Mitch's Compositions

I see you’re more of an “object/prop artist”. Great job!

My only critique would be to add a little more contrast to it between shading to give it a definite light source…

Pixfan - Actually, I’m not much one for composing such things as solid objects. As a matter of fact, I rather hate it (at times), to tell you the truth.

Haha. Yes, that’s what my teacher stated, as well.

Thank you for the critique!

Mitch: Heh, I getcha. Like myself sometimes the things you happen to be good at don’t always happen to be something you enjoy. I’m with ya there. The skill will come in handy when you need it though…

I’ll take that as a plus for me then, seeing that the ability to notice flaws in my work will only make me better…:-D)

Really excellent work Mitch! Absolutely amazing! It looks Incredible!

Pixfan - Haha! Yeah, that always happens: The stuff that you’re not particularly fond of is the one that everybody else in the universe likes. It’s insane, I tell ya’. :stuck_out_tongue:

Cha, take it as a compliment! (snigger)

Vim (Elvis Lives!) and The Star Swordsman - Thank you very much, dudes!

Edit: I recently completed this little composition of Koda, one of the star characters from the Disney film Brother Bear:

The entire piece took me approxiamately two hours to complete, including drawing the image (which wasn’t too difficult) to enhancing the picture in Photoshop CS2 (which took two thousand years).

I hope the friend I drew it for likes it!

Awww Mitch, the bear looks aboslutely amazing! Koda looks really cute. You are really talented. Nice work!

Mitch- Firstly, that chair looks great! Good perspective and use of shading, though as the others have said, a little more contrast would add to it.

And that Brother Bear pic is awesome! Perfect lineart and good use of colours! Some of the darker lines of shading across his arms and face look a little out of place, but you’ve done really well on this! I love the big smile on his face.

The Star Swordsman - Thank you very much.

lizardgirl - Much obliged!

I conjured up a popular image of Koda (via the internet) for reference as far as the overall design and colors went. As for the “dark marks”, they were rather unavoidable at this stage seeing that I’m not as adept at Photoshop as some other geeks out there are. If you zoomed up to the image really closely, you’d see that it is an absolute mess – there’s brown speckles everywhere. Heck, part of the reason why it took me an extra hour or two to compose was because I was trying to find just the right colors to use to make it blend in. Frustration came upon me a healthy amount of times. I’m glad that one can’t see all of the mistakes from a distance, though. (snigger)

Again, thank you for the critique and compliments!

Mitch, you’re welcome.

Although I have been rather absent as of late, this doesn’t mean that I have been neglecting my pencils…

Various Compositions - Rat Sketches and Meerkat Entry:

Anatomy Studies:

Facial Study - Varying Character Profiles in Same Pose:

Meerkat Manor Member - Rocket Dog:

There is only one rat sketch that I favor above all the others displayed (of the ones that I created), and that is the little rat in the second batch of sketches who is placed in a sitting position (bottom left-hand corner). He seems to have a definite weight and solidity to him, though this was integrated into the charater purely by accident. I’m not exactly sure how I achieved this fairly diminuative, yet important, “feat” either, but I’m just glad that I got a sense of weight down on the paper. :stuck_out_tongue:

The third batch of rat sketches are actually drawings that one of the animators at Pixar Animation Studios did, and they can be found on the official Ratatouille video game for PlayStation, PC, Xbox, and other platforms. All of the credit goes to the animator; I just copied the things.

As for that last sketch: “Rocket Dog” was a member of the Starsky family (on the Animal Planet show, Meerkat Manor) who recently passed away after suffering from malnourishment and a lack of an adequate heat source. Ironically, I drew her in a panicky state just a week or two before she lost her life. (The credit should actually go to my sister for the idea for the pose.) Rather sad really…

In any case, my main goal is to discover and learn how to draw various characters in different stances and poses and with dissimilar profiles. I’ve also chosen to not draw any more rats unless I draw them in a completely different position than I’ve been drawing them in recently. Shocking, I know…

As always, advanced critique is greatly appreciated.

Oh, and two last thiings:

 • Please ignore that little cat drawing in the corner of the third batch of drawings. :stuck_out_tongue:
 • If anybody else feels like that little girl rat in the fourth batch of sketches looks like Minnie Mouse, please let me know. (snigger)

That’s all folks!

Those are a lot of pictures Mitch! Really excellent work on all of them!

Some very nice sketches there, Mitch! Some are particularly good- I really love the expression in that last one- and you’ve definitely improved with practice!

Heheh. Thank you, guys!

– Mitch

Wow, those are all really cool! (That’s all I can say because I’m horrrrrrible at drawing. Even my stick figures suck, so my critique would be quite uneducated and useless… and probably wrong.) I especially like the rat sketches. Most excellent.

Colette Linguini - Thank you very much, dude!

Aww – that’s all right. We all have our own special talents. Remember what Gusteau said, though? “Anyone can cook!” That applies to drawing, too…

You are welcome Mitch.

Yvette - My Fursona:

Although I only composed approxiamately one drawing of her in a couple of minutes, I am, overall, quite satisfied with how this particular version of myself as a rat turned out. (Yeah, that’s probably what I would look like in a…“rodential format”. Eheheh.)

The name “Yvette” is actually French and carries the meaning “archer’s bow”. Coincidentally, I love archery and did not want to use my real name for the character (due to…umm…“personal identification” reasons), so it all makes perfect sense! Heheh.
