Movies - both new and old

Oh, I remember seeing that movie in theaters! I loved it, Sean Penn was great in it. I always think of Harvey Milk when I go to San Francisco’s City Hall, they have a really neat bust of him there!

Yeah, Sean Penn really stole the show. He’s just such an amazing actor. I think my favorite of his performances were Sam in I Am Sam and Jimmy in Mystic River. In both films he plays a devoted father to a daughter, but the two characters are about as different as can be. It really shows you how much scope he has as an actor.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine: C
Dr. No: B-
X-Men: B

XD lol, that movie was bad. Tomorrow is Friday the 13th, and to celebrate the national day of my favorite horror movie franchise, I’ll be viewing The Final Chapter for the first time. Last Friday the 13th I saw Part III, Part 2 before, and before that I saw the remake in theatres as well as the original. It’s become a tradition for me to see a new Jason film every Friday the 13th in chronolgical order, and I’ve heard from many people that number 4 is the best.

I saw Scott Pilgrim vs. the World on Friday night. A+

Last night, I watched Lilo & Stitch. I’ve never been a fan of this movie, but after rewatching it, I realized what a great story it is. My favorite part about this movie is the fact that it is set in Hawaii. I’ll give it a B.

Right now, I’m waching Brother Bear. This has always been one of my favorite movies. Mostly because I’ve always loved hiking/outdoors/wildlife/Native American culture. This movie has all of those things in it. This movie is funny, underrated, has great music and animation.

My favorite part is the transformation scene. The score with the Inuit singing is beautiful. My score: A

Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter: B
A Bug’s Life: A+ (obviously)

Buzz&Woodyforever - I can’t wait to see Scott Pilgrim when it comes out in Italy. I’ve been waiting in anticipation for months!

ellie-jessie-eve - Lilo & Stitch is one of my favorite Disney films because it is funny, beautifully animated, and sad (well, it does a good job at trying to be sad), I’d give it a B+. I can’t say I love Brother Bear, but it has some great moments. The bonding scenes are incredible and the songs are really good. You have to love the Nemo cameo, and the visuals are once again outstanding. However, in my opinion, too many things exist that I don’t like, like the somewhat forced jokes and the so-so ending, but that’s just my opinion. It is definetally underrated, but not as good as Lilo & Stitch, so I’d give it a B-.

I just saw Galaxy Quest… that movie is absolutely hilarious! It starred three Pixar actors/actresses: Tim Allen, Tony Shalhoub, and Sigourney Weaver. :sunglasses:

Chuckles: I agree, the Brother Bear ending is tacky!

Today, I watched a movie that I thought I’d never see again. I remember when this movie came out in middle school, and everybody LOVED it! I loved it the first time I saw it. But we watched it again and again in school, and at friends houses, that I eventually hated it.

I’m talking about Napoleon Dynomite.
Which, isn’t as bad as a movie as I once thought! There were lots of laughable parts. Like his dance scene, and the “You’re Mom Goes to College” quote. And my favorite, when Napoleon takes one of the Vote for Summer dresses, and he throws it against a locker and runs off.

My problems with this movie are that it goes by real slow, and has no plot. I hate plotless movies, but this movie was pretty good for having no plot.

Another thing: Napoleon and his friends are active in FFA (Future Farmers of America). Some of you out there know that I, ellie-jessie-eve, was very involved in FFA in high school. I was the Chapter President, raised livestock, and won Public Speaking Contests. In the movie, FFA is kind of shown as a joke. They play with chickens, and drink milk, and look at cows utters by stereotypical hick farmers. But maybe that’s what it’s like in Idaho.

Bottom Line: A great movie…if you see it once! Grade: B

Very niiice… how much?

It would seem apt for me to watch this 2008 Friedberg and Seltzer-produced and directed comedy on Free-To-Air with their next spoof Vampires Suck premiering Stateside this week.

The barebones plot is an almost scene-for-scene remake of the Zack Snyder epic 300, but with contemporary pop-culture references thrown in. And not too subtly either, with the characters shouting the titles of the films just in case you can’t remember or don’t ‘get it’. The thing is, this hackneyed duo don’t know what constitutes a good spoof movie. While the greats like Zucker, Brooks and Python mocked genre conventions, Spartans, Disaster Movie, and other F&S productions settle for chucking in whatever happens to be the latest blockbuster or ‘flavour of the month’ current affairs issue, which makes their films very dated. Great spoof movies like Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Blazing Saddles or Spaceballs are timeless, and their humour is more of gentle observation of genre cliches and how this can be subverted or even paid homage to.

I have to admit, though, I laughed pretty hard at some scenes; like the American Idol judges being pushed table-and-all into the Pit of Doom, or the men of Sparta greeting their women with high-fives and awkward kisses with their mates, the “Yo Mama” contest, and the very clever poke at the use of CGI for “visual effects”. Others, like the ‘Stomp the Yard’ dance-off, or the various cameos by Rocky, Ghost Rider and Paris Hilton are annoying and cringeworthy.

Overall, it’s not that bad as many people say it is, but it’s not very good, either. I’d give it a 2/5 stars because I’m a fan of YTPs and silly mash-ups, but if you hate that sort of stuff, give this one a kick into the bottomless hole in the ground.

P.S. By the way, I did like the Toy Story quote and the “YESSS…!” fist-pumps done by Ken Davitian of Borat fame. And stay for the credits, which are much funnier than most of the movie.

:frowning:

No wonder it’s called Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. I hate how everyone whines about sequels and reboots, and finally when a big budget original movie comes out, it bombs. What is wrong with people?

I just saw One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. It was incredible; brilliant performances and great dialogue. Jack Nicholson has always been my favorite actor, and now I love him even more. It is a very sad movie, yet I haven’t smiled this much during a movie in years. I’m reading the book right now, and the movie is one of my all time favorites.

This is one of my favorite movies! I need to get around to reading the book. Anyway, that movie is fantastic. I think it’s one of those movies that everyone needs to see some point in their lives.

Yesterday I saw Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and it was SO awesome! It was really original and funny, and it made me really want to buy all the comic books and read them.

I’d give this movie a solid 9.5/10.

I’ve been hearing a lot of raves about Scott Pilgrim, and my bro wants to see it. But I have this negative preconception that it’s a teenybopper movie geared towards the Hannah Montana/Justin Bieber generation. Will more ‘grown-up’ cynical old fogies like me find anything to like there (ie Is it as universal as Pixar movies are, or will it appeal only to young adults)? I’m curious and open-minded to see it, but I just need an idea what I’m going into.

Oh my god, it’s Speed 2 on a train!

Unstoppable trailer

Laugh out loud, it looked like Denzel’s character transferred from NYC Metro to the big boys! XD

I’m going to see Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore this week! I know it looks stupid, but, sadly, I loved the first one when I was little. Yeah, it’s probably not going to be very good, but I’m excited! :stuck_out_tongue:

While I was on vacation, I watched a total of 10 movies! Very productive vacation for me…I did nothing but read and watch movies…anyway, here are the movies I watched!

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Nowhere near as juvenile as the trailers made it out to be. I thoughrouly enjoyed this film, and I plan on watching it again soon. The only problem I had with it was the fact that the protagonist could be a bit selfish and whiny at times. 8/10

The Princess and the Frog: I must admit, I was a bit let down by this one. Please don’t kill me, rabid fans! hides in the corner I loved the music, the animation, and the characters, I just…I don’t know, expected more. 7/10

Gamer: I’m a gamer myself, and also a huge fane of both Gerard Butler and Dexter’s Michael C. Hall. Although I liked the premise, the story was a little convoluted, and could have gone further, I thought. 6/10

Julie & Julia: Another surprise! Meryl Streep steals the show as Julia Child (of course) and Amy Adams does a wonderful job as well playing Julie Powell (although I hear the real Powell is nowhere near as charming as her on-screen counterpart). Right up there with Ratatouille as one of my favorite cooking movies! 8/10

Public Enemies: I love Johnny Depp, I really do, but I just couldn’t get into this film. It’s probably the time period and setting; Depression-era America has never really grabbed me. 7/10

Flowers in the Attic: Not as good as the book, or so I’ve heard. Apparently they down-played a lot of the more mature elements of the book, which is understandable. I was surprised by the lacklustre performances though, especially on the part of Louise Fletcher, aka Nurse Ratched. 5/10

Death at a Funeral: Not as bad as I thought it would be, but not great. Peter Dinklage was the highlight of the movie for me. 5/10

Charlie Bartlett: I didn’t like this one nearly as much as I thought I would. 6/10

Date Night: I’m not a big fan of Steve Carell. Usually I find him annoying, especially on The Office. But he and Tina Fey worked well together, and the unexpected cameos of Mark Wahlberg and James Franco put a smile on my face. 7/10

Spy Kids 3D: Game Over: There are no words to describe how much I hated this movie. It’s honestly one of the worst films I’ve seen in my life, and I’ve seen over 1,000. To think that this piece of garbage came from the same mind that thought of Machete is simply mind blasting, as Russell Peters would say. The acting was horrible, even when you consider the fact that they’re kids, and the storyline was laughable and riddled with plot holes. How they got Salma Hayek, Sylvester Stallone, George Clooney, Antonio Banderas and Elijah Wood to sign on to this is a mystery to me.

Whew, that’s a long list. Kudos to those of you who read through the whole thing!

Evil_Genius_27 - I’m one of those crazy Princess and the Frog fiends! I understand, though. When you have movies like Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, and Aladdin, there are high expectations set for princess movies! I see what you mean.

I love Julie & Julia as well!

Well, you see, I’ve never been a huge fan of the classic Dinsey princess movies. Pretty much the only one I remember really liking is Beauty and the Beast. Others, like Sleeping Beauty, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and Cinderella never interested me much. I prefer the old Disney movies that centered around animals, like The Fox and the Hound (which I watched every day for a year when I was about 5), and the more action-y Disney movies, like Mulan and Hercules. Actually, The Princess and the Frog is probably my second favorite Disney princess movie, and Tiana is definitely my favorite Disney princess. She’s so determined and hard working (maybe a bit too hard working), and I find her the easiest to relate to.
