Great list, queen of painting! Mind if I pinch your titles and place my rankings? Having recently watched the final Shrek, hereās how I rate the Dreamworks canon.
THE GOOD
How to Train Your Dragon (Itās directed by Chris Sanders and scored by John Powell. 'Nuff said)
Kung Fu Panda (I love Kung Fuuuuā¦!!!)
Over the Hedge (Great commentary on middle America suburban expansion)
Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (Truly underrated. I loved it then, I still love it now)
Shrek
THE NOT HALF-BAD
Road to El Dorado (Only because I had a crush on Chel and I dug Elton Johnās theme song)
Monsters Vs. Aliens
Shrek Forever After (It really is the best Shrek since the first, I nearly cried at the end)
THE MEH
The Prince of Egypt (I too, am a little biased because of the religious themes)
Shrek 2
Madagascar 2 (Itās a bit better than Madagascar because of the āfather-sonā element, but only just)
Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas (Itās actually pretty good, but somehow missed that extra something, like Treasure Planet)
Shark Tale (I only like it because I dug the Mafia references and I liked the voice cast)
THE OH GOD NO DONāT MAKE ME WATCH IT EVER AGAIN
Madagascar (I loved it back when I watched it, but now I realize it was a film that was driven by crude humour and cute characters)
Shrek the Third
Bee Movie (Itās like Shark Tale, with bees. And the whole human-bee love subplot creeped me out, the species gap was too huge, unlike say Melman and Gloria).
Antz (God, I hated this movie as a kid. There were some really scary parts!)
And yes, Aardman is really only distributed by Dreamworks, much like how Pixar is distributed by Disney.
Donāt mind at all, TDIT. When I made my list, I never realized just how many films Dreamworks has made, and in a shorter period of time than Pixar. Look at how many of their films are of good quality, though! Just 4 for me. I would say most of their movies put me off because of the obnoxious humor and the visuals.
Pixar: First feature film released in 1995; theyāve made 11 total in 15 years. Every film was a box office hit and has received a minimum 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes with the exception of Cars (74%), 9 of which have been 95% and over. Pixar has received 9 Academy Awards for their feature films.
Dreamworks: First feature film released in 1998; theyāve made 17 films (and one direct-to-video) in 12 years. Most of the 2D ones were flops at the box office. They have two films with at least a 90% RT rating, and an additional 3 with at least 80%. I believe Dreamworks has received 2 Academy Awards for their films. (Correct me if Iām wrong on that one!)
I just saw your post and have to agree with this comment, though Were-Rabbit was a pretty good film. Their shorts really are much better, because they last long enough to flesh out a story but donāt drag on at all.
This isnāt technically speaking my Dreamworks rankings, but what letter grade I give them starting their first film Antz and ending with their last, Shrek Forever After.
Antz: A
Shrek: A+
Shark Tale A-
Shrek 2: A+
Madagascar: B
Over the Hedge: B
Shrek the Third: D+
Bee Movie: A-
Kung Fu Panda: A-
Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa: B+
Monsters vs. Aliens: B (Personally I hate this movie!)
How To Train Your Dragon: C+
Shrek Forever After: B-
I have only seen Shrek 1, Shrek 2,Shrek the third and Shrek Forever After, Magadascar, over the edge,Shark Tale,Chicken Run, Kung Fu Panda and How to Train your dragon.
LetĀ“s just say i liked Shrek 1 and 2. I donĀ“t want to classify the other movies because i would put them in the last place. All of them -__-.
It was a decent movie IMO. It was funny and enjoyable. I personally donāt think itās as good as HTTYD, KFP, PoE, and RtED. You should totally give it a chance Virginia!
IV: If you want a good laugh and a cute story, and wonāt take the movie too seriously, then Megamind is a great watch. The back-and-forth banter between the characters is fantastic, and I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed the movie. Definitely worth your time to see!
I am really glad to see Prince of Egypt getting a lot of recognition. I consider to be the best 2D animated film Iāve ever seen. (Yes better then the Lion King. )
