed, they failed. But they do find an option to get back in.
The Dean is doing her job…she heads an entire university made to groom the world’s power suppliers. The university itself has been around for over 600 years…given Waternoose was in his 100s, who knows how old the Dean is. Having to observe and make decisions on the lives of thousands of students can harden a person, and educational constrictions made it more difficult.
I’m not sure, but perhaps even a meeting with the Dean sets up that she gives the two a chance to get back in if they prove themselves in a…certain event.

The reference I suppose people are referring to is “You’ve been jealous of my looks since the 4ht (or 3rd) grade” that Wazowski says to Sullivan on their walk to work. Now this is either actual fact, or just Wazowski taking a jab at Sullivan in a friendly manner.
Maybe Sullivan’s…literal and accidental (er) destructive wake (chasing Archie in a room that’s not even his and causing a mess) remind Wazowski at some point that “HEY! I know you! YOUR the guy who SAT on me!”.
Would be a funny little remembrance heh.

Hahaha! That would be a great bit, especially considering it was only a small portion of the MI Essential Guide. But I think for the Guide they did interview folks from Pixar for info, so who knows? The idea of Sulley sitting on Mike as 5-year-olds made me burst out laughing when I read that 8D

Maybe that’s what starts things…I mean it obviously becomes clear that Wazowski’s studying (or the help from a certain person with that studying) becomes the annoyance to Sullivan later…maybe things kick off wrong when Wazowski recalls where he first met Sullivan and the later (at this time) would be sort of like “you were? you don’t look like a good stool to sit on” insult instead of a “sorry” and things start out from there.

I’m pretty sure they’ll ignore the canonicity of that kind of sources.

I mean, if the next Star Wars is going to ignore the Expanded Universe (and that was taken very seriously), they’ll most likely do the same at Pixar. It’s less restrictive for them.

Some Star Wars/Star Trek/LOTR material can be taken seriously because of how expansive it is. The more expansive, the more that’s in it/speculated. Then again…considering the next Star Wars trilogy is in the future (right?), they might involve the expanded books.
Still a reference is something. I highly doubt it WILL be there in the end, but at the least, it’s a funny thought.

No, they wont. It’s been confirmed.

It was obvious they would do it, as they were written by people who weren’t the filmmakers. Respecting all those ideas would be extremely restricting for the actual crew of the film.

Which is why I think it would be the same case with MU. As long as they respect MI, I’m fine.

Well I don’t follow the Star Wars franchise, so I tip my hat in regards to that. Still, with Lucas Arts being taken over by Disney…hard to fathom just what they’re going to do.
