I always throught the mother’s one-liners were pretty funny.
They really are. Julie Andrews is a winner!
I’m actually looking forward to this movie, but goodness GRACIOUS is that teaser annoying…
I think the minions singing Barbera Ann is pretty annoying too.
That was anything but a New York accent.
haha so great.
Yeah, I thought that when I first saw the film. It sounds more Russian.
I’ve always thought he sounded Russian.
That’s what i think.
That’s what I thought it was supposed to be!
We are all agreed.
Good then. In the commentary, the director comments something along the lines of that it is supposed to be an accent from everywhere, and nowhere at the same time. Clearly this is code, for Russia.
Everywhere but nowhere? That makes no seeeense.
Well, to clarify, like a mixture of several European accents.
I still hear basically Russian.
I think it’s a Russian accent with Steve possibly having a cold or something.
I think it sounds mostly Russian also. I just thought I would mention the director’s opinion, as it seemed relevant to the conversation.
Oh yeah, defintely. His word is worth more than ours in this matter.
Gru’s accent at the very least has a strong Eastern European flavor. Given DM’s “Spy vs. Spy” element and given that GRU is the Russian military intelligence organization, it’s likely that Russia was at least intentionally suggested. According to IMDb trivia, Steve Carell based Gru’s accent on a cross of Ricardo Montalban and Bela Lugosi, a great way to capture supervillainy and charisma. I hear more of Hungarian wine than of Corinthian leather in Gru’s voice.
I’ve read that somewhere, too. It’s so cool, because both of those actors are so awesome, and have great accents.
Looks so great…
