Michael Giacchino

Michael is awesome! All of his compositions just make my mind soar! He’s such a brilliant man!

I posted this in the Up Tempo thread, but in case anyone missed it and is interested…

For those of you in the LA area who want to meet Michael in person, it looks like he’ll be doing an autograph event at the West Hollywood Best Buy store on May 5th at 7:00pm for the release of the Star Trek CD. Details are on the Varese Sarabande website:

Michael is an astounding composer, his soundtracks have a feel of excitement and awe to them that cannot be matched. My favorite track of his is 1000 Yard Dash from the Incredibles.

While I am most certainly looking foward to his score for UP his score for the new Star Trek film is sure to drop jaws when it hits next week. You can hear the immense score in the trailer.

There’s an article on Michael Giacchino in his old hometown newspaper (kind of a “local boy makes good” story) that talks about him composing and growing up in New Jersey, for anyone interested:

Courier Post Online

Edited. I shorted the link so as it’s not as extensive. – Mitch

It’s interesting how Michael studied at Juilliard, not in music, but in film! Maybe that is a pre-requisite to composing music for film…? I haven’t seen Star Trek (yet) but am planning to see it at the cinemas and listening to the score, especially since he talked about the unique instruments in that article. Did anyone get to the CD signing a few weeks back?

Thanks for the article, miafka! =)

miafka - Thanks for that! It’s really nice to get to read an interview that talked about paths to their success. All the more trust with him in the Up Soundtrack.

Did anyone get to the CD signing a few weeks back?
No, but here’s a picture of it, from someone selling signed CDs on the net:

Actually, I think he studied music at Juilliard, and film at the School of Visual Arts (according to his Wiki).

Well, we just finished scoring Land of the Lost today, so now he gets a little break.

Interestingly, Michael has 3 movies coming out within a month of each other, competiting against each other (Star Trek - May 8, Up - May 29, and Land of the Lost - June 5th).

He’s a busy man!

Good for him! I’m still super excited for the Up score, have listened to the Star Trek score and I like it.

Did anyone els notice the music that played in the new clip that has been released? It was so beautiful and fit so well with the whole scene! Gave me goosebumps !

Simon-Simon: I can’t wait to hear Kevin’s theme, seeing as how she’s becoming my fave character from the trailers and clips.

Anyway, I’m just here to say: “Mr G’s soundtrack for Star Trek is bey-awesome! Go see it now!”

Congrats Mr G. You have won a loyal fanboy over to your cause of wicked cool music.

I was at the movies (we were seeing Star Trek) and I noticed on the Land of the Lost preview that he was doing the score, now it’s another on my list of movies to see.

I didn’t know that he did the Star Trek score, so when we were watching the credits and it said “Music Composed By” and his name popped up, my friends missed my moment of geekness when I said: “Whoo~!” They did hear me though.

Later they asked me what I was ‘whoo’-ing about, and I couldn’t pronounce his last name D/

Jzah-Key-No

Oh wow. I was totally off with my guess…

thanks for the correction Rachel

Very much appreciated!

Or “Jee-ah-kee-noh”.

My friends and I were lingering at the theatre exit doors after Star Trek watching for any of those post-credits secret scenes (there was none) when Mr G’s name popped up. I knew he was the composer beforehand, but I casually feigned surprise in front of my mates:

“Oh! It’s Mr Jeeahkeenoh!”
“Wut? Who?”
“You know, that guy… (pretend pause, although knows by heart) you know… who did the score for Incredibles? Mission Impossible 3?”
“Oh, really?”
“Cha know he’s doing Up?”
“Huh? Up?”
“You know… that Pixar movie?”
“Oh, the flying house movie. With the old guy in it.”
“Yeah, yeah, yeah!”
“Huh. Wow, I didn’t know that…”
“Yup…”

That’s pretty much my friends response.

“Yeah, he did Ratatouille and the Incredibles soundtrack!”
“You know, the Pixar movies? He’s also doing UP.”
“Ohh…”

Most of them want to go see UP, and knew excatly what I was talking about when I mentioned UP. Many won’t speak to me anymore because I’m seeing it this Thursday  So I won’t be able to talk to them until the week of exams x)

I just tell my friends “stay in the credits and listen”

Nuh-uh. The way I pronounce it is the way Michael’s family themselves pronounces their surname… Don’t ask how I know that. :stuck_out_tongue:

… Bah-ha-ha! 8D Trying to conceil your nerdiness in front of your friends, I love it. wipes tear from eye Oh mercy. Just the way you wrote that dialogue out, lol.

Aw, why can’t they join you, thewisecookiesheet? :frowning:

Ha-ha! You KNOW that’s how I do not say “Giacchino”. Come on, my accent’s not that broad. 8D

Because we were only allowed two tickets, so me and my mom went.

So, while I’ve had my hand over my mouth for the past few days, my friends have had their fingers in their ears :stuck_out_tongue:

There’s a great article on Michael Giacchino in today’s LA Times. Covers everything from Star Trek to Up to Land of the Lost to Up, even mentions 1906.
