Uh, wait. Sweeney Todd is a musical?
![]()
Yes, it is.
I can’t wait to see it.
As gruesome as it is, it’s never gruesome to the point of being upsetting, so I liked it
I hope you get to see it, IV!
Space Jam - Omg this movie is so absurd and dorky, it’s laugh-out-loud hilarious.
Seriously, who even came up with the connection between Looney Tunes and basketball!? The world may never know…from a critical point of view, it gets a C, but from my amusement, B-. ![]()
Puss in Boots: My expectations were kind of high for this film, and I’m proud to say that were met. This film is very funny. It’s probably one of the funniest films from Dreamworks that I’ve seen. Didn’t notice too many pop culture jokes which were good. The action was good as well. Loved that there weren’t any references or cameos to Shrek, which was something I worried about when I first heard they were making the film. The only bad thing is that the film runs out of steam at the end. The last 15 minutes just felt like Dreamworks putting together scenes to reach the 90 minute mark. The Humpty Dumpty character was just very plain and generic. Nothing too special about him. It’s better then Pooh and it’s kind of tied with Rango for best animated film this year. Overall, I’m going to give this movie an A-
My Updated Films list for 2011.
- Rango
- Puss in Boots
- Winnie the Pooh
- Rio
- Cars 2
- The Green Hornet
- I Am Number Four
My top 10 so far this year of the top of my head:
- Super 8
- The Adventures of Tintin
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
- Paul
- Horrible Bosses
- Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
- The Help
- Rise of the Planet of the Apes
- Attack the Block
- Winnie The Pooh
The distinct lack of animated films on there makes me a little depressed though
. It’s not that I didn’t like Cars 2, Kung Fu Panda 2, Rango and Rio, I just decided that this year, the live action films have been better.
Have any of you guys seen the 16 submissions for the Best Animated Feature? It actually really interested me. Some films have no chance imo (the Hoodwinked sequel…), some are controversial due to their usage of mocap (The Adventures of Tintin, Mars Needs Moms, Happy Feet Two), and two of them are not animated films in the slightest! I am referring to The Smurfs and Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked-how on Earth are these films animated?!
Is it too early to starting predicting the Oscars? ![]()
I’ll be rooting for Tintin this year. It’s the best motion capture so far.
I’m rooting for it too. I’m hoping it’ll get a Best Animated Feature nod (if Speilberg does some bending with the mocap rules, which, looking at the Academy’s voting habits and inconsistancy, I’m quite confident he will
), and maybe just maybe Best Score, Visual Effects and Adapted Screenplay nods. I’m also rooting for Speilbergs other film, War Horse, if only because it’s source is very good and it comes across as very Oscar baity. I’d like Gary Oldman to at least get nominated for his performance in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy too, as it was marvellous and he is long long overdue a nomation, and I would like pretty much any of the female cast of The Help to get Actress or Supporting Actress nominations.
I think it’s a little too early to determine who’ll get nominated for Oscars since there’s some more films to be released this year.
I was just talking about Best Animated Feature because it’s too early to tell about the rest, but other nominations I can see happening are:
-For Best Actor, besides Oldman, I think Di Caprio will get a nod an most probably win for his role in J. Edgar, which probably will get a Best Picture nomination, depending on the number of slots they decide to have this year.
-For Best Actress I can see both Kirsten Dunst and Rooney Mara getting nominations, but probably Mara will be the eventual winner.
-I still don’t know about War Horse, but it at least has very high possibilities for Best Cinematography and, hopefully, Best Score. I can also see it getting the Best Picture nomination, but lets wait and see.
-For Best Picture I’m pretty sure the winner will be… The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo. Fincher will also get the award for Best Director because of it.
As I said before, it’s to early to tell, but of these I’m reasonably sure.
Yeah I see what you mean, but speculating is fun ![]()
I’m not so sure about The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo winning best picture myself though; I hate the impression that they have to “make it up” to Fincher. And I’ve not heard great things about J. Edgar, although I haven’t seen it yet
. But I agree with the rest of your predictions SoA ![]()
I still hadn’t read the J. Edgar reviews, as it is released tomorrow. But you’re right, the early ones haven’t been as favorable as I thought they would be, except on one point: Di Caprio’s performance. So I back away on the Best Picture claims but keep the Best Actor one.
And about The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, I agree most people will see it as a reward to Fincher, but the film looks strong enough on it’s own, so far. Let’s wait for the release.
Yep, the original production starred Angela Lansbury (Mrs. Potts of Beauty and the Beast) cast as Mrs. Lovett.
I’m seeing J Edgar tommorrow.
Has anyone seen Falling Down? I saw it on TCM one night.
I haven’t, but I love TCM.
J. Edgar: Wow. This movie blew me away, one of the best of this year. The acting was great, and the way the story was told was fantastic. I give it an A.

I too really enjoyed Bridesmaids :). A very funny movie., although I preferred Horrible Bosses, which I found to be laugh out loud funny ![]()
I still need to see Horrible Bosses!
I watched the movie The Wizard of Oz and Harry Potter and the order of the Phoenix over the week.
