So, in Disney World I had the oppurtunity to watch two films I had never seen before on the beach at my hotel. T’was wicked fun!
First up: The Princess and the Frog (haha, Evil_Genius_27, we both watched this)
So, I really enjoyed this film. It was so nice to see the return to traditional animation by Disney. The characters overall were wonderful, and I really cared about them. Naveen is absolutely the best Disney Prince ever. He actually has a character, unlike some of the other princeses that are only there to save the day. Naveen is flawed and experiences real growth. Plus, he was funny! Tiana was also a good princess. I like how she has roots and really isn’t a wealthy heiress. My other new favortie character was Louis. Unfortunately, I did not really get Dr. Facilier. He was really well voice-acted and animated, but plot wise, I just wasn’t feeling him. His motivation felt lacking, really. Beyond that, the songs were good overall, but I didn’t really think there was one awesome song that will live in the hearts of Disney lovers forever. As well, despite this film being good overall, I felt it lacked a certain wow factor that left me amazed and moved. I really did it enjoy it, though! It was a lot of fun. 7.5/10
Film number two was: Bolt
Bolt was good. I really don’t have much to say about it. I’m very happy this was a well made computer animated film by Disney. The concept was also nice; I like the idea of the dog not realizing he is on a TV show. Mittens was great and definitely a worthy character. I felt bad for her when she let Bolt move on. Rhino and the pidgeons also provided the best laughs. Unfortunately, I wasn’t really feeling the whole studio burning down thing. An entertaining film overall, though, and not disappointing. 7/10
Props to love70ways and Evil_Genius_27, because I also saw The Princess and the Frog for the first time. I can’t believe this is happening to me. I knew I’d like the film, but I didn’t know I’d love it to the extent of becoming one of those rabid fans as previously mentioned (sorry ellie-jessie-eve ) This is not looking good for my image. I’m losing my credibility as it is by proclaiming to my friends that I happen to enjoy good romances and musicals, and now the fact that I’m a 14 year old guy who loves The Princess and the Frog? Curse you, Disney!
Seriously, though…the animation, music/songs, and characters were all good. I even have got to admit that Tiana in frog form was kid of hot - not that I’m suggesting anything…um… What really surprised me, though, was just how smart the film was. Both in its writing and delivery. I’m not just talking about the usage of several hidden references, I mean the story was very well put together. There were a lot of moments that I never expected, and the story of Ray was just devestating (because he was my favorite character). The moment we see what became of him I was, like, yah! Destroy that jerk of a Shadowman! Tear him limb from limb! [spoil]But dragging him to an eternity in a voo-doo version of Hell works, too. [/spoil] In conclusion, screw it - I give it a 9/10 (and I rarely rate a film so high, I swear)
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to lock myself in my room and question my manliness.
Ha, I’m glad you’re such a fan! It’s funny how many members have seen it this week, and I love your review! Ray was my favorite character as well! And going to New Orleans this summer only made me like this movie even more, you should see all of the Princess and the Frog memoribilia I have!
And, don’t worry, I know a few guys my age (18 years old) who love this movie as well!
These two are a dream team together. This is one very funny movie, definitely made funnier by this duo’s comedic chemistry. I really laughed throughout the entire film. It did get a little wierd at one point towards the end, but if you want to laugh, check this one out. James Franco, Mark Wahlberg, and Mila Kunis also have really great small roles. This movie is funny and enjoyable, though it may not be the funny movie you remember forever. 8/10
I wanna watch this, Cop Out and Clash of the Titans since they’re out on DVD now and I gave them a miss in theatres.
I’m also eager to see Cats & Dogs 2: The Revenge of Kitty Galore and Vampires Suck, but on DVD.
I’m still waiting for an opportunity when I don’t have any assignments to go see Inception. And I’m going for a charity screening this weekend to watch Despicable Me.
The Dark Crystal: A Curious George: B Spy Kids: A- (I was really surprised, but I know the third one stinks). The Nutty Professor (1996): B+ The Road to El Dorado: B+ Antz: A The Missing Lynx: C-
I’ve watched three movies in the past, like, 18 hours…
Watchmen - So, I read the graphic novel two years ago and had always wanted to check out the film. I got it from Netflix finally, after it sat in my qeue for a while. It was a very good adaptation. It was so true to the original source! I felt like the novel literally went from a comic on a page to a comic come to life. For the most part I really liked the casting, and those actors that I thought were well cast did a very good job. The film keeps Alan Moore’s message about the human condition alive and well, and I think that this is a good place to look when analyzing what it means to be human. The style of the film is really great, very dark and gritty. Unfortunately, the film is kind of slow at first, and a bit boring. The excitment does pick up, though! It just takes a while. Thus, I give this an 8/10. Certainly good and well made, but as a film, it didn’t feel all that impressive.
Like Mike - This is a favorite from my elementary school days. It stars Lil Bow Wow, the kid from The Little Vampire and Stuart Little, and Brenda Song (I’m pretty sure that was her). If you don’t know the plot, basically a boy finds some Nike sneakers on a wire, climbs up to get them, is electricuted, and then the shoes give him the basketball skills equivalent to the great Michael Jordan. Bow Wow’s rap is one of the most memorable things to come out of the film: “Basketball is my favorite sport, I like the way dribble up and down the court” This is a great family movie, it is fun, and even has a good message about making friends and what makes a family. I feel weird giving a grade, so I will just say “two really fun thumbs up!” If I hadn’t really liked it as a kid, I probably wouldn’t have enjoyed it as much this morning.
i Days of Summer[/i] - What a wonderful movie! I just love it so much! This was my second viewing, just so everyone knows. I can’t believe this didn’t earn a Best Picture nom at the Oscars last year. Everything about this film is great, especially Joseph Gordon-Levitt. I love how stylized the film gets at points, jumping between fantasy and reality. I love how the colors are chosen so perfectly and employed so well. I love the musical choices. I love the author’s notice at the beginning. I love how the film moves back and forth in time. I love how the image presenting the day so brilliantly reflects Tom’s emotions. I love the costume designer. I love how natural Zooey Deschanel feels as summer. I love how it isn’t a love story. I love her smile. I love her hair. I love her knees. I love how she licks her lips before she talks. I love her heart-shaped birthmark on her neck. I love it when she sleeps… Really, everyone needs to see this. It is one of the most refreshing films in a long time. 9.5/10
I gotta agree with you about i Days of Summer[/i], love70ways. I loved that movie so much, I’m still kinda planning on getting it on DVD, even though that was, like, a year ago or something. But, you’re right, it totally deserved a Best Picture nomination.
Yay! mo is my new favorite person… I had to beg my parents to buy me the Blu-ray for Christmas. I dropped so many hints, it was crazy. I’m so glad they came through!
I just watched The Triplets of Belleville, a French animated film from 2003, and I really loved it. The plot is very simple, but what makes the movie are the subtle humor and detailed animation and art.
But, if anyone understands French, I need some help. There’s two lines at the end that were in French, so I didn’t get them at all. If anyone out there could figure it out, I’d be very grateful.
The most recent movie I watched for the first time was North by Northwest (1959). Directed by Alfred Hitchcock and stars Cary Grant. I loved it, I think it’s one of the greatest movies ever made. 9/10
wipes off rotten tomatoes from face after being pelted by an angry mob of Cars fans
However, all that is about to change, because I’m going to ask my mom to buy it for me tomorrow (we can only go to the American store in Italy about once a month, and I’m not going this time). If she follows through, my Pixar movie collection will be complete! I’ve been planning to rewatch the movie for a long time now, anyway.
Amazing movie there, Bryko614. Here’s a rough translation for you:
Madame de Souza voice over (from the beginning of the movie): Is that it, then? Is it over?
Champion: I think that’s probably it. It’s over, Grandma.
