I think that different ages/groups will have different opinions on DreamWorks’ movies, just like Pixar’s. And that’s fine. I, personally, like both of the studio’s films, although I do find Pixar, naturally, more consistent for quality.
I definitely liked Kung Fu Panda better than Bee Movie, but when watching for some pass-the-time entertainment, I don’t worry about the logistics of inter-species relationships…
As for Monsters Vs. Aliens, I am planning on seeing it. I am sure that it will be fun in 3-D, to say the least.
Bee Movie was strange. Just when you think it’s over, there’s one random plot point after another. Not to mention the climax was extremely lame. The writing was alright though.
I wasn’t saying you in particular, I was just trying to make the point that different ages, or groups, of people like things on different levels. And the group of people that like Bee Movie, generally like it for Jerry Seinfeld. It did have some funny moments in it, I will admit.
I thought Bee Movie was funny but ultimately mediocre and the climax, disappointing. Some parts are even disturbing like the inter-species romance aspect (which ended up feeling contrived instead of cute like in Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa) and the “race card” quote by the lawyer in the toddler roller. Not to mention that they used the same city-nature hybrid like Shark Tale which ended up creepy instead of A Bug’s Life or Finding Nemo’s ‘naturalistic’ approach. Good effort, but not great.
And the Mirage/Susan (the “giant girl”) resemblance is uncanny. Maybe they’re twins?
Anyway, the marketing folks at DreamWorks have released a brand-new music video! I’m not really impressed by the fact that they used another teenybopper band like the Naked Brothers, but hey, target demographic is the pre-teen crowd, so I guess they made the right choice. The song’s quite catchy. Look out for Blob acting as the ‘bouncing ball’ over the karaoke lyrics.
And as user webkinzfav pointed out, 0:09 in particular is hilarious because of Susan’s ‘horror’ pose and her weird “UGH!” scream when the meteor strikes her. That bit was so funny I burst out laughing when I noticed it and proceeded to watch it over and over again. I’m still cracking up as I’m typing this.
WHAM! “UGH!”
WHAM! “UGH!”
WHAM! “UGH!”
Other funny parts are 0:22, 0:28, and 0:42. Watch at the link below.
That’s OK. I was just being general, and probably wasn’t very clear, since I had written age/groups, when I had meant different ages, or different groups, etc., so basically, no one in particular!
Sorry about that, I’ll try to write things clearer in the future.
Oh my gosh! Somebody else who is willing to give DreamWorks the benefit of the doubt after KFP! I am not alone!
Yeah… I’m not sure what I think of MVA, but the plot looks like it could be neat, I’m interested to see some of the epic 3D that’s been talked about, and I don’t wanna kick myself yet again for missing what could be a very good film cause it DreamWorks (missing KFP on the big screen was just… darnit, self.)
So yeah, I’m going next weekend. xD
Now, hold on. Marketing is done by the company, not the creators first off. Two different areas.
I mean, if we say “it won’t be good because of all the junk they’re selling for it,” then we have to look at WALL-E, which while not in the form of sugary chocolaty whole grain whatever (but I kinda wish it was…) has HUNDREDS of different products out there. Clothes, toys, books, school supplies, dishware, towels, etc etc. And don’t even get me started on Cars if we’re gonna talk about marketing vs. creative department. Or Toy Story, for that matter. Actually, we DO see Nemo and Cars on cereal boxes with those little Disney plush toys they’ve been giving out.
Nothing against if you’re not interested in the movie, heck I only recently decided I wanted to go, but saying it’s because the marketing is high isn’t looking at how the department’s work. It’s a pretty common misconception. While maybe the creative folks have some power over what goes into the market, they are not in charge of marketing at all.
I agree with Netbug! A common fallacy critics of WALL-E point out is that the anti-consumerism message is in conflict with its real-life marketing tactics, rendering it hypocritical. I counter that by saying that the creators of the film have nothing to do with the marketing people, they’re two separate entities.
I do notice that DreamWorks films are more merchandise-friendly though, and that their marketing execs push their products more heavily than Pixar (only Cars seems to match their merchandise saturation level).
No one’s commented on the link I posted to their music video?
Oh, and I’m pretty interested to give this film a chance, though I doubt it’ll blow me away, and this is my least-anticipated animated film this year.
Anyway, I watched the music video. It has it’s funny parts, I will admit! I am looking forward to seeing this movie. I don’t think it will be as good as Kung Fu Panda, but I’m sure that it will be a lot of fun.
I just got the Monsters Vs. Aliens junior novel from the library. The main reason I got it was because I knew it had pictures from the film in it. I ended up spoiling myself just a little. All I will say is that I’m now have higher hopes for this! Also, I will predict that it will be about as good as Kung Fu Panda.
Just after DreamWorks earned some respect from me with KFP, they had to come out with this. Of course, I can’t say whether or not the movie’s bad until I actually see it, but the trailer really did not impress me.
I’ve been predicting a lot on how this film will be which is probably pretty annoying. But you guessed it! I’m changeing my mind. I’m just going to stop predicting and wait for the actual film to come out.
Yup, as I always advocate, never judge a film until you’ve seen it. But geez, speculating is just too much fun!
If you guys haven’t seen it already, here’s the Director’s First Look Featurette. It’s interesting to hear the director’s thoughts on the film and gain a peek into the studio’s environment (mostly darkly-lit and less eccentric than Pixar), and the kind of technology they use (mostly HP computers and a nifty-looking virtual camera at 1:40).
I laughed at the face BOB pulled at 1:15.
The revamped website also has a monster creator (but annoyingly, you’ll have to download a third-party application first), and some sound-bites and video-clips not shown in the trailer. Some of them are kinda funny, and are not really spoiler-ish.
I’m surprised I didn’t mention it before - I’m actually thinking of seeing this one in theaters (but not in 3D if I can help it - it tends to give me headaches). Reese Witherspoon’s character (Susan aka Ginormica) is from my hometown (Modesto, CA)! If you watch the superbowl trailer, you can see a screen that’s tracking the meteorite directly to Modesto. (I’m wondering if they picked the city because of the fact that god of the nerds George Lucas grew up here… who knows.)
Oh, and also because it seems to be a parody of 1950s monster B-Movies (Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, the Mothra/Godzilla movies, Creature from the Black Lagoon), and I love both 1950s monster B-movies and parodies. And it has Hugh Laurie, whom I also love.
KE - I didn’t know Mr. Lucas was from Modesto! I also like parodies in general, so this looks pretty intriguing. Oh, and Hugh Laurie is God (well, at least as House). In this case, though, he’s a cockroach. Half.
I’m going for a free advanced screening as part of my movie review assignment as a “student contributor” for my university’s student-run magazine. Needless to say, I get to watch it before even the US general release (It’s on next Monday, before the official bow for US on Thursday, and Australia the week after) and see my name under the review in copies around campus. Provided, of course, I write a good enough piece and I don’t suck.
You can read more about it in the “Good Things That Happened to You Lately” thread.
I’m not surprised that you didn’t know Lucas grew up here - Modesto’s a small town, and unless you read, like, his entire life story, he doesn’t mention Modesto much… that, and we tend to be known for three high-profile murder cases (all between 1999 and 2003) more than anything else.
Does anyone know if there will be a How to Train Your Dragon teaser attached to this, or is it already on the Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa DVD? If you know the answear plese tell me through this.
I HATE the “evil aliens” stereotype! It’s always, “Invasion” this and, “OH MY GOD, ALIENS! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!” that! When (and if) I make a movie, it will be about GOOD aliens who save Earth from a race of aliens who wish to conquer Earth, called The Reptilioids (rep-til-e-oyds). In fact, view the “Other Animation” section of the forums. Look for the poll “My Movie Ideas” and vote. A small description of the movie (which I dubbed Allen the Alien, after the main character) is in my first post there.
