Dumbo II: Oh. I mean that makes sense. It’s just that DTV sequels have done some of the craziest things sometimes, you just never know. Still, mostly likely not, like you said. And as for the crows, I can not really see what good could come out of it, whether they included them or not. Whatever would happen to them in that film would probably out-of-place, in some imaginable way.
I guess since Atlantis didn’t fail AS HARD as say, Treasure Planet or Home on the Range, it warranted a sequel I guess. I don’t know, maybe it’s just exec. logic. Only the flat-out bombs like those two and The Black Cauldron meant no sequel, I suppose, but I’m just speculating here. Either way, there’s not much sense behind it.
There’s a legitimate reason why Atlantis II not only succumbed to the ‘3 short stories’ formula but had such hokey animation: the ‘movie’ is made up of three episodes from a failed TV series. And admirably, instead of chalking it up as a mistake and burying it from the public, Disney decided to release it, albeit in a different format. The DVD “Tarzan and Jane” is the exact same case.
I’d like to bring up a few sequels that haven’t been mentioned much yet. I absolutely loved Fox and the Hound 2. I have a love/hate thing with the original film, but the sequel re-established and adapted my favorite part of the original: the friendship between the two characters as children, which really is only the first third of the first film.
Tarzan 2: I know it’s a cheap sequel, but it’s impossible to give my opinion of it without giving spoilers. [spoil]So very early in the film, Tarzan is mistakenly pronounced dead by the rest of the apes and then he overhears Kala lamenting his death as well as some gossipy female apes saying that his death is the best thing that ever happened to Kala. And what does Tarzan do about it? Becomes all emo and bonds with a cranky old ape voiced by George Carlin. All he had to was jump out of the bushes and say “It’s okay, Mom; I’m alive!” And that’s why the movie doesn’t work![/spoil]
Yeah, it’s one of those situations where no matter what they’d do there’d be criticism. “The crows aren’t in the film? You can’t just ignore them!”. And if you had them in the same way they are: “That is so racist!” And if you include them but change their behaviour: “You’re being too unfaithful!”
That’s true, thank you for bringing that up. Even still, that means that Disney would have thought that Atlantis was popular enough to warrant a television series! So I’m still a little confused on that.
Actually, I have heard that. Quite a few of the sequels are like that. But, I would prefer they just not exist. I hate the 3-story movies! Hate it! Except for Kronk’s New Groove.
As for Atlantis having a sequel, they knew they could get enough money from fans and ignorant parents to justify it. Brother Bear and Hercules are examples as well.
Agreed. The 3-story method are typically kinda dumb. At least Kronk’s New Groove could think of a couple of funny moments and it the 3-part thing was more of a subtle thing that flowed somewhat naturally with the story.
Are you referring to me? I forgot what I said, and I couldn’t find the original post. But I probably meant Treasure Planet, bc I haven’t seen Treasure Island.
Not to interrupt, but I think Virginia was referring to you, Ellie-Jessie-Eve about Treasure Planet. I think that is what you meant by Treasure Island and I think you posted it in the 50 Disney Films ranking thread. I think it was your last post in that thread.
Ah, alright thanks for explaining you too! I’ve been very absent minded lately it seems!
I just never felt connected to this film. But it is on my list of Disney movies I need to watch again. I do like how the main character is based off of James Dean, and I remember liking his mom a lot.
I don’t know, I saw this film a couple years ago, and it was so forgettable. Which is why I want to give it another shot. Maybe it was just an off day for me or something.
That makes sense. And, some times we h=just don’t like things.
A few weeks ago, I watch Alice in Wonderland(1951) because I couldn’t remember it. I was just like “people like this?” I thought it was boring, and the characters were annoying. But I watched it again the other day, and I actually liked it, and the character Alice. I don’t know. Sometimes I have to watch something twice before I can really decide. Inception is another.
Has anyone seen Hercules: Zero to Hero? It is literally the first 3 episodes of Hercules the TV show. I was really disappointed by that. Even though it was super cheesy, I enjoyed the first 5 minutes that were kind of like an introduction, not part of the TV show.
Sometimes my opinion changes after I see a film. I always try to use the better of my two or more experiences to refer to as my opinion of the movie. Alice in Wonderland might be my least favorite of that Disney era and I barely saw it about two months ago. I thought it was okay and really strange at first, but then I saw it again and thought that it was just silly fun. It may not be excellent but it still has a lot of appeal. I like how Alice has to just push through her struggles to get by in Wonderland. Kind of a bummer how [spoil]it all turns out to a dream[/spoil], but I didn’t mind after a while. And Treasure Planet surprised me, I saw it around the same time as Alice in Wonderland and wasn’t interested in seeing it when it first came out. I watched about 20 minutes and all I liked was Jim reading the book as a kid. So I watched the whole thing about a week later, and I thought it was decent up until Jim and Silver really began to bond. That’s when I really started to like it, and I love that montage of I’m Still Here. And after that, I thought there were wacky parts but it was still enjoyable enough the rest of the way.
I haven’t seen Hercules: Zero to Hero but I was looking for clips on the internet and still couldn’t find any. I do know that there are a couple of TV pilot movies, though. The only one I have and kind of like is Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins, since I love Pixar and the Toy Story films so much. My favorite part is the opening scene when the toys are trying to put the VHS in (Pixar’s involvement), which is kind of sad, but that’s not to say the whole thing isn’t good. It’s a lot like what Andy would have seen on TV, so it was fun enough. It was good to hear Buzz Lightyear being voiced by Tim Allen, and at first in the series I thought it was weird when Patrick Warburton was voicing him, but I later started thinking it was funny since it was only used for the TV series. I also saw Tarzan and Jane a LONG time ago, but I can’t remember a single thing, though I think the show had enjoyable moments. I just don’t really remember either too well.
I totally agree! It surprised me. I think it’s better than some of the classic musicals.
Tarzan and Jane is an atrocity. Why did they make it? Tarzan did have a TV show! I hate that “movie”. And Zero to Hero is about the same. Pretty cheesy, I just loved the first couple of minutes.
Grr, Tarzan and Jane. Forgettable to me, obviously. Forgot if the show was any good or not, it might have been, but I already forgot about it. I didn’t even bother with Tarzan II. It’s unfortunate they’re not worth it since I love the original Tarzan movie. In fact, that was my first Disney (not Pixar) film as well as hand-drawn film that I ever saw in theaters.
Just saw Tarzan and Jane. The recasts were pretty impressive, but I couldn’t handle how Jane was handled. She was one of the strongest Dinsey female characters of the 90’s and in this she was portrayed as a giggly simpleton.
Could y’all please quit with the hating? It just kind of pains me to see so much of it in such a happy place as Pixar Planet ;_; Opinions are fine, whether they be positive or not, but don’t hate. 'tis But a waste of time.
Speaking of sequels, they’re not all bad! I recently watched The Rescuers Down Under and I thought it was pretty cool.
I should see Tarzan 2 sometimes. And I also wanna re-watch Bambi 2 some time as well. Bambi 2 is definitely my fave out of all Disney sequels. It has such pretty animation and stays surprisingly true to the original movie. Of course, it’s a lot more modern, but still.
Oh, Badger! I’m really sorry about that! You are right, I don’t see why any of these are so bad to hate. Well, maybe some people do hate some, and I guess I could understand perhaps. Actually, though, I don’t think a lot of us hate any of these sequels. I think some are just disappointed that the majority don’t tend to live up to the original. But I think you’re right; as long as we’re not bashing anything, a little constructive criticism should be okay, as long as it is that: constructive, not destructive. Opinions, basically, like you said.
I actually don’t hate any of the sequels. I do like a lot of them, even a few of the direct-to-video ones. I do think that most of them are either not that great at all or just don’t live up to the first, but I personally don’t hate or even dislike them. I just may not like some that much, but there are several that I could enjoy. Most people, like you and me, like The Rescuers Down Under which you mentioned. And I haven’t seen either of the Bambi movies, but I’m glad you liked it. It does look better than a good bunch of them, but then again I haven’t seen Bambi or Bambi II. Again, I apologize if it sounded like I was hating on any movie.
You can hate a movie but I also saw where Badger was coming from. With me, I think I just acknowledge how well-made or (mostly) not well-made some of them are. Then again, it is called “Traditionally Animated Disney sequels you liked”, but either the good or bad can be discussed here, I’m sure.
