Logging in

I am experiencing the same issue with Internet Explorer in that I can’t log onto the Pixar Planet forums via that particular server. (I am using my dad’s computer to post messages at the moment.) I would use Firefox, only I don’t have the heart to install any more programs on the family computer than needs to be integrated into the system.

Mitch, your decision is your decision, and I can’t force you (unless of course I hunt you down, but I wouldn’t do that would I…or would I :stuck_out_tongue:), but your computer would probably thank you if you installed Firefox. Internet Explorer is like a bad hypothesis: it tries to make the facts fit the hypothesis. By that I mean it tries to change web developer’s to get the internet to work in IE and not the other way around. WD’s are getting fed up and a lot don’t design for IE anymore, they just make sure their website is compliant with the W3C’s standards.

Mitch, just make the switch. You won’t regret it. And you get to have cool add-ons such as Upcoming Pixar’s RSS feed.

bawpcwpn and rachel - Hmm… Ah, fine, I’ll take a look at this Firefox thing-a-ma-hig. You fools better be right about this. (snigger)

As for hunting me down: I’ve got a lightsaber… :stuck_out_tongue:

By the way, what is an RSS feed, if I may ask?

– Mitch

RSS my friend, stands for Really Simple Syndication. Let’s take a blog for example, whenever someone makes a post, their RSS feed is updated, and if you subscribe to that RSS feed, you are notified that the post is there. It also shows if a post has been updated. You can change settings to only allow, say, the first 200 words of a post, or just the title, however with my blog, you can read the whole post without having to visit the site.

There are RSS Aggregators such as Google Reader (Web based) or NetNewsWire (Desktop Based (My reader of choice)) which allow you to keep track of all your RSS feeds. It’s how I stay on top of all the exciting Pixar, movie, and other news. Quite a marvelous invention.

Ahh, yes, and then all you have to do is log in again and poof! you’re back to posting…

Except I (I can’t believe this happened) couldn’t remember my password for the life of me. Did you know that after 5 tries, you’re locked out of the forums for 30 minutes? That happened to me twice. I finally had to IM PV and ask her help… PV, once again, you are the best!

I try.

~~=oP

What kind of bad web developers do you know, bawpcwpn? Internet Explorer is the bane of my existence, but about 50% of users are on IE6 or 7 (seriously – there are statistics!), so you really have to go out of your way to accomodate for it or else risk isolating half of your audience.
It’s still very problematic, though. It’s not built to the same standards as the other browsers, which – aside from problems that causes developers – makes it less secure to use. Firefox is by far the best! Thirty-six per cent of internet users say so! (Statistics again!)

bawpcwpn - Ahh, I see. How interesting! Thank you for the information.

That proves nothing. :stuck_out_tongue:

– Mitch

And the reason behind the 50% is because Grandma and Grandpa and the other average computer users who don’t know any better, when they buy their computer, it’s probably the dreaded PC and since Microsoft has the largest market share, well it’s that damn, awful Windows on the computer (Grandma and Grandpa and the average computer users don’t even really know the difference between OS X/Linux/Windows. What’s an Operating System i hear them ask all the time when I try to explain the difference. What a sad world we live in.) and Internet Explorer comes pre-installed and it’s there on their desktop and it has internet in it and voila! They can use the internet. None the wiser that they have a choice when it comes to browsers and the benefits of other browsers. I bet you even mention the word “browser” to the average computer user and they’ll ask what that is too.

Dell is taking a step in the right direction towards allowing users to choose if they want Linux on their computer and are installing FF as the default browser too. When it comes down to the whole market share of Windows vs. Macs and Linux though, Windows did bring the personal computer to masses in the 90’s. Apple did in the 80’s. However now, Mac’s are better again. i grew up on a PC, and find Mac’s to be 10x better. Such sleek and wonderful machines. I had the choice, and I switched. It’s such a joy not to have virus protection installed and not have to worry about spyware and malware and the other stuff that infects Windows computers so very easily.

That’s my rant

I consider myself officially insulted. I didn’t even know what a browser was until I looked it up on Wikipedia just now. Cut me some slack, man! I was born in the 80s. :stuck_out_tongue:

– Mitch

I wouldn’t really say that being an average computer user is insulting  I guess you become like me if you are a techie geek and use your computer a lot

Anyway, we mustn’t stray too far from the topic at hand. Have most people’s problems with logging in been fixed?

Yeah, I’m more of a PC person in that I spent a good portion of my childhood learning about their evil ways before Macs came onto the scene. Nowadays, I’m still discovering the inner workings of my dad’s Mac computer. Only recently did I figure out how to change the desktop backround.

But yeah, back on-topic… (snigger)

– Mitch

Haha, I know it’s rubbish – but you still need to accomodate them. It’s not just older people, it’s people who don’t know the technical side of computers and so stick to their default settings, which is a great majority, really. And from a developer point of view, most clients who come to us to build their website don’t know the first thing about the internet, never mind different browsers. A lot of our clients are still on Internet Explorer 6, and as far as they’re concerned, if it doesn’t look right on their screen, then it won’t look right on anyone’s.

I think the logging in problems were fixed, actually. Or else, we could rename it the ‘Logging In/Browser Rant’ and it would be entirely on-topic. ;-p

Mitch- “I got hugs for you if you were born in the '80s, the '80s…”

I’m sorry, that was about as off topic as you can get. Uhm…I’m pleased that the logging in problems have been solved!

Mell ‘Of course I have a secret identity’ O Drama - Ahh – I see. Well, that’s how it goes, I suppose. 'Tis a shame that most people don’t realise that default settings date back to the time of the dinosaurs, but not everyone out there is a computer geek or technical genious. I guess I qualify as your first class doup, seeing as I know next to nothing that is technologically complex. I’ll take a pencil over a mouse any day. :stuck_out_tongue:

lizardgirl - Gee whiz. They have a song on it, as well? Who wrote that? (snigger)

Getting back onto the main topic, I’m also pleased that most users’ problems have been solved! It seems as if this thread is wandering off the road, however. I betcha it’s gonna be locked sooner or later. (heheh)

– Mitch

Mitch- One last off topic comment (I’m not usually this bad!) - that song is by Calvin Harris and it is awesome. nods

If I write the words, ‘logging in’ in this post, does that make it on topic? :stuck_out_tongue:

I have to agree with bawpcwpn Macs are amazing! They’re sleek, fast, and safe. I can’t believe Macs load in literaly 2 seconds while PCs take a few minutes. The best part is the added feats. like GarageBand, iDVD, Photobooth, Motion etc. And it can even run some Windows applications such as Microsoft Office.
Anyways, I’m still getting used to IE7 so can someone help me delete my Pixar Planet cookies JIC?
Thanks.

Thanks, bawpcwpn!
That’s good to know.
