Central Monsters University Discussion

We haven’t watched most of the material for about two months.

Putting aside the fact that this movie is not looking appealing at all from the trailers and clips, I’m seeing serious anachronisms that make no sense. If the movie is set ten years before Monsters Inc. that puts it somewhere around 1884 or 1995. University. Yet it seems like the Internet is already a big part ofUniversity, ev stersen though most universities were not Internet-equipped at that time. The only other explanation is that monsters invented the Internet and somehow people from Earth got hold of their blueprints and brought the Internet here, too.

Furthermore, the websitef for Monsters class of 1990 at earliest and 2000 at latest. shows students from theUniversity You’'d think they’s want to show a more recent class in 2013. But no, they choose to show students from a former class… members helped make the discovery that humor produces even…

Perhaps they are proud of this class because some of itsthat humorady. students aren’t portrayed intent that more recentt THEY are so importa produces even better energy than scaring does. But even if this is the case, it seems ridiculous tha

UNLESS Monsters University shut dclass that attended there. But if that were the case, why do they have a website? They were in thei prime beofre the INtedents were the last great own and these stu

They were in their prime before the Internet came into prominence. So even if this film stands a chance to be halfway decent, which it doesn’t look like, it is already facing a glaring anarchoristic problem that it could have done without.

It is openly stated the film is set in 2013: it has been indicated the school was founded in 1313, and that it celebrates its 700th anniversary at the time of the film. 1313 + 700 = 2013…
Even though as you say it’s reasonable to assume MI was set in 2001, it didn’t really make any precise allusion to which year it was set… So… may be we could suppose MI was actually set in 2020-2030
Personnaly, I don’t really care this twist of chronology… If Pixar had tried to emulate schools as they were in the 90s, it likely wouldn’t relate with its audience, used to modern-times universities with Internet and all.

My city is suddenly full of promotional material for this film!

Seeing how I’ve seen the film already watching all that footage on Trailer Addict helped me appreciate it that much more. Good stuff pixarfan9099! :sunglasses:

I have another reason to celebrate the coming of this film. I was almost positive that I was not going to spend any money on my senior trip last week on any Disney merchandise. And the last ten minutes that I was there, I saw Monsters University caps, T-shirts, toys…and I ended up spending about $40 in those last ten minutes at the park. I was kind of mad at myself for that, but I got the Monsters University cap that Mike is going to wear in the film. I put it on gently and it’s very comfortable. [spoil]It’s Mike’s cap which I know because in the promotional stuff, it has a tear at the front, and so does my cap,[/spoil] which is the best part about it.

1884? 1995?
Mu is set in 1991. If it is true that this is set 10 years before MI, the events that occurred in 2001, then yeah, 1991. taps chin On a page of the Monstropolis Horn if I’m not mistaken.

This seems to say otherwise, though. Do they really celebrate the septuagenarian in the film? (just like WALL-E, by the way!)

shrugs Pixar probably goofed on the date-work. They’re really good at what they do (and Dan, man, you did a fine job on MU in the preliminaries), but they’re not perfect. MI began in 2001, date from Monstropolis Horn, and it’s year-later ending in 2002, from Sullivan’s charts.

This 700th anniversary thing is news to me. As far as I know…from other information, I didn’t see anything about an anniversary, nor mention of it elsewhere in the material (though, in some cases, hard to do with ALL this stuff they’re putting out. Final trailer? surrrrreee). I’m trying not to spoiler too much myself, other than relative info.
Monsters University was founded in 1313…700…2013…ok, that’s fitting up with THIS year which doesn’t make…much sense…that would mean these guys got YOUNGER and had to go to College AFTER their jobs…ok…time machine malfunction…somebody get Randall to fix it.

Ahhh, I think I get it.
MU is celebrating their 700 anniversary THIS year. NOT the year in the film. As of NOW, MU is celebrating their 700th anniversary in the monster world…BUT…the events in the FILM…occur in 1991.
If info says that the 700th anniversary IS in the film, the informer is probably mistaken. It’s a simple mistake to make, considering MU has a “website” that’s on NOW that wasn’t 10 years ago. (well 22 anyway)

I have no idea if MU’s age is mentioned in the film, for the obvious reason I haven’t seen it yet…
However, it has been indicated in official material pertaining to the film. My main piece of evidence is this pretty incredible “alumni newsletter” that was sent to the press: It has a whole article on MU celebrating its 700th anniversary. You can see it here: therotoscopers.com/2013/04/0 … ewsletter/
It also said in an official fun facts list found here : “Monsters University was founded in 1313 — it celebrates its 700-year anniversary this year.”

Something I find strange though, is that this is not mentioned anywhere on monstersuniversity.com as far as I know).

@Nexas: Wow, your final hypothesis makes a LOT of sense! It solve this strange timing problem quite nicely…

nods Yes, glad I could clear things up. It makes sense…considering they had a sorta “orientation” at their studio to promote the film.
Seriously, this film is getting promoted out the tail…trailers, website, orientation, Disney Infinity coverage…it is…wow. There is so much stuff, no wonder there can be some confusion to many things.

That could be an explanation.

But I see a small gap, and it’s that the source of the septuagenarian taking place also refers to some of the events from the film’s time frame.

I have to see the film first, but I suspect we’re simply in the presence of a retcon.

Or it’s just a mistake on Pixar’s end.
To my knowledge…the anniversary isn’t mentioned in the pre-material.

Yes, that’s why we’ll need to see the film first.

But I think that kind of mistakes are conscious. Somebody was bound to notice it, but they probably let it prevail as an artistic decision (which in the end constitutes a retcon)

Yes, we’ll see once the film comes out.

shrugs Still contradictory to me.

Yes, that’s practically the definition of a retcon.

A contradiction that is fixed in a generally unsatisfying way 8D

Well…at least it’s not like the whole “Since the Fourth Grade” discussion

the first reviews are coming in, it’s currently at 67% fresh on rotten tomatoes… 4 good reviews / 2 bad ones. :frowning:

I’ve seen some trailers for Monsters University while I was watching Viva Piñata on Hulu (it’s the only place I can watch it!) and to be frank it’s a welcome change to all those other commercials that don’t interest me at all. :stuck_out_tongue: Seen some nice new footage! Also the only stuff pertaining to the movie apart from the teaser from when I went to see Epic. …Wait, is the movie out already?

Also, after having seen Epic in Dutch and thinking that the Dutch voices aren’t even that bad I have decided to watch more movies in Dutch and the next one will be this one! Because of nostalgia, mostly. I just hope they got the same voice actors.

I already saw the film and it doesn’t acknowledge the current day.

It’s only the social media that’s reporting as if it’s modern.
