Movies - both new and old

I just saw Vampires Suck. It was better than I expected. Then again, I didn’t expect much.

I refuse to see Vampires Suck. I’m so sick of parodies that come out these days. I don’t understand why they can’t make decent parodies like Airplane or Scary Movie. :unamused:

I’m seeing Despicable Me tomorrow.

The Great Muppet Caper: A
Muppets from Space: D+ (Too much slapstick humor and pop culture references, a cliche story that started off as original, so they ruined it, and worst of all: There is no chemistry between Kermit and Miss Piggy.)

New movie!

Pulp Fiction

Oh. My. Goodness.

This movie blew my mind in so many ways. I just don’t even know how to review it other than to say it is so good. I think I just really loved the script. Quentin Tarantino knew what he was doing with this movie, and Uma Thurman was just brilliant. Brilliant. It is a crazy film, but you will enjoy the ride. 9.5/10

Did you like it? I loved it!

Anyway, the movies I’ve seen in theatres this year so far are:

  • The Princess and the Frog (my second viewing)
  • Fantastic Mr. Fox
  • How to Train Your Dragon
  • Alice in Wonderland
  • Toy Story 3 (second viewing)
  • Despicable Me

It probably doesn’t sound like that much to some of you, but it’s a lot for me! I think I like them all (though I wasn’t sure how to feel about Tim’s Alice).

I wanna see Despicable Me so bad! And Toy Story 3! And also Alice in Wonderland. In that order.

I plan to see Despicable Me with family, Toy Story 3 with church friends, and Alice in Wonderland with school friends.

Has anyone here seen Hearts and Souls? Recently watched it, and loved it. Funny, touching, inspiring, creative, bit exciting. Practically a classic.

I watched Starship Troopers today, and I was surprised to find I liked it! It was in my step-dad’s pile of movies, and I just grabbed it cause I was bored. He’s into really cheesy sci-fi movies, so that’s all I expected when I decided to watch this one. But the acting, story, and script were much better than I anticipated. Considering it came out in 1997, the effects aren’t too shabby either. Plus, Neil Patrick Harris is in it. <3 Worth a solid 8/10 in my book.

I have to agree with Leirin about Tim Burton’s Alice. I didn’t like it as much as I thought I would, but I can’t exactly pinpoint why. I think it was just too weird. I guess I should have expected the weirdness, seeing as that’s how the book was…then again, I didn’t care for the book either. Tim Burton can only do so much I guess. 8D

Oh, heck yeah! To paraphrase Anton Ego, I didn’t love it, I adore it!

Yup, that’s about the right order for me. Despicable Me is super-cute, Toy Story 3 is super-emotional, and Alice is super-weird.

Also the fact that the moral-message is contradictory. Alice is anti-authoritarian and anti-fatalist, [spoil]but in the end, she doesn’t have a choice in her destiny. Not to mention the Jabberwocky is a one-dimensional villain who appears too late in the game with no purpose except being a monster to be slayed. Maybe if it was more animalistic and didn’t talk, I wouldn’t have mind its demise as much, but it felt too ‘intelligent’ just to be knocked off like that.[/spoil]

My holidays have begun, and I have a couple of free movie vouchers to burn (from answering surveys and signing up with my student union). I have plans to catch Avatar for the last time in IMAX (the Special Edition re-release), Inception (a movie I’ve been putting off since forever), The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and The Other Guys.

Good point there, TDIT! I didn’t even really realize it until you pointed it out, but the Jabberwocky did leave a bad taste in my mouth, for all the reasons you mentioned.

I watched The Devil’s Advocate yesterday, a movie I’ve been dying to see for ages. It was good, I enjoyed it. But watching Al Pacino act next to Keanu Reeves was a bit jarring. Pacino was fantastic, of course, but Reeves…well, let’s just say his acting has been described as “rather stoic” for a reason. 8D

Next up for me is O Brother, Where Art Thou? and Requiem for a Dream, another film I’m very excited to see.

Oh, Keanu Reeves…

Yep, you summed it up perfectly!

Agreeing about the Jabberwocky. The entire plot felt like it was contriving too much of Lewis Carroll’s books instead of showing them for how they are. I enjoyed it I guess, but I was expecting more out of Burton.

I usually only go to the cinema to see films that I’ve been eagerly awaiting. So I only see a select few every year. This year has been:

Iron Man 2
Toy Story 3
(twice)
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
Predators

I hadn’t been previously interested in Predators, but a close friend had been waiting excitedly to see it and took me along. It turned out to be much better than I expected.

I now can’t decide whether I’m excited enough about Tomorrow When the War Began and The Social Network to see them at the cinema or whether I’ll just wait for the DVDs. I haven’t read the Tomorrow books in a great many years so I barely remember it (though I loved it at the time), and I’m a huge Aaron Sorkin fan but his previous movies haven’t really been cinema-worthy. He’s better at TV shows.

In regard to Despicable Me, the little henchmen are like immitation Raving Rabbids. It bugs me every time I see a commercial or trailer for it.

The Rescuers Down Under: B+
Wayne’s World: A-
Charlie Chaplin’s Modern Times: A-

That is so true! :open_mouth: I never made that connection!

Alright guys, I have a dilema. Should I go watch Scott Pilgrim vs. the World tommorow, or should I see Inception a second time? I honestly can’t decide between the two. :~o

Well, I do reccomend seeing Inception a second time…

And it is amazing…but it is always nice to see a new movie and expand your cinematic library. I haven’t seen Scott Pilgrim yet, but I have heard mixed reviews for it.

Seeing you’re Aussie, I’d recommend you go watch TWTWB, it’s really great that your country has done something of this blockbuster level instead of yet another crime drama or outsourced animation work. I may be an ‘honorary citizen’, but I’m seriously considering watching TWTWB in cinemas just to show my support. It’s been a long time since Australia has done a science-fiction film since Mad Max, and we need to tell the film industry here to take on more of these courageous ventures. Personally, I despise Facebook, so I’m not exactly excited to see an entire doco made about it. :unamused:

Believe me, they’re a lot more intelligent and a lot less annoying. But don’t take my word for it, watch the movie (if on DVD) and judge for yourself.

Has anyone seen The Sorcerer’s Apprentice or The Other Guys and can vouch for their merit?

My mom just bought Night at the Museum on DVD, haven’t seen the whole movie start to finish in a long time, so I’m looking forward to seeing it again.
