John Carter

Those banners are cool

I saw the trailers on youtube. I am impressed. it’s not my kind of movie to watch, but it is really intense for a disney movie.

The scenes shown in the earlier trailer look more promising than the standard-fantasy-battle scenes shown in the more recent trailer. However, the cover of Led Zeppelin’s song Kashmir is humorously fitting–it would be great if that music appeared in the actual film.

Based on the comments by Stanton in web-posted interviews, it seems like he’s hedging his bets about how well the film will be received and is maybe out of his comfort zone. The second trailer gives the impression that it’s a mashup of Delgo, Mars Needs Moms, and 9
perhaps not the best of omens. Also, despite the name change away from Mars, John Carter is scheduled for the second Friday in March, as was Mars Needs Moms (and “March” in French is “mars”). If it’s true that the production budget is a quarter-billion bucks as indicated at IMDb, let’s hope that the planets are not aligned toward box-office disappointment.

there is a new imax one-sheet poster out there, which looks great

I also like the yellow letters better

I will admit I’m still trying not to see too much of the previews, but I got a bit jazzed when they started up with the instrumentals to Led Zeppelin’s ‘Kashmir.’

As well, the 4-armed creature that befriends John is starting to grow on me. I’m rather fascinated by the scene of him holding out first his upper arms, then his lower ones when he steps into the sun.

I like the use of Kashmir. It works

My cinema now has a rather large banner. Yay!

I love the yellow letters!

And what the Sam Hill are those monster things?

The title change will make Disney lose the Edgar Rice Burroughs audience. “John Carter” is almost as generic a name as “John Smith” or “Harry Potter.” But J.K. Rowling chose a generic for a reason. Fans of the Burroughs books won’t have any idea that John Carter is supposed to be from the Barsoom series.

Good job Disney. To save yourself one audience, you alienate another. We did not ask you to release Mars Needs Moms. And you knew it was bad anyway, yet you still released it. Why can’t you take a peg off Citizen Kane’s sled and remember what he said, “I lost a million dollars this year, and I expect to lose a million dollars next year! At this rate I’ll be broke in about
sixty years.”

So what if you spent $250 million making Mars Needs Moms? You did not have to release it. But you did anyway. And now you lost your Edgar Rice Burroughs audience because you think the word “Mars” will scare people away from your movie.

I am in rant mode now, and my rants are specifically aimed at Disney’s title trouble. If The Little Mermaid were coming out in 2012 instead of 1989, it would be called “Fin” because “boys don’t like mermaids.” Well, Disney is wrong. Many boys llove The Little Mermaid. Of course, they’re not going to retitle something that was already released, but seriously
and I don’t want to tell you what I think they would call the other princess movies if they released them today
they would all have one word titles because Disney thinks people can’t understand titles as long as “The Bear and the Bow.”

I guess you’re right in that changing some titles can be a bit absurd at times, but I personally wouldn’t go as far to say that calling the film John Carter is going to alienate the entire audience. And how could’ve Disney possibly have known that Mars Needs Moms was going to fail, or Treasure Planet for that matter? It’s concept wasn’t terrible, it’s execution simply was.

While I agree with the fact that the name change is awful, I wouldn’t go as far as to claim that the fans of the book won’t know the film is about that series.

John Carter alone is a very classic name and most people (specially fans, which is about whom you’re talking about) will recognize it.

I agree about the title thing. Sometimes a shorter, simple title works, but it seems like all titles of Disney (even Pixar) movies are becoming one-word things lately, and I find that a bit dull.

This international (Japanese) trailer depicts more of John Carter’s origin than earlier North American trailers:

It’s short, but Andrew is mention quite a bit

I’d like to put the Super Bowl ad out of my mind and just concentrate on this really awesome ad that aired during the premiere of The River today

A couple clips are now online

The first has John and Dejah encountering Warhoon

And the second (which is currently only available on Disney’s site) shows John’s first meeting with Woola, a Martian dog

On a semi-related note, I hope to do John Carter as a spoof for the cover and centrespread the March issue of my magazine (I work in a coupon advertising company). I’ve pitched the idea to my boss, but he’s a little reluctant cos’ he doesn’t keep up with the latest blockbusters (he likes ‘old-fart’ shows like Brady Bunch and Happy Days). Still gonna push for it though, I want to design it, and it would be excellent timing for the cinematic premiere.

So, will this become the official John Carter thread soon when the movie comes out and we discuss it? Just curious.

I’ve been perusing the early reviews, but I’m not sure what to think of them because I’m not familiar with the critics.

Oh, that’s so disappointing! I was anticipating such a thing, too, and I think the influence of the JCOM books will make some potential viewers disinterested because of the supposedly clichĂ© stuff. Even though I haven’t seen the film yet, I still wonder how a talented director like Stanton could have tried to make something more out of the film, seeing that it would inevitably be tossed aside as predictable and clichĂ© by at least some folks. I’m curious to see how he’s approached this issue, or if he did at all.

Yes, it should.

I changed the title of the thread to “John Carter” to reflect this.

I really want to see this. My dad loves the trailers.

My friend and I are so stoaked for this.
