That’s what I thought, too, but I never saw the movie so I wouldn’t know.
That’s what Citizen Kane says, but an OW bio says it’s Kane’s wife’s you-know-what.
I tried watching Citizen Kane on a plane once. I gave up after about fifteen minutes. Could be because I was jetlagged. Maybe should give it another shot.
So the trailer for Tyler Perry’s For Colored Girls has been released. A tad melodramatic and overtly emotional, but it might be this year’s Precious. For me, my favourite bit is at 1:22…
I watched The Brave Little Toaster the other day, and I must say, corny as it was, I liked it quite a bit. It’s definitely not the cheery little kid’s movie it presents itself as… I drew some comparisons to it with Toy Story 3, which it undoubtedly influenced. Good animation, good voices, etc. I’d recommend it for the open-minded.
I also saw Iron Man, the first one. It’s a good movie. The actors have very believable performances, and the story isn’t too hard to follow.
Yes indeed, The Brave Little Toaster is an incredible cult classic way ahead of its time. Citizen Kane is in fact the best non-Pixar movie ever made! Just give it a chance and I’ll guarantee even if you don’t think it’s #1, you will still enjoy it.
9: B+
Battle Royale: A+ (One of my favorite movies ever)
Forrest Gump: N/A
The Last Airbender: F-
Curious to see what you’ll think of The Last Airbender, Chuckles, considering how critically panned it was…
Whisper of the Heart: A-: Very emotional, very heartfelt, but slightly boring in areas. Great flick. I felt like I really related to Shizuku…
The Cat Returns: B-: I enjoyed this one, but it was more action and less emotion. I really liked it.
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind: A+: I love this movie! It was great, and I really like Nausicaa.
Despicable Me: 8/10 (see this thread)
The Dark Knight: 5/10 - Now that’s more what I call despicable. Somehow this film crossed a line for me, I do not want any film to cross. It’s almost as if the Joker gave it a little push, [spoil]just like Harvey Dent[/spoil].
Inception is so much better.
Raiders of the Lost Ark: A
Yeah, I’d never seen it before. But it was such a cool, exciting movie. Watching Temple of Doom ASAP.
Aw… why so serious, totoro? Is it because of the moral ambiguity, the social commentary or the superhero angst? Or maybe the Joker’s jokes were bad…
I watched Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole in IMAX 3D today with a mate. I’ll post a lengthier review, but it was mostly epic with one or two minor quibbles. I give it 8 out of 10 pellets.
On Sky Movies by any chance?
As I was watching it before (for like the 50th time) also - on Sky Movies. xD
Awesome, you’re going through the Ghibli movies! I’ve yet to see The Cat Returns. Nausicaa is one of my favorites!
^Yes. I feel that my life is missing the Ghibli Anime films, and my friend Casey is a Hayao Miyizaki nut. She’s loaning them to me, and I’ve loved each one so far.
totoro (the member XD), I love you now. Finally, someone besides Pixarinho* and myself who hasn’t jumped on the bandwagon! Now, I’ll admit to having seen movies because they were popular, but that’s a terrible reason to like something. Everyone on this forum hates me for it, but I despise TDK. Watch Avatar if you want to see a hugely popular, possibly over rated movie that’s good and watchable.
Sorry for my rant, but I’m tired of bandwagon movies. Like what you want, but don’t conform just to do so.
Amen to that! I haven’t seen more than the first few minutes of The Dark Knight (it was Christmas morning '08, we were too busy opening presents ) but I truly despise it when everyone’s rolling on the popularity of movies just because.
^Exactly! Being acclaimed and popular can’t make up in the area of quality and heart, I don’t care who you are. Besides, I’m old fashioned, and I had issues with where TDK was going…
Several of the Joker-related scenes were just, for lack of a better word, sick. E.g. [spoil]the living bomb[/spoil].
I’d rather watch though the “stomach contents meets wig” scene in a certain Korean comedy than having to see that again.
And the whole film was dead depressing, too. The end just felt like [spoil]Joker had more or less won, with Batman being forced to become an outcast[/spoil].
Dark Knight, indeed. Way too dark for my taste.
Hmm… fairy 'nuff. What is this Korean comedy, BTW?
SPOILERS ahead.
It’s sort of like The Passion of Christ for superhero movies. Batman basically sacrificed himself for the greater good of Gotham.I thought there were moments of brilliance from the Joker (like the infamous ‘Pencil Trick’, the bit where he throws wine out of the glass before drinking it, and the nurse outfit) that outweighed the mean bits like the multiple kidnaps and murder. And the action sequences are second to none in terms of scale and cinematography.
I also suppose the fact that the Joker has a nihilistic streak and still beats the ‘hero’ in the end might not appeal to those who dislike moral ambiguity or are looking for a happy ending, but I kind of liked the message of Alfred’s message of not giving up, even if the situation looks grim or futile. It’s what we stood for, no matter whether we won or lost in the end.
Oh man, how could I ever forget “The Pencil Trick”?
Two interesting movies coming this December starring actors from Legend of the Guardians:
Warrior’s Way - If you thought that it wasn’t possible to mash-up a spaghetti western with a ninja epic, well, that day has come. Geoffrey Rush of Captain Barbossa and Nigel the Pelican fame plays an American sheriff who gets an unexpected savior when an army of ninjas lay seige to his town.
The Tempest - An adaptation of Shakespeare’s final play. They changed the gender of sorcerer so that the lovely Helen Mirren can lay waste to an island inhabited by Russell Brand and Djimon Honsou.
