Cool, I’ve seen all these movies. I loved Bobby as well, and how all these different stories are joined together by a common tragic event. I’d probably give it a B+. Ditto for Princess Mononoke, but I’d bump it up to a solid A. As for MVA, the less said the better.
I saw Requiem for a Dream, finally. I can honestly say, this movie is right up there with Trainspotting and The Road as the most depressing movie ever made. Ellen Burnstyn was amazing as Sara Goldfarb, and as much as I loved Julia Roberts in Erin Brokovich, I really think Ms. Burnstyn deserved the Oscar.
Ooh, I like Mononoke. Kind of dry at times or long, but still very good! Agreeing with you about MVA - I didn’t have high hopes for it, but sheesh, it doesn’t deserve to be in the 70s for its RT score.
Anyway, got to watching Watership Down at midnight. I liked it quite a bit, even if it seemed needlessly gory - I don’t think rabbits splurt that much blood! I was impressed by the surreality of the situations and use of Art Garfunkel music, though. It seemed to work pretty well.
I saw it recently and I completely agree. However, I must give it credit for one thing - it was the first DreamWorks animated film to actually get a laugh out of me. I wonder though how much credit they should actually get for that laugh (it was all in the delivery of the voice actor, Stephen Colbert, and me imagining him as President in real life):
The President: So that’s how you want to play it? Eat lead, alien robot!
[Shoots at robot; nothing happens]
President: Evidently, they eat lead.
Secret Service Man: Get him on the chopper!
The President: I’m brave! I am a brave president!
I seriously feel like that movie was wiped from my mind after seeing it, because I don’t remember a thing about it.
2012: B, I’m really surprised, but I liked this film a lot. By far the best work of the director (yes, I don’t like Independence Day).
Movies to watch: Battle Royale…still, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets…again, and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World…eventually.
Easy A
Really great movie. It is super funny and well acted across the board. Stanley Tucci absolutely is the funniest actor in it; he stole the movie! Plus, all the Scarlett Letter and Huck Finn references are great. This movie rolls with the spirit of Mean Girls and ends like your classic teen comedy.
I liked Independence Day better, IMHO. 2012, while boasting spectacular special-effects, felt like a ‘snuff movie’ in the same vein as Prince of Persia. Too many people die gruesomely for no reason, while there were at least a few in Independence Day who did so for a higher purpose (to save mankind, etc.). I don’t know, I just really hated 2012 because it was so melodramatic, while ID felt more rousing and exciting.
love70ways: I’m not much a fan of teen movies, but from your review, it sounds better than I expected. But did they really have to use Lady Gaga in the trailers?
You have to add Forrest Gump to this list, too! (Are you the one who said you haven’t seen it?)
Ponyo (7/10) - Sadly this is Miyazaki’s weakest work so far. It is much more strictly geared towards children than all his other films, and the little plot it has looks even more like swiss cheese than Porco Rosso’s.
I agree, Flister, that part was funny.
Whisper of the Heart: B- Very good over all, and the part about the Baron and Baroness made me cry, but it seemed very drawn out.
Jurassic Park III - B-
The Grinch - C
The Golden Compass - A
Coming Soon: Citizen Kane and The Lost World: Jurassic Park
Really? A C for The Grinch?
I need to see Citizen Kane as well soon!
Did you think it was good or bad? I didn’t think Carrey’s performance was very believable.
TAMATER: Perhaps e-j-e thought you were referring to the original animated one?
I just watched Amélie, a beautiful film! One of the most feel-good movies I’ve ever seen, definitely worth a 9/10. And since my other post seems to have disappeared/been deleted, I’ll just throw it out there: I didn’t really like The Town. I gave it a 6/10. Enjoyable, but nothing spectacular.
Nope, I was referring to the Jim Carrey version. I don’t know why I enjoy that movie so much. I think it’s because my friend and I love to quote it! But I understand why you gave it a C, not Carrey’s best performance. Or the best movie, at that. It’s just a lot of fun to watch!
I love The Grinch!
Guys, watch Citizen Kane. Not my favorite, but it is remarkable.
Rosebud
Rosebud was spoiled for me years in advance…
I saw this weird movie about Orson Welles where it said that Rosebud was really the guy’s wife’s [spoil]private parts[/spoil]. Please tell me this isn’t true?
Rosebud [spoil]was his sled[/spoil], as far as I know.
