The one that MissCarrera mentioned before. “Silent and Sexy”; the writing is ehhh but it’s a cool concept and fun to read.
It’s not like we disagree on a lot of things to begin with (ie we are both SUPAH Cars fans)!
Thanks for the tips Mistymara and SallyMcQueen! I just read ‘Silent and Sexy’, but it has not been updated since the first (and only chapter)! Or am I missing a link or something?
Anyway, yes, I can believe in Finn x Holley (although I don’t mind Mater x Holley either, it felt too cliched for me). Peace out.
I mean shipper-wise…may I ask what you ment by too cliched?
TDIT: Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that there’s only one chapter. Sorry about that. It sucks 'cause I want to know what happens.
xCarsLuverx: I think what TDIT meant was that it was too obvious that Mater and Holley were going to end up liking each other. I mean, he’s a rusty tow truck, she’s a sleek spy car; despite their drastic differences, they end up together. It’s a classic story seen over and over to the point where it’s just completely expected now. Of course, I’m not trying to put words in TDIT’s mouth but I completely felt the cliche of it also.

Yeah, what’s weird about it is that the movie was so spy-complicated that, really there wasn’t a lot of chemistry between them…LOL it’s not like they’re Romeo and Juliet or something…that’s why I don’t take whatever relationship they have seriously…
True! There wasn’t really any growth throughout the movie between them, I felt. It was like they meet, Mater’s smitten with her-Holley doesn’t really have an interest in him, SPY SPY SPY STUFF, OH-she likes him now! But being the obsessive shipper I am, I’m of course (probably involuntarily) comparing this to Lightning and Sally’s relationship growth in the first Cars which was a lot more realistic; but that could be on account of anything from the character’s personalities or to amount of actual romantic screen time (which L/S had a lot more of.)
True that…hey do you have a youtube?
I do. I shall PM it to you.
SallyMcQueen and xCarsLuverx: Yup, that basically sums it up. Netbug made the observation that it is very similar to a certain rust-bucket falling in love with a sleek new model robot-movie that Pixar did a few years ago… But aside from the comparison, I, too, felt their relationship was too rushed. At least with movies like Kung Fu Panda 2 or Rango or even the first Cars, there’s a quiet interlude scene where the two romantic interests share ‘alone time’ together to reminisce about their past or discover more about each other. There was something like that in the ‘[spoil]Dents remind me of the good times we had together[/spoil]’ (and probably the start of the melting of Holley’s heart towards Mater), but Finn was there as an observer, which kinda ruined the intimacy of the moment.
In KFP2 for example, there’s an ‘alone time’ scene with Po and Tigress on the junk boat, and the “Even the hardcore understand” gesture-of-declaration (Although I saw it more as a deep friendship climax). In Rango, there’s Beans reminiscing about the moving cactuses to Rango at night. Some poignant or serious scene like that. Cars, of course, the Wheel Well and ‘Our Town’ sequence. In Cars 2, there was very little ‘one-on-one’ dramatic moments, even between the male leads (except for Lightning’s “[spoil]I don’t want your help![/spoil]” outburst). In Pixar movies, there’s always a character revelation or ‘Aha’ moment where we realise how deeply the characters love each other, the culmination of their romantic development in the story. The Incredibles had “I can’t lose you again”, Finding Nemo had “I don’t want to forget”, Wall-E had “(New) Directive”, Cars had “I hope you find what you’re looking for”, etc.
Save for the “Dents” talk, there was no meaningful, squee-worthy scene which had you pumping your fist and going “YES! They’ve finally declared their true love for each other!” or something to that extent. It was just like, oh, I find your attractive and sentimental, let’s think about going on a date sometime. It would’ve been fine if they had simply left Mater and Holley as spy partners or something, but since they wanted to so strongly imply a shipping, they should’ve given us something to work with at the climax instead of suddenly throwing us a “Let’s think of going steady” as an afterthought.
I’m actually writing a one-shot right now which sort of summarises my thoughts and how I would’ve done the climax at Big Bentley - I’ll see if I can finally finish it and post it here, but you guys get my drift right? If there was more honest flirting and a greater chance of a romantic interest, it would’ve been between Finn and Holley, despite the age gap. Not that I have anything against Mater and Holley, but yeah, I simply saw the shipping as too convenient and flippant.
…
Hey SallyMcQueen! Would you like to add me on Youtube? My account’s ‘thedriveintheater’, just subscribe or add me as a friend request.
The thing is though,John Lassiter is Mater’s biggest fan… So,I guess they felt that Mater should be on par with Lightning(plus Mater sells a lot),even though everything pretty much revolves(or should revolve) around Lightning…so they just threw something together (like Mater and Holley) because since Lightning has a girlfriend, then Mater has to have "one" too…It’s really stupid if you ask me…but yeah that’s what the whole movie felt like to be honest…like they threw something together and called it a "movie"…But yeah you hit it right on the head [b:3lbyi15w]TDIT[/b:3lbyi15w]…
I totally just agree with everything you mentioned, TDIT. I also think Pixar tried to make Mater and Holley the “new” Lightning and Sally but because of the lack of the big “Hey, we’re official!” moment, it didn’t really take off as planned. I’m surprised I don’t see a Mater and Holley diecast pack or something. Hey, I would love to read that one-shot and sure, I’ll add you!
CarsLuver: You know, I partially agree with you. It felt the same way to me too, like Mater and Holley were thrown in there so Mater wouldn’t be deemed lonely. I mean, we see in the beginning how sad he is when Lightning goes to dinner with Sally and how desperately he tries to tag along; suggesting that he does feel kind of alone and the “third wheel”. (Bahahaha, third wheel. That fit perfectly. ) But on the other hand, I don’t think it’s stupid. Though cliche and slightly unrealistic, you can’t deny that they’re cute.

Well they epicly failed…
Yeah,I don’t think it was him being lonely,I think it was him wanting to hang with Lightning…I just really don’t care for them…the whole thing with Mater is for shallow reasons…
I know Mater and Holley aren’t as developed as Buzz and Jessie or Wall-E and EVE, but I still think they’re adorable. Personally, I didn’t see any romantic connection between Finn and Holley.
Out of curiosity, who do you like to pair Holley with, TDIT?
IV: Personally, I think she’d be a better fit with Finn, since they already knew each other. I know Mater was adorable towards her and all that, but like others have mentioned here, it felt too convenient for them to be matched up at the end. It would’ve been more original and daring of Pixar to have Finn and Holley as an item, although we don’t really know how old is any one of them. Remember that Mater was a longtime residence of R.S. , and I remember from the first ‘Art of’ book, he’s one of the oldest cars on the ‘age chart’, so for those who claim it is kinda ‘cradle-snatcher’-ish of Finn to date Holley, bear in mind Mater ain’t that much young, either!
Haha, isn’t this the Finn and Holley thread after all? Although, yes, some feel that they should maintain a professional relationship, which is fine, too.
That’s interesting, TDIT! BTW, I loved your one shot. Anyway, I just really like Mater and Holley.
Thanks IV. I just posted the second one up, it’s a scene between Mater and Finn, with a little of Holley. If you like Mater x Holley, you’ll love the final one-shot tomorrow!
Ooh, will read both of them!
For Holley/Finn fics did anyone mention “Awake and Alive” on ff? It’s humanized and a good read but not as good as “Dents of the Mind”. I’m working on putting together my own H/F fic once I finish my current one. I’m already done the first 5 chapters and I can’t wait to reveal it on here and ff. It’s going to be called “Dangerous Keepings” so I hope some of you will read it once I get it up.
Cool! I can’t wait!!
Awesome! That makes me more excited to get it out there!
