Movies - both new and old

Mitch: Uh. . .I meant to send the chocolate chip cookies to rachel, and the oatmeal rasin ones to you. . .stupid delivery boy.

Back on topic. . .

The Star Swordsman - Seriously? Oh well. Too bad, 'cause I ate 'em all. You got any more of those cookies? :stuck_out_tongue:

But, yes, back on-topic. (snigger)

I finally took a leaf out of KE’s book and watched an episode of the Mystery Science Theater 3000 series. (My dad borrowed a copy from a friend of his, so my family and I took to watching it one night.) Down-right hilarious. I can’t wait to see the next one…

One Movie, Five Views: Can you recommend any new indies to me? There seems to be a lax in that department as of late.

Anyone who’s seen Watchmen: [spoil]Did you notice that in the beginning of the film, the Comedian’s apatment room number is 3001, and when he’s being beat mercilessly, the number 1 snaps off, so the number-for a few brief moments-is ‘300’? Zack Snyder apparently likes referrencing his own work. [/spoil]

Also, I’ve been following the Where the Wild Things Are Spike Jonze-directed film for quite some time now. Has anyone else? I’m very excited about it, I like what I’m seeing. Apparently, the first official trailer is being attached to Monsters Vs. Aliens, the new DreamWorks (I can barely bring myself to call it this) film.

WTWTA is about to become part of my new signature.

At One Movie, Five Views I have a once a month feature called Overlooked Films. Here is a link to the page:

(The director of our latest overlooked film, Saint Ralph, has a new movie out called One Week, which we reviewed on March 6th. I think it’s just in Canada right now, but hopefully it will get a wider release. There is a thread on here about it already.)

We also reviewed a great little film called Henry Poole Is Here on August 21st, 08, and did a DVD review on January 20th, 09.

On February 24th, 09, we reviewed West of Pluto (A L’ouest De Pluton) which is a Canadian movie following 24 hours in the life of a dozen teenagers.

On November 12, 08 we reviewed Fox Searchlight’s award winning film Slumdog Millionaire.

This year Fox Searchlight is releasing a bunch of interesting indie films, including 500 Days of Summer, Adam and the new film from the writer, director of Napoleon Dynamite, Gentleman Broncos. Here is a link to the coming soon section of FSL’s website: content.foxsearchlight.com/films

There was also a great little film that you have to check out that opened last June, 27th…but you’ve probably already seen it.

That’s what comes to mind right now, but we have also reviewed some other very interesting little films…

OH MY GOSH! Jared Hess, the guy who directed Napoleon is making another movie! I’m so exicted!

Here are the synopsis’s and info for the upcoming Fox Searchlight films I had mentioned, for anyone who didn’t follow the link:

(It doesn’t mention it here, but the character, Adam, has Aspergers Syndrome)

Interesting movie from Jared Hess. Nacho Libre is one of my top 25 films of all time so… look forward to what he’s doing.

Just saw the French film Joyeux Noel for the first time. WW1 Christmas Truce film with Diane Kruger as a German singer and other great performances. Very well done and highly recommended.

Thanks, OM,FV! I’ve seen Slumdog twice and absolutely love it, but I’d never heard of Adam or Gentlemen Broncos before! And thanks for the list.

Oh, and I also loved Henry Poole Is Here.

I just watched Atonement all the way through for the first time.

I have to say, it’s not one specific thing that was great, but it was everything!

10 out of 10 for Atonement! Great, great film!

I just watched Ghost Town last night. I thought this would be a really good film. It was even better than I thought it would be!! :stuck_out_tongue:  I would probably give it about a 7.1 - 7.2 out of 10!

I also watched [i:32i48rif]Ghost Town[/i:32i48rif] not too long ago and I have to say, I was impressed. I left wanting more, and I love it when a film can do that. [b:32i48rif]8.5 out of 10 for me![/b:32i48rif]

I also recently watched [i:32i48rif]Happy Go Lucky[/i:32i48rif]. You know, it’s too bad that Mike Leigh is way too much of an actor’s director, because the point of the film gets lost because his actors are trained to cement their chracters in minute detail, which ultimately overshadows everything else in the film. It’s also too bad Eddie Marsan wasn’t more recognized for his performance. He truly [i:32i48rif]deserved[/i:32i48rif] an Oscar. Anyways, becuase it is too slow-paced and much too detailed for the message to come across without thinking long and hard about it, [b:32i48rif]Happy Go Lucky is a 5 out of 10 for me.[/b:32i48rif] Good intentions, horrible execution. Very disappointing.

I also watched [i:32i48rif]Hamlet 2[/i:32i48rif], which I sincerely wanted to be funny, but never really was. [b:32i48rif]3 out of 10.[/b:32i48rif] [b:32i48rif]Don’t even waste your time. [/b:32i48rif]You’ve been warned. :-\

I saw Alvin and the Chipmunks. I thought that they were really cute and the singing didn’t really annoy me as much as I thought.

Last night I watched [i:2do32ajv]Twilight[/i:2do32ajv] and the direct-to-DVD film, [i:2do32ajv]Futurama: Bender’s Big Score[/i:2do32ajv].

[i:2do32ajv]Twilight[/i:2do32ajv] was a pretty good movie, and it was a lot better than I thought it would be. Although I was right about one thing. The book was much better. :-\

[i:2do32ajv]Bender’s Big Score[/i:2do32ajv] was a really good movie. It was even better than the TV show! I would highly reccomend it.

Bedtime Stories was really funny and very enjoyable and The Last Mimzy was high in action, adventure, and mystery. They both are just packed with inspirational imagination.

Just saw Serenity for the ninth time! I love that movie! Any other Firefly fans out there? That would be SHINY!

Super Size Me - the best documentary, like, ever! :stuck_out_tongue:  This movie was so good. Did you know that the amount of soda in a Super Size cup from McDonald’s is two liters? If you want to learn more about fast food and how bad it is for you, watch this! [i]Super Size Me would get a 8.6 out of ten![/i]

carlfredricksen - Firefly is awesome! I got the series and Serenity on DVD for Christmas and I absolutely love them. The series is superb but as this is a movie thread:

Serenity was good but I was a liitle disappointed that the ‘western’ feel of the show was gone. I also didn’t like the way that some major characters [spoil]were killed without really explaining it properly (looking at you Shepard Book…)[/spoil] but I suppose they had to cram a whole series into one film.

At any rate, I’d give Serenity a 7/10 but for anyone who hasn’t seen the series before hand that would probably be more of a 5.5-6/10.

My favourite film at the moment (apart from WALL-E of course) is The Dark Knight. I seriously can’t get over just how good that film is. 9/10 for sure.

Halos Nach Tariff - Good to know you love Firefly… actually, I saw Serenity first and have since seen Firefly on DVD. I thought Serenity was awesome by itself, but you’re right; it has gotten better after I’ve seen the series.

Sure, they had to cram a lot of stuff into the movie, but didn’t Joss say that the movie would have been basically the end of season 2 if the show wasn’t canceled. I do want to know more about Shepherd Book, there’s a lot there that was never explained, but it fit the story. The craziest part is when [spoil]Wash gets impaled suddenly,[/spoil] that made me jump so bad the first time I watched it.

Great series and film.

Just saw Bolt. Really good…got me laughing at some parts and almost teary at others (maybe because I’m kinda too sensitive or something). Bolt is really lovable!

Last night, I managed to view Just Like Heaven. It was rather enjoyable, actually. I don’t see too many romantic comedy films, but this was okay.

Here’s the theatrical trailer for Public Enemies:

I watched Rain Man last night. For being such an award winning movie, it was only the first time I had seen it. I really enjoyed it. Not a huge Tom Cruise fan, but Dustin Hoffman was amazing!
