Over the last few days I saw a bit of Arthur’s Quest, and all of Secret Garden and Tin Man. <3
Archibald - Dang. I’m gonna be at the front of the line for this film, man…
Thank you for the link/picture!

Dude Archibald! It looks really cool! Super excited for it!
I watched Return to OZ last night, because my brother had this strange and sudden urge to watch it after seeing Tin Man. He gets Zooey Deschanel confused with Fairuza Balk. Strange since Fairuza’s only 9 years old in that movie …
And I’m going to see The Golden Compass this Saturday even though I heard bad things. I was going to read the book first but I could only find them in softcover and I was picky …
Oh man, I was so excited to watch the Compass movie. Now I am starting to have second thoughts.
I just saw that movie, The Golden Compass, yesterday. Isn’t it a book? or is it in a series like Harry Potter? because i was puzzled at the end of the moive as if they are going to make more.
SheriffChick: It’s a series.
I think it got bad reviews because it’s anti-religious. Therefore, I am not trusting those reviews.
I just watched a bit of Parole Officer on sundance. Great film I was lucky to see the whole thing at one point. Don’t think I’ll buy the DVD though because the price is too much coming from the UK.
The one thing that grates on me so much with ‘The Golden Compass’, is that it is not a compass! There are no compasses in the book, nor in the film! There is nothing in the entire series designed to point to North! It’s called an alethiometer! Not a compass! I just don’t get why they didn’t stick with the original title- Northern Lights. It’s more relevant and makes perfect sense, and I really think it sounds less cheesy.
They should never have converted this book, or any of The Dark Materials, into a film at all. The books are written eloquently, and do have a very heavy literary approach, and this just does not convert well into film at all, especially into the kind of big blockbuster-y type films like Narnia or Harry Potter. They work well, because The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is very whimsical and actually stays true to the book (at least, more than 'The Golden “Compass” does) and JK Rowling’s humour in Harry Potter transverses well on the big screen. Northern Lights was all about the characters, not the big action sequences, and despite how nice-looking it is, it would’ve been better done by a smaller, individual company using unknown actors and actresses.
Or just not at all.

Hopefully the next book converted to film in the series, ‘The Subtle Knife’ (which will probably end up as ‘The Pointy Thing’) will do a little better.
I think a remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds comes out in 2009. I’ve thought of the idea of a remake of the film myself. I mean, Psycho got remade, so the idea of remaking The Birds was very intriguing, and what would make it even better is Tim Burton at the helm. Sadly, I don’t think he’ll direct it, given the fact that he has three directorial projects in the works (Alice in Wonderland, Frankenweenie, and The Spook’s Apprentice) . But still, in my opinion, they should wait a couple of years to make the film so Tim can helm it.
Besides The Birds , I also want Tim to direct Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows , but that’s not going to happen.
Last night I finally watched a movie I had bought some time ago in a set- 5 Children and It. It was so underrated and I am shocked that I hadn’t heard of it before. I loved it- reminded me of the good old time fantasy movies I watched when I was little.
And just a couple of minutes ago, I watched Buddy … mostly just to see Alan Cumming. But it was great anyways.
I think I’m finally seeing Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street tomorrow. This will be my first R-rated film viewing experience (given the fact that I saw the first 24 minutes of Saving Private Ryan (the flashback war scene at the begining) on television when I was 11) , but I’m mature enough for it. The film has gotten rave reviews so far. I have yet to see one bad review of it. It’s been nomitated for 4 Golden Globe awards as well as already winning a number of awards
Another movie got announced:
Last night, I saw Rush Hour 3 (one of the funniest movies I have ever seen) and Spider-Man 3 (really enjoyable.)
Finally saw all of The Wiz. Wonderful film but the dance sequences ran on a little too long and it made me lose my focus. >_<
I saw I Am Legend a few nights ago. It was surprisingly good- I’m generally not that keen on Will Smith as an actor, but he really played the part. The movie really did manage to create that feel of isolation that only a few good disaster movies have done in the past.
I watched The Kingdom a few nights ago. It’s about Al Qaida terrorists in the middle east. I absolutely loved this film. It was a masterpiece. Special team of US detectives are sent to track down a terrorist leader in charge of making explosives and such. Also saw Superbad for the second time. The first time I laughed the hardest, the second I didn’t really pay attention. I watched Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) for the 123rd time. And then Commando (1985), for the 76th time. I aim to see Predator (1987) for the first time, soon. I love AHNALD’s movies.
I forgot to mention I saw The Golden Compass and I Am Legend.
Golden Compass was good, but now that I’m mostly through the book it was based on I’m thinking otherwise as usual.
I Am Legend freaked me out- moreso because I’ve been to a lot of the places they filmed at in the film. It was awesome nonetheless, but the ending threw me. I wanted to see things go back to normal if they ever did.
I saw I Am Legend today. I liked the first half, because it was quiet and spooky at the same time… you can really feel how alone Will Smith’s character was in this entire city. It was just… eery, but in a likeable way. The rest of it (when most of the action took place) just made it seem like a B-movie, and while my heart jumped in many places, I lost a bit of interest. The scene when Smith’s character goes into the darkness to find his dog… oh man… that was scary, but awesome. I think his acting was great.
Aggie: Maybe you should put spoil tags in your post, just in case. Yeah, could’ve been more interesting, but it was pretty scary … I’m not the horror film type, so I find I enjoy more of the subtle ones out there, which is fine with me. Doesn’t take a lot to impress me in that area.
Last night I watched … Erik the Viking, a hysterical movie with two of the Pythons, and well worth it. Then I saw the sequel to Dragonheart, which was complete crud even though I tried to justify it. Somewhere in the middle I lost interest and it surprises me that the CGI was way worse than the first- the first actually looked pretty great considering the time it was made.
Then I saw Superbad for the first time since seeing it in theatre. Still crude, but funny.
My mother really wants to see The Bucket List . I have to say that since she’s brought it to my attention, I’m interesting in seeing it as well. Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman are playing the leads.
I saw Juno recently. It’s really good. And I also saw some of The Wild … it actually wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Better than Madagascar, IMO.
