In our country there is a choice - to buy a pirated DVD (nearly no legal dvds) for some price 10-15$ which is recorded by a handycam in some theater and translated awfully, or to download the dvd-rip from some torrent, but in good quality and no charge. The choice is rather obvious - both ways are illegal, but the second one is more attractive.
So did I…
Ukraine is almost the poorest country, and average wages are even not enough to feed the family. That caused the pursuit for cheaper solutions. That caused piracy. It is not controlled (luckily, cuz I can’t even afford one disc per month) so everyone prefers to buy pirated software/music/movies cuz they are cheaper and easier to get.
Also there are lots of worthless movies - buying them is a waste of money. So it is better to download them and watch and delete than to buy and keep a disc.
I missed the time when Wall-e was shown in our theaters - I was on vacation away from any cinema. Then, I expected Wall-e to be simply a childish adventure. I downloaded it some weeks ago - it seemed to have very high quality… And I watched it…
And now I apologise for downoading - not buying it
Please, understand me and don’t blame me. I know it’s illegal but there was no other way out. I’m now about to save up some cash and order the disc from the Internet.
But…
There’s still a question
HOW it was possible that the DVD-rip was uploaded to the torrent if the official release date is TODAY? The rip is very HQ - no grains, no shiverring, no noise - it is definitely NOT captured by the handycam. Also it has better quality than captured TV broadcasts. So, HOW?
A weird idea struck me. What if it was uploaded by Pixarians themselves? They had already sold their rights to Disney, so they wouldn’t get more from that deal. It is just an idea, so I can be wrong. But anyway, do you share my opinion that the real MASTERPIECES should be free and easy accessed for everyone? The masterpiece is a huge contribution to the mankind, its goal is delivering some moral for the sake of all the people. In the case with Walle, I think it just would be great if all the theaters showed Wall-e with no admission price, so that even poor and homeless people could watch it. Yes, someone can say that each job has to be paid, but I think the creator must define his primary goal - whether he wants to do that job for making money or whether he’s willing to change something in the world and make it better.
As you see, I like typing huge texts. Thank you for reading. Your suggestions?
Well, firstly, I’d like to say that I’m really sad about the problems Ukraine and other countries in the surrounding area are having right now. There was something about it on the news the other day, about how things are difficult there at the moment, and so I can therefore see why people would rather download films like WALL-E illegally. It doesn’t make it right, but I can see the reasoning behind it, and that it is sometimes difficult for people to afford the pretty high price of DVDs.
As for your question, Actine, I don’t have much of an idea as to how such a high quality torrent was available before the release date. Although your suggestion that the Pixarians themselves did it is feasible, on the other hand, torrents and things like that is something that they’re trying to discourage rather than encourage, so I can’t really see the people at Pixar doing something like that.
Your idea of making going to the cinema free is a lovely one, and I wish it worked in practise. It’d be great for absolutely anyone to be able to watch the movie, but as you said yourself, people have got to be paid, and if that means that what could be defined as a ‘work of art’ is not accessible to anyone, then unfortunately that’s the way it’s got to be. Pixar need the money not only to pay their own wages, but in order to make the next Pixar feature and to run the company itself. Therefore, the money that comes from cinema tickets is a massive part of this and without it, it just wouldn’t work.
Though I agree that they should at least make going to the cinema cheaper! Our local cinema has put the prices up- again- to something stupid like seven pounds (around fourteen or fifteen dollars) per person, and eleven pounds for a 3D film! I don’t know how people can afford to go to the cinema often, especially in this current economic crisis.
I agree… Also the pricing for DVD releases is not practical. It costs an estimate amount of $20.(which is equal to 1000php) but it can get cheap to $6 or $5.
Sounds like cheap for other countries but not in Philippines.
A Cinema ticket in Philippines is worth about 140php to 170php(About $2 to $3)
Yet many Filipino Citizens buy Pirated Copies of Movies or watch them online.
Unfortunately, the problem is not caused by [a temporal] economic crisis - it is a permanent problem, because our swear word swear word politicians are swear word lame ducks! It doesn’t seem to get better.
As for Wall-e DVD - how much does it cost in the USA (the 3-disc bundle)? I have some friends there, so they can send me a package via mail, and I can transfer them money.
Or maybe there’ll be someone in the UK? it is closer than the USA.
it depend on your region, are you region 1 or 2?
also we don’t get the 3-disk.
I don’t know… I’m Region A (Abandoned). If only someone could send me… btw, why not 3-disc? I do not have bluray and my computer is too weak to play HD even if I buy a BD-rom. I have heard DVDs come in regular (1 disc) and special (3 disc bundle) editions. Or it is a 2-disc? All the stuff - the movie itself, the cut scenes, behind-the-scenes materials etc. What’s the price of that?
Actine- You can get the 2-disk special edition for £9.90 (about $20-ish?), not the Blu-ray one but the normal DVD. As WALL-E said, if you were to order from the UK, you wouldn’t be able to get the 3-disk, as we’re not getting it over here. If you did want the 3-disk, I think you’d have to order it from America.
so you live in Ukraine, which is in region 2.
The WALL·E DVD is £12.98 from Amazon
That is 117.136 UAH and then you would need to add postage on.
What’s the difference between 2-disc and 3-disc?
I thinkt he 3-disk includes moere shecial features and a resized version for portable devices.
It has the same amount of special features, the 3rd disc is just a digital copy.
oh, in that case you can rip it using the 2-disk version.
Then, the 2-disc would be ok.
Lizardgirl wrote that a 2dvd pack costs about £10, and WALL-E wrote that it costs £13 on Amazon. Why there’s so big difference? I have heard that Amazon got used to sell products cheaper than retailers.
Btw, is it possible to run a disc (legally!) bought in one country in another? There are some region boundaries, and America and Europe use different video types - NTSC and PAL.
Many DVD players can be hacked to play DVDs from all regions.
As for PAL/NTSC, it usually goes like this:
Players sold in NTSC-regions (e.g. the U.S. or Japan) usually only play NTSC.
Even if you hack them to be codefree, PAL discs still won’t play.
On the other hand, every PAL DVD player also plays NTSC discs, so after you hack those to be codefree, you are good to go.
A good place to look for hack instructions is http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks
totoro, if you had read the first message in this topic, you’d have understand that I already have a rip (768x288 pixels, 1.4Gb, Very High Quality, 5.1 Channel sound stream etc), and Wall-e is the first Movie I want to have a LEGAL copy of!
So edit your post quickly so that the moderators and the members won’t see the link and blame you for it
Actine- I literally just typed ‘WALL-E DVD’ into Google, and the first link that came up was selling the DVD at £10. I’d say the price will probably be from £10 up to even something like £18, depending where you order it from. Amazon is, generally, one of the cheaper places to order it from though, so £13 isn’t bad at all.
No need for that. Unlike circumventing copy protection, region-free hacks are perfectly legal in most countries.
lizardgirl, have you already bought it there? how much did it cost? 3£ actually makes the difference - this is two tickets to our cinema. If it is cheaper than from Amazon - may I ask you to do me a favour? No real estate investment, no saving poor Kenian princesses etc - a mail package and Western Union transaction.
Btw, what’s the quality of those DVDs? Dimensions of the movie? Sound channels number?
DVDs I assume would be standard PAL at 720x576, which is TV Dimensions, with 5.1 sound (but it’d play on 2.0 with a standard TV or PC)
HOWEVER the £13 includes the postage from amazon to us.
well, the 24th has passed, and I still don’t see the 2disc DVD pack for Region 2 at Amazon. When will it be available?
Then, I do not know how to use Amazon. I donot have any credital account. Can the item be paid when taking it at the post office? Then, there are some ‘New and Used’ section, where different dealers offer the same product for the lower price. What is that and should I trust that? I wanna a new disc, factory sealed, not scratched and not unpacked. I think that having the friends, who can send you the mail, worldwide is better. I live in Ukraine. Could anybody from UK buy and send me the discs? I’ll transfer the money, I pledge.
PS: What countries belong to the Disney’s Region 2
