For the Catholics: What are you giving up for Lent?

I gave

up beer for lent.

Aww man,

aZnCdn, you beat me to it! I was going to post something exactly like this!

Beer, hehe, well I’m to young to drink, so that won’t be to hard for me! But yeah, Lent’s hard.

 We take it pretty seriously. So absolutely no candy or anything that tastes even remotely good for 40 days.

No TV or movies either. Not even on Sundays!
Yes, lent just began and already can’t wait for Easter!

I used to do Lent . Now my family doesn’t

really have a religion , except my step-dad , he’s jewish , but not strictly jewish .

But since it’s

lent , that means non-meat lunches from school every friday . Goodbye chicken nuggets and chorico ( pronounced

sher-eese ) pizza , hello fish nuggets and plain cheese pizza . eww

I’m giving up television. That’s going to be a

tough one.

you guys are Catholic? Sweet! I thought I was the only

catholic chic here but anyways i don’t know what i’m going to give up. thinking…thinking…

What a fitting question, considering

that I will be going to an Ash Wednesday mass in about thirty minutes

I will actually be giving up ice

cream for Lent. My residence’s cafeteria over here at my university serves ice cream everyday, so I’ve been

eating ice cream everyday ever since I came here. I think this is a fitting day to stop consuming all that stuff

GasDuude- Can?t believe you take lent so seriously. Don?t you just have to give up

only ?one? thing? Sounds like you gave up a hundreds of things. Also I heard on Sunday you can have the stuff you

gave up for lent.

CarFreak- I always thought you were a guy, guess I was wrong. Learn something new

everyday.

I wondered why we don?t eat meat on Fridays. I heard 2 theories, 1) Meat is considered a luxury

so we are supposed to sacrifice that for lent on Fridays. 2) Back in the days Jesus? days they were trying to

boost the fish industry, so they tried to get people to eat fish on Fridays instead of meat.

Going back

to theory #1 since we are trying to be humble and not eat something we enjoy like meat, if you go out and feast

on something like Lobster that would defeat the purpose. So now where do we draw the line? Every Lenten season I

go out for sushi on Fridays. I enjoy sushi very much should I be giving that up as well on Fridays?

Lastly, instead of giving up something for lent I know people who do something for lent like read the

bible foe 30 mins a day. I might try that next year.

aZnCdn-I guess we are supposed to prepare

ourselves for Christ’s coming, aren’t we? And yes, I know you can have what you gave up on Sunday, but we

don’t do that. Just makes it extra hard, I guess!

But you know what, everything tastes so

good on Easter sunday! :sunglasses:

What’s weird is after 40 days without something I usually don’t crave it anymore.

Oh man, I used to do that when I was a kid

but I dont pay attention to it anymore. Probably cuz when i was younger going to a Catholic grade school they’d

sometimes make us write little short answer questions like "what are you giving up for Lent? Why is this

meaningful to you?" or something similar. But I dont think about it now. Although last year I felt like a

horrible Catholic for accidentally eating a burger on Ash Wednesday (one of those days where i’m technically not

supposed to eat meat)

I did that once , except it was chicken nuggets .

Ya I had Pepperoni on my Pizza once on ash wed, Oops

Sooo…

How’s everybody doin?

'bout to drop dead with your craving? (snigger) I actually feel pretty good…it seems the trials of the first

few weeks have worn off!

I couldn’t do it. Well, maybe next year…

I have had a couple of beers during lent, guess I am going to hell :unamused:

However I

still don’t eat meat on Fridays during lent.

Nah - Your not goin

to hell…

It’s not actually obligatory to give something up, just recomended. So even if you slip up,

it’s not the end of the world.

Now if you ate meat on friday, I believe, then you would have a

problem!

And yeah, maybe next year, Bill! (Join my suffering (heehee))

Is it hard giving this up for lent? How difficult is it to keep this habit?

You mean - meat?

Well, not

really. You have to remember you can’t eat though – no slipping up and grabbing some beef jerky from the

pantry!

Isn’t this a little unhealthy? No meat for 40 days? How

will you get your protein?

No no no…

You

can’t eat meat on Fridays and Ash Wednesday. Any other

times fine - that’s the problem, your eating meat, oh, about once every day, right? So on Friday, I have

constantly remind myself not to.
