YouAreAToy: I like that movie too, and I agree. It’s nice to watch a movie without crude jokes and pop culture refrences, it makes the movie timeless. I think you meant to post in the ‘underrated movies thread’ not the ‘overrated thread’.
well heres the thing incredi girl and i am not dogging on u in any way but dont u think after 11 years of anticipation waiting for some of america’s most beloved characters to return to screen and its finally announced isnt it kinda obvious that right when the movie is announced it will automatically be overrated i think if people have been waiting for some thing for 11 years and its finally released no matter what it is people are gonna go baserk so toy story 3 may be overrated but its because it was a huge 11 year gap and people love these characters.you get what im saying?
Whoa! Are half of these movies still overrated? I never hear anyone rave about Shrek 2 anymore. Titanic is slowly starting to be the movie where most geeks agree Cameron lost his touch. Outside of TDIT I cannot find a single person who loves Avatar. They are usually in the “I enjoyed it but…” category. I didn’t know people actually love Ice Age 3 that much. Despicable Me has frequently been called a fantastic effort but overly derivative. And last but not least Twilight is thought to be kinda awful even by rabid fans who mostly flock to see the films simply because they’re the only adaptations they’re ever likely to get. Sure they’ve swept a couple of award shows but only shows no self-respecting person would take seriously.
I’m right with you when it comes to the Hangover though. I guess I liked it? But most of the film I was waiting for the funny stuff to happen. I must’ve seen the cut where they removed the majority of the comedy. Don’t even get me started on the double standard of the cast and crew rejecting a loudmouth racist but agreeing to work with a convicted wife-beating rapist twice!
Now for my opinions on Avatar. I enjoyed it but…
The lead had the charisma of wrapping paper. He was out-acted by Michelle Rodriguez, and that’s really saying something. I’m tired of the “indigenous population can’t figure things out for themselves and need some random white guy to change all the rules and do the stuff they’ve been doing for thousands of years better than ever did” trope. I’m also tired of the Noble/Magical Savage trope. There’s also the most humans are jerks trope.
Not to mention that most of the movie could’ve been outright avoided if A) the company would’ve mined the floating mountains. Before anyone correct me on the proper concentration of unobtainum in the rocks I counter with “refining process” or B) Jake Sulley would’ve done his gotdang job in the first place instead of trying to play top dog and get the girl. Yeah it wouldn’t have been that easy, and they probably wouldn’t have left right away. But a warning a few days earlier, which he was supposed to do anyway, would’ve spared hundreds if not thousands of lives.
I put it in the list, because outside the USA, people around the world (exept Japan, they sometimes have a good taste in films) love that movie, it is insane to realize how much money ice age 3 made, don’t wanna imagine how will the part 4 perform, hoping to see this franquise resting in peace like shrek is supposed to be doing
I am not saying that those movies are bad, some of them are just good and enjoyable, however what bothers me is that people think that those are the biggest achievements in recent years
Avatar is just good, you know where the main plot come from, but a perfect popcorn film
HTTYD is pure heart but completely overrrated, it does not make it the best animated film of the year
Despicable Me, shrek 2 and Ice Age 3 just focus on jokes (for ex: people outside the USA see Scratch from Ice age and think that it is the cuttest thing out there, wtf, sadly the same is happening with the Minions)
Hangover, is ok, but not the funniest comedy EVER, however I’ll be watching the sequel
Twilight, no words
Does anyone else find it a bit depressing how big this thread has gotten? It’s such a bummer that most of us are better at articulating negative opinions than positive ones.
I may be shot, but one of the most overrated film franchise imo is the Pirates Of The Carribean films. I remember watching either the 2nd or 3rd one in the cinema when I was about 13 or 14 and feeling rigid with boredem and uncomfort, because they go on for agggeeesss, and they’re really rather uninteresting imo, although Orlando Bloom is quite dishy.
But, I see people at college with POTC folders, pens, “I love Jack Sparrow” bagdes, bags…ughh!
And “overrated” and “bad” are different things. PIXAR films are overrated; all of them, but they’re still favourites. It’s just that lots and lots and lots and lots of people like them aswell, when, as films they aren’t perfect.
I will agree that the first POTC was vastly overrated at the time of its release. But currently, and even during the release of the last two films, they seemed to be rated just about right. Dead Man’s Chest is thought by many to have been bloated and overlong and lacking the charm of the original film. World’s End was thought to be even more so and a waste of fantastic location, situations and opportunities.
Now that many are looking at the next couple of films with much trepidation, either as being the ones that redeem the franchise or the ones that drag it down (further of for the first time depending on who you ask), it’s fair enough to say that the franchise has lost its luster in all but money-making ability.
I’m putting forth V for Vendetta. It’s a decent film but it sort of misses the point of its source material. And most of its fan seem to miss the point of the adaptation as well.
By far the worst thing about the success of this film is the rising popularity and subsequent proliferation of those horrid Guy Fawkes masks.
Pirates 3 is the worst of the triology, but it is far from being a bad film,
the giant woman in the ocean was such a stupid idea, that scene killed the sense of the film
however I am so exited for Pirates 4, and I’ll be watching it in May
no need to hide when it comes to batman its overrated because the character is very popular just like toy story films overated because of the characters cars 2 is gonna be another overrated film but i dont mind if a film is overrated as long as its for the right reason which are people love the characters and the film was good when it comes to dark knight it was good ill never forget that joker in the nurses costumes walking out of the hospital and pressing the button and finnally when it goes off he jumps and starts walking faster a
Thew Joker was the only element I liked. I hate Christian Bale’s voice. I didn’t mind the hero/villain thing, but I did not like the moral Alfred revealed to us.
