Gnomeo and Juliet (2011)

Im accually gonna go see it tonight.
I have an odd obsession with Gnomes so this just hit me as a must see!

I’ll give a spoiler free review when I get back!

Sounds good, can’t wait to hear what you think of it!

Okay Im back and here’s the review!

They did stick to the Romeo and Juilete story a bit, classic fuding and the such and a whole love at first site bit.
But before all that we did see some character development on the two to be lovers.
We find out that Juliete [spoil]is’nt the classic delecate girl. She accually ninjas in the night for a flower.[/spoil]

And, as in the classic tale, we dont really know why they are fighting other than [spoil]the crabby old neighbors dont like eachother[/spoil] but seeing all the garden related vandelizim is quite entertaining.
The Reds and the Blues even look at lawn mowers as cars and at one point one gnome [spoil]watches his owner pick out a new mower and gets excited like it was a new sports car.[/spoil]

If everyone’s wondering about the deaths of the two lovers, its kinda in there. Im not gonna put it under a tag or say anything about it, cuz you guys need to see it!
It’s cute and I was accually laughing a good deal.

Some voices to look for:

Hulk Hogan
Dolly Parton
Jim Cummings
Ozzy Ozbourne

Yeah you heard me…Ozzy Ozbourne!

Im my opinion, I give it a 8/10!
Only because of some minor loopholes and the forever nagging image in my head of [spoil]how can they have parents when they are ceramic!? Me and my friend went with that they were sold as a set…but still!!![/spoil]

I thought this was just really fun - it won’t be for everyone, but they did manage to tell the story well enough with it, and the animation, textures, and foley is really well done. The voice acting is also great headed up by James McAvoy (Gnomeo) and Emily Blunt (Juliet). Listen for Michael Caine as Lord Redbrick as well, among others.

I don’t know if someone already mentioned this, but although it’s distributed by Touchstone in the states, the animation is done by Starz Animation (same place that did 9) in Toronto, ON, Canada. That’s why Disney doesn’t have their label on it - to avoid confusion.

Zenoah in answer your last line: [spoiler]I’d agree with the idea of them being a set. My presumption would be that they just fill family roles - much like how kids decide which of their toys are related to who (even if their completely different).

Does beg the question though - if the neighbours help each other clean up the now no longer separated gardens and stop their feud, will they buy a set of littler gnomes with purple hats (as Juliet says ‘a purple hat like some weird guy’) for the two of them to adopt? Red and blue do make purple after all…[/spoiler]

Five: Mind if I call ya Five? (Im a semi 9 fan lol)

Regarding the cut, they so should have done that! [spoil]had the old people come by and put a purple hat gnome before Gnomeo and Juliet![/spoil]

Im glad someone else liked it.
Everyone at my 9 forum just were trashing it. I fully enjoyed it, up until the end. My only issue was [spoil]the dancing. It’s at the end of almost every movie I’ve seen lately! Alpha and Omega, Mega Mind, Despicable Me. It’s kinda getting old…[/spoil]

But me and my friend always stay for the credits, and at the very end, Disney’s name was on it. Disney put out the soundtrack and such.

Ehh, I don’t know about this one for me. I’ll probably see this On Demand whenever that happens. The gnomes look adorable though, and the songs by Elton John… I don’t know! I’m still so confused about this whole Disney thing. Is it Disney or not? Confuzzled

Not Disney, Starz Animation from Canada. They do VeggieTales, and did the Hoodwinked sequel and a majority of 9.

I’m seeing this today (for free) and I think I’ll enjoy it the way any normal person enjoys a colorful and interesting animated comedy. I’m just hoping it won’t be too mind draining and I’ll be able to at least chuckle. It’s definitely not my kind of movie, animated genre or not, and it’s of course it’s not of brilliant quality. But I think it knows exactly what it is and it’s making fun of itself and is light hearted and is not meant to take seriously. Depending on my mood I can or cannot sit through films that are this well… lame, but I have this feeling (wishful thinking) that it’ll at least be more enjoyable than Alpha and Omega. I don’t expect it to be good, I just don’t expect to absolutely despise it.

If this was a Pixar film I’d see it, but this isn’t something Pixar would ever make.
I’ve heard decent things about it, but even if it was fantastic, I just feel like Romeo and Juliet is a tired idea for a movie, and has been done to death in its own universe alone.

For those who’ve seen it, how’s the Elton John songs?

Lol, best review I’ve seen of it (language):

I won’t be seeing it. Maybe on DVD or something. The animation and sound seem pretty well done :stuck_out_tongue:

I haven’t been to TGWTG yet, but I didn’t know the CS would review this. Very funny!

They are used very well within the context of the film, I found. Especially the song Love Builds a Garden - 30 sec. soundtrack samples here: amazon.com/Gnomeo-Juliet-Var … 778&sr=1-1

I’m also glad someone else here enjoyed it. Oh, and I don’t mind if you call me Five. I liked 9 too.

It’s distributed by Disney. It was produced by Rocket Pictures and Starz Animation. What you call it depends on how important development, actual animation, and distribution are to you.

Here are the three main approaches to CG-animated features, with examples.

Type 1: In-house production and single-partner distribution

Examples
Pixar produces, Disney distributes.
DreamWorks produces, Paramount distributes.
Disney produces, Disney distributes.
Blue Sky produces, Fox distributes.

Type 2: In-house development, outsourced animation, single-partner distribution

Examples
TinkerBell–Disney develops, Prana Studios (India) animates, Disney distributes.
Despicable Me–Illumination develops, Mac Guff Ligne (France) animates, Universal distributes.

Type 3: Independent development/animation, negotiated distribution

Examples
Gnomeo & Juliet–Rocket develops, Starz animates, Disney distributes.
Rango–Blind Wink develops, ILM animates, Paramount distributes.
Happy Feet–Kennedy/Miller develops, Animal Logic animates, Warners distributes.

Hope that helps!

Hahaha, thanks for this link, that was amazing.

Ehh Im not too found of the Snob to get reviews from.
These guys are more entertaining and hillarious:

Well, turns out my family and I might be seeing this when our income tax comes around. I sort of hope we do. I’m strangely interested for some reason.

EDIT: nevermind. :stuck_out_tongue: I’m seeing it on Monday with Glenn. 8D

Saw it, enjoyed, hope it continues to do well. Great effort all around, with Elton John songs nicely sprinkled, morphed, and affectionately tweaked on the nose throughout. One of those movies that offers smooth, solid, fun entertainment all the way minus any Big Moments to make the critics swoon and drool with typewriter envy–although Featherstone approaches that territory. Hooray for Kelly Asbury and Starz Animation!

My friend Sam treated me to a movie, and we went to see this.
It was actually really cute, and kept me entertained. Though the reason it was entertaining was that my friends and I are sick-minded, and couldn’t stop laughing and talking through the whole thing.

Good to know, because I’m seeing it now too. It seems ever since the showing of HTTYD in my flat everyones telling me about animnated stuff they want to see now (of perhaps that’s just what it seems now from my perspective) and one of my flatmates wants to see this eventually but can get no-one to go with her, so I volunteered.

Even if the movie sucks it would be fun anyway, she’s a fun person in general.

this film is a success, no one was expecting a breakout from it, 55 millions in its 11th day, and it will probably be the # 1 film of this 4- day weekend holiday
