Movies - both new and old

With the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise bringing back the pirate film, it is still relatively considered a dead genre. Given the phenominal success of the three Pirates films, it’s a bit surprising that the films’ huge profits didn’t immediately spawn of slew of buccaneer-themed projects. One notable exception is DreamWorks’ upcoming biopic of the notorious English privateer who terrorized travelers of the high seas in the early eighteenth century.

Blackbeard is currently scheduled for release in 2010, and in contrast to Pirates, will be a serious take on its subject based on historical fact.

As for who I think should play the famous pirate, I believe Gerard Butler would be an excellent choice.

Getting back to Pirates of the Caribbean, Disney announced this past Wednesday that Johnny will return for a fourth installment of the franchise, as well as playing the role of Tonto in a remake of The Lone Ranger and the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. The latter film is scheduled for a release date of March 5, 2010, and has begun filming.

Did you guys see that one longer shot in the TV spots for Quantum of Solace where Bond and some other guy are fighting and they end up falling and landing on some scaffolding? I think that was a genius and expertly filmed shot! It was awesome!!!

I’m quite looking forward to the next Bond film. I think Daniel Craig did very well in the last one, and they’re usually quite fun films to watch. I’ve seen that shot, TS2, I think from a trailer for the film. It looked very painful!

I wish they could just leave Pirates of the Caribbean alone. I think the last of the so-called ‘trilogy’ was a bit of a disappointment, and continuing on with it just seems desperate.

I saw Tropic Thunder in the cinema the other day. Not as laugh-out-loud funny as I thought it would be, and a very simple storyline, but certain actors really made the film, most notably Jack Black and Tom Cruise, surprisingly.

I liked Pirates 1 and LOVED number 2, but number three is just too stupid and complicated for me to care about it at all or take it seriously.

When it comes to the Pirates of the Carribean Movies, My favorite is the Black Pearl. The “World’s End” one is my second favorite, and I thought the “Dead man’s Chest” was just not as strong as the first one.

I saw Fireproof yesterday in theaters. And man, That movie is great. A must see!

So, I didn’t see Ghost Town. But this friday I’m off school and will see either Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist or Miracle at St. Anna. I love Spike Lee’s movies!!!

Sequels. As John Lasseter put it, they are known for being bad. Dead Man’s Chest wasn’t really my favorite, either. It just didn’t have the same exciting vibe I feel when watching the first. Okay, so we get Captain Sparrow back again, then we see him in some sword-fight. Okay, then what? It’s just kinda the same thing again, like how John claimed that we are seeing the same characters again.

At World’s End was not bad, only because it was a grand finale. We get to see a lot of dramatic stuff, like the whirlpool scene, Chow Yun Fat (my mum’s idol) starring in the film and CAMEOED OUR COUNTRY (OH YEAH! ), the death of James Norrington, and finally, the defeat of the ever deceptive villain, Lord Cutler Beckett, his defeated look shadowing the fall of his ship. :unamused:

Not a bad film series, overall, but it could had been better. I just dig Jack, that’s all. :stuck_out_tongue:

I loved At World’s End too, although people whine about how ‘confusing and convoluted’ it is. I like the plot, it just keep twisting and turning and just when you thought you figured out where one character’s alliances lie, they pull the rug from beneath your feet. I just watched Dead Man’s Chest on Free to Air yesterday and the six-way battle (Jack, Will, Norrington, Elizabeth, Pintel and Ragetti, and the Flying Dutchman crew) for Davy Jone’s Locker, each with their own motive and purpose for obtaining the heart. At World’s End was probably full of this double-crossing and betrayals too, although it’s been a long time since I watched it so I can’t remember. I do agree with WBoon, Singapore’s cameo was awesome (although they made it look more like a Thai river market in the middle of the Amazon jungle. Singapore’s river was waaay wider than that drain canal!), and the final whirpool showdown was epic in every sense.

Right now I’m seriously stoked for Bolt and Quantum of Solace. Frustratingly again, the former only comes out in Jan in Oz (and I’m not even sure of the Sing release, as I’ll be back there then). Heck, I’d probably get to watch it on SIA’s in-flight entertainment system before it even reaches Down Under’s cinemas! I’m really interested to see whether Disney can top its amazing Meet the Robinsons, especially with jolly ol’ Lasseter at the helm.

As for Solace, let’s just say I’m a big fan of Craig as Bond since Casino Royale. I’ve only watched Brosnan’s Tomorrow Never Dies and Die Another Day from the Bond series, so I only am used to his trademark wiseguy smirk. No, I haven’t seen Connery, Moore, Lazenby or Dalton in case you’re wondering. But Craig’s intense stare and perpetual frown brings a hard-edged tinge to his cold, ruthless killer-for-hire character, and that’s apparently what the Bond films were all about before it got all CGI and goofy for its own good. Like Batman’s much-need kick in the pants after Batman & Robin.

The trailer is as good as Royale, I loved the part where Bond takes a leap off the roof only to smack his head into the opposite wall. It’s so funny and unexpected of a hero to make a mistake when escaping his pursuers, and it makes Bond all the more human. I also like the themes of revenge and all that, and I’m really excited for the car chase as the last one was a cop-out. The film could have done with less swearing, but I guess they were trying to give it a real-world feel. At least the villians are more convincing than the far-fetched ones in earlier adventures.

I’m sooo pumped for these two films now. I’m probably going to kickstart an ad campaign on my YT channel, so stay tuned!

LoL at the Solace trailer; my friends laughed, too, when I told them about the part where M said, “Get Bond!” XD “Restrict Bond’s movement!” XD

and then there was none…great mystery film.

Just saw it this afternoon…great characters and bone chilling deaths and murders!

I saw Eagle Eye 2 days ago. I really liked the movie. It was great following the characters and trying to figure out the whole thing that is behind everything. Not that i am gonna spoil anything for you guys.

Finally ! I’m going to see " The Dark Knight "… Aaaah i waited for a long time to get this one ! :stuck_out_tongue:

You will love it. People agree it is one of the best movies of the year.

better then WALL-E??

I loved it far better than WALL-E.

Whhaaat???

I didn’t like WALL-E at all. It wasn’t my favorite Pixar movie and not my favorite movie overall. I liked Dark Knight so much more.

ahhhh…now i see why.

Really? You do? I never explained any reason why.
