Movies - both new and old

Anybody seen the Predator movies? Both of them are some of my favourites. The first one was fantastic, with it’s plot of an elite forces squad stranded in a rainforest and stalked by an extra-terrestrial being, which slaughters them one by one. Arnold Schwarzenegger was brilliant in it as well, with his trademark one-liners. (“GET TO THE CHOPPA!”, “Stick around!”). The second one with Danny Glover was brilliant as well. Took everything good about the first and placed it in the urban environment of Los Angeles. Don’t understand why critics hated it. Just like Robocop 2, I found it a worthy sequel that was just as good as the original.

The Amazing Spider-Man: Superior to the first Raimi one, with Andrew Garfield suiting Spider-Man so much more than Tobey Maguire. Also finally Gwen Stacy is put in her rightful place in a Spider-Man film, with Emma Stone doing a great job as the character. I’m not too keen on the Lizard’s design, I wish they went for more of the 1980s Comic Lizard look. Sure the film had some flaws, but overall really enjoyed it and liked it more than the first Raimi film. 8/10.

I just got back from Wreck-It Ralph! I could scream, it was so perfect!! But I will refrain from doing so, as shouting is generally frowned upon on these forums.

But regardless of if you even enjoy video games I think you will like it! A big 9/10 from me. There are clichés, but the movie is told so freshly and with the same level of imagination that Pixar told Toy Story with. Just, so so creative and well-done!

Sunset Boulevard This movie blew me away! I loved the run down mansion. It kind of had a gothic feel to it. I also loved Gloria Swansons performance, even though I felt that at times she was dangerously close to being over the top. This is the third movie I’ve seen this year that was directed by Billy Wilder. Every one of them is in my top 10. I really need to watch the rest of his movies. The three movies I’ve seen by him have a darkness to them that I really dig. It’s a darkness that I haven’t seen in any of the movies from that time so far.

Well, she was playing a deranged silent cinema actress, so I think being over the top was quite natural.

How to Murder Your Wife This was an odd movie. It wasn’t what I was expecting, but I enjoyed it. It was fun watching Jack Lemon. But what I enjoyed the most was seeing the comic strips. Whoever drew them did an awesome job.

Over the weekend, I watched four movies I’d never seen before.

The Thing (2011) - Never seen the 1982 movie but I found this oddly hilarious. It was pretty corny. 8D Decently entertaining but really ridiculous. 6.8/10

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World - I’ve been aware of the graphic novels for a long time but I’ve never properly sat down to read them. Regardless, I thought this was an entertaining and fairly unique movie for what it was, although the pacing felt too quick at times. 7.8/10

Skyfall - Very good! I will guiltily admit I have not seen any of the Bond films besides this one so far. But the fact that I enjoyed it regardless sort of stands as a testimony to its goodness. 8.3/10

The Shining - I’d been wanting to see this for years, and I finally did, last night! Excellent stuff. I’ve never watched a Kubrick film before and I must say his filmmaking style is unique. The steadycam effectively gave a sense of dread. 8.8/10

Watch the 1982 original. I saw it a few nights ago and it’s one of my favourite sci-fi/horror movies. You may find it just as ridiculous though but it’s fun to watch despite the somewhat schlocky nature and pretty dated special effects (that still look really advanced for the time).

The 2011 version is a prequel to the 1982 version, though I haven’t seen it yet. There’s also a version from 1951 (The Thing from Another World), though I haven’t seen that either.

Yeah, I figured I should get around to that.

The Secret of NIMH: Wow, I was astounded by this. I kept thinking the entire time I was watching how impressed I was with it! Excellent story, voice acting, animation and art direction and a solid score. I like that they didn’t detract from the darker aspects of the story with unnecessary comic relief. It really feels like the characters are in genuine danger at times and that’s hard to find it family-oriented animation. I was touched, and I can’t believe I put off watching this! 8.5/10

^^^^^
I totally agree with you! Somebody told me how good it was and how I had to watch it. I was skeptical at first, but I ended up loving it. I’ve tried to watch a couple other Don Bluth movies, but they didn’t grab me like this one, but I’ll finish them one day.

Rise of the Guardians I really enjoyed this movie. It was a visual feast for the eyes, Jude Law did a great job as the villain, I enjoyed the dark tone, and the score was awesone. But there are some things I didn’t like. The character design for the kids was so ugly to me that it was distracting for a bit the first time I saw them. The eyes on just about every character was ugly and kind of creepy. There was to much action and exciting flying or scenes having to do with traveling throughout the movie that by the time the movie got to the final battle, I wasn’t excited about it, and had a MEH feeling once it was over. But I really enjoyed this movie, and it’s ashame that it’s underperforming at the box office.

I’ve seen the second one. It’s been awhile, but I probably enjoyed it. One thing I liked is that it does a summary of what happened in the first movie. I thought that was nice because it made more sense.

I myself had a movie spree today!

I saw Citizen Kane. Loved it obviously! It’s considered the greatest movie of all time. I think there are others that are greater, but it’s all opinion. I loved it still!

Rango: Played this in the background while I cleaned.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas: I watch this Jim Carrey film with my friend every Christmas. “MAX! Max, help me I’m feeling!”

Civil War on Drugs: Right now, playing in the background. Got to love the Whitest Kids!

I saw Citizen Kane for the first time during the summer and I love it. One of the things that made watching it so fun was seeing all the stuff that’s been parodied in tv shows and movies I’ve watched over the years.

I’m tired of Jude Apatow movies. I think they’ve always been a bit long, with most of the funny stuff in the first act, and the movie dragging a bit during the third act, but I always enjoyed them overall until the past few years are so. I gave his movie Five Year Engagement a chance, and it was so boring to me. I don’t think I’ll be watching his movies anymore.

Leirin, you must marry me now. Btw, I highly recommend Goldfinger, A View To A Kill, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, Licence To Kill, Goldeneye and Casino Royale (for each Bond actor) for the better adventures of the British spy.

You too, EJE!

After reading theoutsider’s and other members’ reviews of Rise Of The Guardians, I’m mighty tempted to catch a matinee of it this weekend before it disappears from theatres. But I wanna see CZ12, Jackie Chan’s action swansong, too! :frowning:

thinks

I would recommend you to watch the entire Bond series, Leirin. A lot of them are far from good, but it’s nice to know them all anyway to appreciate them as the film phenomenon they are.

TDIT’s suggestions are quite good, though I would never in this lifetime suggest A View to a Kill as Moore’s best (even when his era was among the weakest anyway).

You may like it if you’re into that kind of somewhat campy thing, but it ranks (in most lists including mine as one as the worst Bonds overall, not only Moore’s.

This is quite funny, too, because we were just watching A View to a Kill today as part of our Bond marathon when I read the post 8D

I’m seeing Rise of the Guardians tonight with a friend.

I’ve seen it for the first time over this break! I enjoyed it as well. It is definitely one of those movies everyone should see, because as you said, it’s parodied so much. And because it’s a fantastic film

I’ve seen a lot of films in the theaters this year. The Hobbit, Les Miserables, Monsters Inc 3D, and Wreck it Ralph.

My friend and I also re watched the first two Shrek movies. Which I enjoy, and I don’t care who disagrees!

Arthur Christmas: Loved it. It’s a nice, refreshing take on the classic cliches of Christmas and a very sweet ending with some very interesting commentary on a few levels that work nicely with the film. The animation is some of the best I have seen in any animated film within the last couple of years. A holiday film that will be worth the watch every holiday season. Also, Grand Santa just steals the show. A-

I really liked it if only for Christopher Walken and the sexy-scary Grace Jones as the baddies, haha. I haven’t watched all of Connery’s and Walken’s Bond films yet, so I suppose I might discover better entries for their roles.

I managed to catch one of Rise of the Guardian’s last screenings and CZ-12 in a cinema marathon yesterday (had to to go to two theatres with one hour between each screening). RotG really surprised me with its charm, while CZ-12, which I was was more in anticipation for, was kinda disappointing (although Jackie Chan’s still got it, hot d*mn that guy can still fight!).

I totally agree with you ellie, everybody should see Citizen Kane. The grandness (I guess that’s the right word. Or should i say scope?) of Citizen Kane amazed me since it was made in 1941. Charles is one of the most interesting characters I’ve seen in a movie. I’d love to sit in a room with some film buffs and hear them analyze this movie.
