Kung Fu Panda 2

Oh my God, indeed a long a gleeful post. I appreciate your opinions, and I agree with almost all of them! As for anyone shipping Po x Tigress, I don’t think it’s going to work.
In any case, I really enjoyed the scond one. This is a rare example of a sequel pwning its prede. Whoop if you think Shen was more badass than Tai Lung!

Oh yes, most defintely! Shen is crazy awesome.

Total 100% agreement. Shen was such a deep character and was my favorite part of the movie, not to mention he was voiced by Gary Oldman = win.

OH YESSS! Gary Oldman is one of my heroes! Sirius Black FTW…and forever.
I can’t believe that was him though. He sounded so different. Plus Shen has a cooler fighting ability than Tai Lung. And in much better shape.

I know this, and yet I still ship it. :B

Come on, it’s a tiger and a panda! Even in a fictional world it can’t be normal. Do you think Crane was jealous?

I dunno. I mean, Dreamworks has done romance between species before in Madagascar 2, so… :stuck_out_tongue:

Haha, this is awesome!

I changed the title of the thread cause it’s no longer called The Kaboom of Doom.

I always thought that most seemed to ship Crane with Mei Ling from the Secrets of The Furious Five stories DVD, so then shipping would be with a panda(po)/tiger(tigress) and a crane(crane)/mountain cat(mei ling), it’s all good

Crane had a relationship with a mountain cat?? I never knew. If so, then Tigress x Panda-- ship away!

In Secrets of The Furious Five I think they were just friends but I’ve seen some fanart around that pairs them together as more than friends.

Alright guys I totally saw this one just a short while ago and I freaking LOVED IT SO MUCH

I mean really it’s nearly as good as HTTYD and better than the first KFP! Dreamworks outdid themselves!

As you may know from my fan fiction concerning Donkey Kong I love thinking up dramatic backstories for the characters. It just so happens that [spoil]a lot of characters I like happen to be orphaned/adopted in my little fan continuity[/spoil] and [spoil]Po being adopted by Mr. Ping was a no-brainer really, but that reminded me so much of my own backstories and I loved it so much more because of that![/spoil] I simply adored how this sequel tied all the loose threads established in the first together, mostly by explaining [spoil]Po’s backstory and how he is (seemingly) the only panda[/spoil], what happened to him to have a duck as father, and how so much more of the already beautiful land was revealed.

And really, I am a sucker for any kind of love that isn’t just romance and there was so much of it in this movie. It made me all happy, honestly

Fan-banter aside, I adored the animation, it was top-notch, Lord Shen was an interesting villain, the humor was amusing as well and I totally cried [spoil]at the part where Po’s mother had to leave him behind when he was a baby D:[/spoil]. The ending left me smiling to myself.

Dreamworks, of all studios, made a great, serious yet heartwarming sequel. Miracles do exist.

But eh, Wikipedia?

You lied to me, I didn’t see no skunk! D:

Hey, look, guys! A ridiculously super long KFP 2 review!!

[spoiler]Even though I browse the forums almost every day, I rarely post anything. But after seeing this movie, I had to say something about it.

If anyone asked me what my favorite Dreamworks movie is, I would probably say Kung Fu Panda. Even if it wasn’t my favorite, it would definitely be in my top five from the studio. It was funny, charming, sweet, stunningly beautiful and artistic, and filled with great action. It also introduced us to Po, who may well be one of the greatest characters created in recent years. So naturally, I was a little nervous when the announced the sequel. And then announced the four additional sequels to follow. The words “overkill” and “money-grab” came to mind. Needless to say, I am SO glad to say that this movie put all of my fears to rest.

The shadow puppetry intro was BEAUTIFUL. And I absolutely loved that they kept the 2D animation and used in the same way as the first film—to illustrate what Po is seeing in his mind. At first I wasn’t too crazy about the Kung Fu Radish dream, but the more I thought about it the more it made sense to me; after all, haven’t we all had crazy dreams made up of things going on in our lives or things that we think about during the day?

I was very pleased with Po’s progression as a warrior—greatly improved, yet still a little clumsy and bumbling. His whole character arc in the movie was very convincing to me as well, and I loved how sorrowful and mournful he was after finding the truth, and then drawing strength from that revelation to make another stand in the end. And the way he deflected the cannonballs? EPIC.

Lord Shen was a great villain. I was definitely as skeptical as the rest of you when it was announced that he would be a peacock, but he just oozed with wickedness that made him so deliciously evil and great fun to watch. I would definitely put him on the same level as classic villains like Scar and Jafar. And the design was AMAZING. Kudos to Nicolas Marlett. His story and the way he tried to change his fate really reminded me of Oogway’s line from the first movie “One often meets his destiny on the road he takes to avoid it.” His relationship with the Soothsayer was both humorous and sad—you could tell she still cares about Shen and feels a lot of guilt for the way he turned out. She’s the Shifu of this movie.

It was nice to see the change in Tigress’s demeanor towards Po—she definitely respects him now, and it was nice to see their friendship strengthened. I would love to see their friendship blossom into romance (they’re definitely planting seeds for it!) but I hope it develops slowly. Not only does that fit their characters, but it would be a nice change from the standard romance where the characters get together in one movie. If they can develop that over the course of the KFP saga, I’ll be very happy. And I’ll be very curious to see if Tigress ever tells Po what she meant to say before the rest of the Five interrupted her on the boat, or the meaning behind the words “the hardcore do understand.” She’s still a very mysterious character, and I want to know more about her.

As for Po’s backstory…man, oh man. Heavy, heavy stuff. I saw this movie four times so far, and had cried every single time. It did remind me of Finding Nemo, which was the first movie I ever cried over, but KFP2 was definitely the sadder of the two. That’s right, I said it. We never actually see Coral give her life up, and even though it was heartbreaking to watch Marlin in the aftermath, this scene with Po’s mother felt more tragic to me. The way she holds her baby, tries to choke back tears, kisses him on the forehead one last time, and then bravely leads the wolves and Shen away from Po…it makes for a very powerful scene. There is nothing sadder or nobler than a parent sacrificing themselves for their child. And after studying the way Po looks, I realized he looks a lot like his mama. To quote Mantis, SO SAD.

Speaking of which, I think that baby Po is the most adorable thing I have ever seen. Move over, Boo. He was just so cute and fluffy, I could barely stand it. I really want a baby panda to snuggle now. And all of the scenes between him and his adopted father were very sweet and beautiful. I was tearing up during the last scene with those two as well.

AND THAT ENDING. Wow, what a cliffhanger!! I certainly wasn’t expecting that, and I can’t wait to see the outcome. It seems very quickly that the KFP franchise has established itself as being a saga of fathers and children, with the story arcs of Shifu and Tai Lung, Shifu and Tigress, Ping and Po, Po and his biological father, and maybe even Shifu and Po. I hope to see the loose ends of Tigress’s and Shifu’s problems and Tigress’s backstory wrapped up sometime in a future film since it wasn’t addressed at all in this one.

There were only two things I would change. First off, I didn’t particularly think the scene where Po was trying to convince Masters Ox and Croc to leave the jail was very funny, and I would have left it out and devoted more time to the Five because the really need more screentime. The Five (besides Tigress) have had zero development, and don’t get many lines (Mantis actually had some very funny ones in this movie). And secondly, I would not have revealed during the intro that Shen went after the panda community. Something the first film did very well was slowly revealing the story of Tai Lung, who he was, and what roles Shifu and Oogway played in his descent to darkness throughout the whole move. When we see the puppet pandas, it’s not that hard to figure out they were mostly likely massacred. From that point on, it’s kind of like you already know what happened and you’re just waiting for Po to catch up. If it were up to me, I would have just shown some red flames, or Shen and the wolves setting off wither their weapons or something, and left it more of a mystery to be slowly unraveled until the third act when we see the complete truth from Po’s memory. I think it would have been a stronger film for it. But regardless of these flaws, the movie is still amazing.

Oh yes, and the music was INCREDIBLE. It kept the same themes from the first one, improved upon them, and added more. I particularly loved Shen’s theme. John Powell and Hans Zimmer had better be getting some Oscar nominations for this score.[/spoiler]
Now for me, this is the make or break it point for the franchise. I think we can all agree that third movie is where Shrek went downhill. If KFP3 can match the humor, heart, action, and darkness (or hopefully, surpass) what was in this movie, then I say bring on Part 3, Dreamworks!!! A job well done on a movie deserving of Best Animated Feature for the Oscars next year!

NEVEER put all your faith in Wiki, mate. they just let you down.

Haha, it seems I have been misinformed by one of the Internet’s most trusted oracles! Though it would’ve been cool if James Woods was a Master Skunkman.

If you asked me on a personal level what was my favourite film of the year so far, it’d be a tie between Rio and Cars 2 (although Rio edges out a teeny bit). But if you asked me what was the best film of the year so far (that I have seen), it would be this, without a doubt. It is so much more cinematic and meaningful than half the tripe that came out this summer (although there are a few gems like Source Code, Deathly Hallows and the recent Rise of the Apes).

Ah, i miss Tom Felton,. Was he any good there?

Eh, he’s okay. I didn’t read the book, so I was surprised when [spoil]his character didn’t redeem himself when he had the chance to.[/spoil]. Have to say Alan Rickman’s Snape pretty much stole the show, although there’s that awkward Voldemort and Draco hug everyone’s been meem-ing about.

No I meant in Planet of the Apes. he was there right? I saw Deathly Hallows, he was good there. And he;s so nice in real life.

Well I kind of don’t fear that as much myself- with Shrek films it seemed to be more of a case of “We have no idea what to do for a film!”

“I know let’s hash together a half baked plot using the Shrek characters! They’re always good for a buck.”

KFP though seems to be planned- it does seem to be like there’s some plan going on for some longer saga perhaps or at least interesting directions to go in- [spoil]though the last scene with Po’s biological father was fairly obvious in this sense of something they’ll eventually have to look into in the future of course.[/spoil]

Granted there’s always the possibility it will tank, but yeah I’d have to say I’d definitly have more confidence in KFP 3 than if say they announced Shrek 5.

KFP 2 definitly seemed like a labour of love and it seemed like they really cared for the story they were trying to tell.

Plus of course Shrek’s villians are just terrible in comparison to KFP’s- even in the first two Shrek’s we have to admit, those villians weren’t always the best- the Fairy Godmother was threatening (and Prince Charming at times amusing) but she still kind of pales in comparison. They’re almost charicatures really. And Farquad never felt like a real character or person to me at all.
