Okay, guys, have you ever watched one of the Pixar movies or shorts and completely misinterpreted - even for a moment - a line, an action, or anything else in the movie one way or another?
For example - I can’t remember any misconceptions I’ve had at the moment - but I I remember my dad telling him that when Gill says “I’m thinkin’ tonight we give the kid a proper reception”, he thought the Tank Gang was going to fry Nemo or something. I was like “What?!”
So I think it’d be funny to see what kind of misconceptions anyone else remembers having - there are some funny ones out there.
Oh, I never thought o fGill’s statement, CGI. Sorry, but that’s hilarious.
Lemme think…well, I used to wonder about Dory’s name in Finding Nemo. If she has short-term memory loss, then how can we be sure that her real name is Dory? But she keeps bringing it up, so it probably is…right?
I can’t remember any of my misconceptions, but what often happens to me is I watch an old childhood film and suddenly get some of the references, not just the ones that are adult humor. Also, I understand them more - if I didn’t understand a certain word a character said it always seemed to remain some garbled up nonsense word in my head.
FONY - Ha, I did that alot when I was a kid! But know that I’m older I’ll go back and watch old movies and catch on to things that I previously never understood. Kinda like someone turning on a lightbulb in my head - “OH, that’s what they meant!” Nice to grow up.
One ridiculous misconception I had was when I first watched “A Bug’s Life”, and Mr. Soil and Dr. Flora were talking right after the twig incident, Mr Soil made a comment - “I think she has enough on her plate already…training her daughter.” For years, I thought the ant said “trading her daughter.” That just threw off my entire view of the movie for a very long time!
I never understood it when Mr. Potato Head took his nose off and prodded his own backside with it. I don’t think I’d heard of the phrase ‘brown-noser’ when I first saw Toy Story, but I finally get the joke now.
CGI Clownfish- Quite possibly. I honestly can’t remember- it must be at least a year since I last saw Toy Story. Either way, I didn’t get the joke at first.
I had a misconception on Toy Story. At the end, after the moving van scene, Woody say’s “Hey isn’t that mistletoe?”, and then Bo Peep jumps on him and the camera pans up to the mistletoe.
Then, when Woody hops up onto the bed next to Buzz, he has a bunch of lipstick/kiss marks all over his face. And, seeing how I was young, and didn’t understand the mistletoe part I didn’t understand that they were kiss marks.
So, I assumed they were scars from the adventure, you know getting back to the house (even though throughout that entire scene, you never see a single scratch on him).
When I watched it after a long while when I was older, I immediately got it and felt like an idiot. I told my brother and he burst out luaghing. : )
Falling With Style - Isn’t that the way it always goes? You’re young and naive, then along comes these big words or scenes you don’t understand. Thus, you gain a misconception, and that throws off the film. It’s so nice to grow and understand and…where are my manners!?!

Hi, thanks for welcoming me here. I’ve been a Pixar fan since I first saw Toy Story (which is still my favourite) and I just love their films.
The only one I’m not to big on is the Incredibles, It was made extremely well, great animation, voice-acting and all that. But, I’m just not into superheroes, fighting and that kind of stuff.
I’ve been looking at this site for a while and reading through some of the forums, and when I read this one I thought I’d finally contribute.
When I first saw Monsters, Inc, I didn’t understand Randall’s plans. I thought that whole time he was only cheating, and the Scream Extracter was a giant voice recorder/amplifier that recorded screams and “cloned” them.
When I first saw Celia, I thought that she had many heads. (Are the snakes like her pets as well as her hair?)
But one thing I never got was: what was that green field of light during the “kid-tastrophe”?
bright dot-dasher- Yeah, I know what you mean about Celia’s hair. I always thought of the snakes as being both her hair and her friends, in a way.
As for the green field of light, I assume you’re referring to just after Mike and Celia’s date in Harryhausen’s, when there’s a big panic about the child? If so, the green field of light was used to vaporise the entire restaurant to smithereens- you can just see this happening in the background during the news report, if I remember correctly.
I had another misconception. In The Incredibles, Syndrome says the line, “When everyone’s super-evil laugh- no one will be.” For a long time, I thought he meant that once everyone was a superhero, he’d kill them off, too.
I also got confused in a scene in Ratatouille, though. When Linguini was in front of the press, Remy was getting angry because he didn’t get any credit. But why would he feel so angry about that if he wanted to stay hidden anyway? If Linguini did otherwise and showed Remy to the press, things would get worse, right?
But she keeps bringing it up, so it probably is…right?
