The Tale of Desperaux, Bedtime Stories, Hotel for Dogs, Race to Witch Mountain, The Princess and the Frog, Up, and I would like to see Coraline again, this time in 3-D.
I completely agree with this after having gone to see it last Friday. The movie falls short and fails to capture what makes the book so special. And as the movie is so very dense and long, there’s a lot of information to cram in that people who aren’t familiar with the book may leave the cinema a little baffled by.
For me it didn’t really work as an adaptation (While almost staying 100% faithful to the book) And as a stand alone movie, it may come across as confusing, but possibly warrant multiple viewings.
It’s nice to look at, visually. But there’s none of the depth that is in the book. So, beautiful images are all well and good, but I could stand in an art gallery for three hours and it could cost nothing.
Despite Zack’s best efforts, Watchmen remains a failure for me.
Not sure what I think about Watchmen. It wasn’t at all mind-blowingly amazing, but still not terrible, I need to see it again.
The three things that really bug me are [spoil]all the absurd gore (breaking bones in the fights), the sudden soft-core porn scene in the Owl ship (the censored asterisks mean people are gonna think of a worse word then the one I typed. Heh.), and (worst of all, in my mind) the missing scene between Dr. Manhattan and Veidt at the end. I really wanted to see Veidt’s uncertainty and search for approval of what he did from Manhattan, and Manhattan to say “Nothing ever ends”. Bah.[/spoil]
Pros: [spoil]VERY true to the book (I love the comic), Good visuals, Great pacing, Jackie Earl Haley’s performance as Rorshach just might be one of the best this year, Fantastic handling of the ending, wasn’t too sissy with the violence or the graphic nudity, great tone of storytelling, the guy who played Nite Owl was also pretty good, as well as the actor who was The Comedian.[/spoil]
Cons: [spoil]The actress who played Silk Spectre is just not all that good as an actress, there were a few ‘gory details’ that didn’t nedd to be put in, but I did like the fearlessness that came with that, and there was one section where they were trying to find some info and the pacing felt just a tad off-balance.[/spoil]
Overall: I liked it. Not the best I wanted it to be, but a 7.5 out of 10 nonetheless.
Rorschach. Absolutely love that guy. But due to [spoil]what happens to him at the end, I now hate Dr. Manhattan.[/spoil] What an idiot.
I thought the film was pretty good overall, though much too long and with not enough truly strong characters. I’d like to watch it again, though just for Rorschach more than anything.
This is a TV show but who cares? I rented the first season of Heroes at Blockbuster and I hated it! I’d have to admit though I only watched the beginning of the pilot, so they were probably just setting up the story. I wasn’t really in the mood to watch TV when I saw it so I’m definitely going to try again later.
Other than that, I kinda want to see Night at the Museum II: Escape from the Smithsonian. I just read an article about it.
I just watched a great hidden gem called Closing the Ring. It starred Shirley MacLaine, Christopher Plummer, Neve Campbell, Mischa Barton, Stephen Amell, David Alpay, Gregory Smith, Pete Postlethwaite and Martin McCann.
Pros: Great cast, solid performances from all (except one, but I’ll get to that in a minute), By the climax of the film you are on the edge of your seat, really an epic romance, great settings and good moods, as the film goes all across the board. Great story for its epic scope and far-reaching plot. Great characterization, too!
Cons: [spoil]Neve Campbell’s performance was very, very one-note and that was really rather annoying to watch. Also, there’s this pop song in the credits that really does not do the tone, characters, or story any justice. But hey, they put that kind of thing in every romance nowadays. [/spoil]
But, overall: I really was immersed in the story! Richard Attenborough, the director of the film, also directed Ghandi and it shows! 9 out of 10!!! (And when has a movie ever been bad when Christopher Plummer’s got a lead role, huh?)
Wow. Glad that at least some people are seeing Closing the Ring. I agree with you TS2, this movie was amazing. Also, the pop song during the credits breaks the mood and just doesn’t fit, as you said.
We reviewed it back on January 27th, when the DVD came to Canada, and the consensus on our website was as follows:
It’s too bad that more people haven’t seen it. Also, why it is at such a low rating, (29%), on the Tomato Meter is beyond me. Granted, there are only 14 reviews there. Practically no one has seen it it seems… (Actually, oddly, it is on Rotten Tomatoes twice, once with 4 fresh and 10 rotten, and then uploaded again with just one fresh review - kinda odd.)
It’s a good movie, and I definitely would recommend it.
I’ve read the entire Watchmen graphic novel and I agree with the fans that it’s a stunner! Though I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone under, say, 18 for mature themes and violence. From what I’ve heard from my friends who’ve seen the movie though, they’ve changed sequences like Roscharch’s childhood scene and the climax involving Dr. Manhattan. But I bet Snyder replicated some of the comic’s ‘epic’ shots to the point like 300.
I just watched Death Race and Speed Racer last weekend! Oh yeah… I love me car chases and races!
As much as I’m cynical of DreamWorks, I’m getting stoked for Monsters Vs. Aliens in the hopes that Kung Fu Panda is not just a lucky fluke and that this is their return to form. There’s only one way to find out!
And I just discovered another interesting upcoming animated film called Battle for Terra today. I posted the trailer link and my thoughts on it in the Other Animation thread if anyone’s interested.
