The 2nd trailer shows us a [spoil]scary clown.[/spoil] I’m assuming this is one of Riley’s [spoil]nightmares.[/spoil]
Which could mean the villain might be one of her [spoil]nightmares personified.[/spoil].
And yes, it would be a bit predictable if [spoil]Bing Bong[/spoil] was the villain, as it’s been done before.
Meh, if Pixar was against doing twists they’d already done Lotso and Muntz wouldn’t exist, since they have the same twist as Waternoose, just with a few tweaks each.
Yeah, that does seem like the type of villain they like. Disney is doing the same thing lately, such as with King Candy and Hans, and same with Big Hero 6. I like that more Disney villains are gray though, they weren’t always known for that like Pixar.
What if the antagonist is among each other? I mean, each of the characters are drastically different, they are all opposing emotions, fighting over the controls. Even Joy herself has a level of arrogance I can pick up on when she says things like “as you can see, Riley’s memories are mostly happy - not to brag or anything.” When Joy and Sadness get separated from the control room, we are left with Anger, Fear and Disgust fighting over the controls - and I could only imagine that’s where most of the conflict will come in as these conflicted negative emotions are going to directly correlate with all the negativity in Riley’s life herself.
What I also gather from the trailer, is despite the characters having direct emotional roles, they will all delve into other emotions themselves - they will transform. For example, when Joy is staring into a sad orb, her emotion appears to be sad as well.
So with that said, my theory is perhaps there won’t be a direct antagonist, but rather the conflict will be provided by the emotions having entirely different perspectives on how Riley’s life shall be controlled, and ultimately the resolution of these conflicts will come with each emotion accepting each others differences and learning to work together.
[spoiler]Antagonist and Villian aren’t exactly the same concept.
An antagonist means well, but causes problems because they are misguided.
When they realise the mistakes they are making or are convinced they are wrong, they change their plan.
Whereas a Villian is out to do evil and cannot be dissuaded from their master plan.[/spoiler]
I guess we’ll have to wait and see if there is an actual villain or not.
I suspect if there is one, it’ll be kept so secret we won’t see it coming.
Probably to the extent that we haven’t seen them in the trailer or not in a significant appearance.
Which further reinforces my theory that [spoil]Bing Bong is the villain, because they’ve been mostly hidden so far.[/spoil]
Looks like a Spanish trailer has popped up! Hopefully a Japanese trailer follows since they also focus on the emotional core of the film.

^That was a very nice trailer!! Had we seen footage of [spoil]Baby/early childhood Riley[/spoil] before in other clips? Because I didn’t recognize any of those parts! How cool
If they’ve chosen a actor who plays a “shady” type, it further reinforces my impression that Bing Bong is a [spoil]villian,[/spoil]
As far as I know, the trailers prior to number 2 have never shown Riley other then her adult form.
I’ve only seen the english language versions though.
[spoil]If he does end up being the villain, I’m not sure I’ll be able to take him seriously, I have a hard time associating the voice with anything but Molt.[/spoil]
[spoil]Yep, the inept and hilarious type like Megamind. Or maybe he’s a red herring villain. It’s interesting that he hasn’t figured much into any of the trailers at all, though. Even Lotso came into the picture during a later trailer for TS3, even though he wasn’t in the first one. It makes me wonder what on earth they are hiding about Bing Bong.[/spoil]
[spoil]Was Muntz ever shown in the trailers for Up, though? I certainly don’t remember him being—they might be taking that kind of route with his character, trying to play up suspicion and curiosity about just who his character is before he appears in the movie.[/spoil]
In any case, I find it hard to take him seriously with the name Bing Bong
[spoiler]Muntz showed up in one of the trailers, near the very end, yelling and just generally making his villainy very clear.
Between Lotso and Muntz, the fact that Bing Bong’s actually managed to be kept fairly secretive might be a sign he isn’t a bad guy. The last time Pixar managed to successfully keep the marketing from showing the surprise villain was with Monsters, Inc. (Waternoose and Randall, surprisingly enough).[/spoiler]
[spoiler]Keep in mind that Bing Bong was Riley’s imaginary friend, so she probably created him when she was much younger, which is probably why his name and appearance are kind of silly.
But I wonder if he might be angry about being made so ludicrous, so if he’s angry at Riley, he might try to take revenge somehow.
Then again, like Villiainess proposed, he might just be a guest character and the true villain isn’t immediately apparent.
Sort of a red herring, they get us speculating so much about Bing Bong that we don’t really pay attention to the actual villian.
Given that there appears to be a population in other parts of Riley’s mind, it’s not improbable that one of them would be the villian.[/spoiler]
I’m so behind with updating but a Japanese trailer was released a few days ago that showed some interesting images of Riley. (Images courtesy of Pixar Post)
I find it funny that the movie is called Inside Head in Japanese. Joy’s voice is so much more deep and womanly in the dub! It was a really good trailer.
