My research indicates that Pixar is taking the high road with things here. There will be obvious college through backs (protests, hippie-like monsters, pranking/initiations, etc), but there will be some, hopefully, good character development, and people can connect with…well…lets take three main ones…
Sullivan…will be ok at first. But then he’s going to be a REAL jerk. Sorry, but he is. If it’s any consolation, some of it is NOT his fault…but actually caused by the influence of another person (no, not Randall). In the end, however, he’ll realize he’s being that jerk (or that he’s being manipulated rather), and aim to fix things.
Sullivan’s like…well he’s got things made for him. He’s in college, he wants to lay back and take it easy, not thinking too much of his career or future. In the end, he’ll realize he has to buckle down and get serious, or else he won’t have a future.
People can identify with this. They might not know where to go or what to do and try to “live life to the fullest” before it all goes crashing down.
Wazowski goes with a light heart to be a scarer, every young monsters dream. But…everyone doubts him. Other monsters, Sullivan (quite harshly at that), and even his freshman roommate Randall has his doubts. But he doesn’t care, he’ll prove to everyone that he has what it takes…unfortunately, he takes this obsession too high. Breaking and entering, probably theft, working with…well lets say “dangerous material”.
People have felt this. You want to be or do something but everybody says you can’t or doubts you, so you want to prove them wrong, to DO that something or BE that somebody. Unfortunately for Wazowski, we know he does not become a Scarer.
But this leads into Wazowski finding his “true calling” as a very capable scare assistant (and motivator). Sure, in the future Wazowski would still want to be a scarer…but at least he’s found something to hold on to.
I admit it. While I’ve supported Randall, I feel for Wazowski here. I mean you try to be what you want to be, but sometimes the world just doesn’t let you.
Randall…well…it’s seen he is NOT as some people say he is. He’s not a born jerk. No, in fact, he appears as a shy, nervous, and even geeky individual with several quirks. We see him with Wazowski, both studying together (and yes, notice how Wazowski is toward Randall, indicating that they are studying a similar subject. That, or Randall’s tutoring), and heck, cupcakes? Come on, that’s a friendly gesture.
The thing with Randall is…his situation…becomes identifiable as well. Randall’s easy prey (as Wazowski becomes) for some college types. Mostly…a certain fraternity and it’s leader (who ALSO have a hand in what occurs to Wazowski and Sullivan). Like Wazowski, Randall comes to MU to be a scarer…and…for the most part he DOES have what it takes. But Randall’s also the type to try and be part of a group, to get respect, and to quite honestly just have some friends.
He unfortunately seems to get in with the bad crowd. Many of us know this. We’re slightly geekish, but we want to break out. We want to be some-what popular or to have people acknowledge us outside of academics. Sometimes we get in with, yeah, a bad crowd. And I think this is what happens to Randall. Not really his fault (as it is not Sullivan/Wazowski’s fault either for their own stuff), it’s just something that happens.
Each of them appear to…in this they seem to be their own antagonist. Sullivan needs to get on the wagon and buckle down, Wazowski needs to realize his calling is elsewhere, and Randall…well…what happens to him…that’s not resolved yet.
(There is something else I want to note…one thing to remember is, that Randall’s aggressiveness toward Sullivan and Wazowski in the future mainly comes from the fact they got themselves involved and were “in the wrong place at the wrong time”. But whatever happened between the three, yes, made some things stick. But just noting that it’s not as hostile as it seems. I mean I don’t think Randall carries hate for the two to a high degree, as such as they lead him to be more…hardened than he was when he started college.)
