I thought it was cute. Not totally laugh out loud funny (but then I dont laugh all that easily) but it was very cute nonetheless. I thought for sure [spoil]that bird was leaving to pick up babies from another cloud[/spoil] so I was really happy [spoil] that he decided to stick around[/spoil]
I found it to be alright…it did hit me emotionally towards the end and lots of people laughed and applauded after the short eneded. It also really makes me happy to know that Peter Sohn directed it. I loved his work in Ratatouille (he also voices Emile) and WALL-E and I’m glad to see him in doing much more.
I thought Partly Cloudy was good. Not Pixar’s best, but still good.
I think the problem with Partly Cloudy was I thought it seemed almost incomplete. By that I mean the ending. The punchline at the end, just did not seem like it should have ended as soon as it did. It felt like the film could have gone on at least a few more minutes before wrapping up the film for what could have became a satisfying ending.
Don’t get me wrong, Partly Cloudy is a really good Pixar short film, but I think Pixar has definitely made better short films.
I knew I was going to cry during UP, this was expected but Partly Cloudy caught me off guard and I started to tear up when [spoil]the story leaves his cloud to go to another one[/spoil]. I was really surprised with myself. Its not my favorite short, nor their best, but I think it delivered.
Not sure if this was reported elswhere, but like most of Pixar shorts, “Partly Cloudy” is available for purchase on iTunes. I’m pretty sure this is only the case for the US store.
That being said, Looking back at it now, it’s not all too bad. I really like the Title design, and the score is very nice. Animation is great as always. I think the reason it’s not sitting right with some people is because we’ve had shorts like Lifted and One Man Band that were soooo over-the-top amazing that we’re trying to put Partly Cloudy up to that standard.
I don’t think that’s the reason, AJD08.
The reason why a lot of people are criticizing Partly Cloudy is not because it’s not on par with Lifted or One Man Band, but because the ending just didn’t seem complete.
Sure the film ended fine, but for most people, the punchline just was not as satisfying as the rest of the film, and that just kinda left a dry tatse for most people.
One of the toughest things for anyone, whether you are writing an essay, or making a movie - is coming up with a proper conclusion. When you think of it, the ending of a film HAS to be satisfying or else (No matter how good the rest of the film might have been) it will leave a bad impression on people. Why? Because the conclusion is what people will remember most.
Since Partly Cloudy didn’t have a strong conclusion compared to the rest of the film, it left people with somewhat empty thoughts towards the rest of the film.
Don’t get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed Partly Cloudy. I just don’t think it’s their best short film compared to others that did indeed have satisfying endings.
I went to a late night showing of UP (on purpose) and the people in the theater were cracking up at the humor in the short. Yep, there was a deafening “Awwwww” in the theater as the baby animals were revealed, especially the kittens, and people applauded the climax of the film. Perhaps because I was amongst an older audience, mostly college-age and up in the crowd that night, that the film was well-received.
The story is a little slower to get going in this short than in the previous shorts though, and to get the most out of the film I feel one needs to focus most upon [spoil]the frustration of the stork[/spoil], and once he resolves that for himself, the way in which he does so is both satisfying and humorous.
This is easily one of my favorite Pixar shorts, but that’s just me.
I’d have to say that it wasn’t one of my favorite shorts, but it definitely deserves praise because it is good. It did kinda feel shorter than previous shorts… but it served as a good opener for Up considering it kept the same theme going into the movie.
But I didn’t feel like it was lacking. It’s a Pixar short and I’m not one to expect a lot from the intro, just from the movie itself. Plainly saying it is something we’ve all come to expect from Pixar and I think it’s definitely above par, and it’s better than some full-length animations, being that it’s only… I think 3-4 minutes long.
Well, I really can’t speak for everyone; but for me, I just didn’t think the ending was as strong as the rest of the short.
I know the film concluded, which is just fine, but I felt it came a little quick and ended quick.
Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed Partly Cloudy and laughed tons too, very much so, but I just didn’t think it was the best Pixar short ever.
Although Lifted stills holds the top spot in my list of favorite Pixar short films, Partly Cloudy has still succeeded in claiming fifth place. If I didn’t love some of the older shorts so much it would be in second place. That said, it seems as if I must be in the minority here. I really did love this film, which is surprising, as I didn’t expect it to deliver on the get-go.
Storywise, I can understand how some felt that it was left on a hinge and/or incomplete. It was satisfying enough on the whole, although I wasn’t exceptionally pleased with the conclusion, which wasn’t as strong as it could have been.
The animation is something which deserves praise in itself, and the pastel-like colors and inviting hues effectively compliment the basic plot, in my opinion. I particularly love the work done on Gus the cloud – absolutely adorable.
As for the humor, it was traditional and recycled, but greatly amusing nonetheless. I was laughing my head off for a good portion of the film.
Overall, I loved it much more than I thought I would. For a first try at directing, I think that Peter Sohn did a swell job. Many congratulations to the cast and crew of Partly Cloudy!
Today, I made it onto Entertainment Weekly’s Must List (their weekly list of the things they love) for the eleventh(!!) time with my little piece – as in, one-sentence – I wrote about “Partly Cloudy”.
haha, what I loved about Partly Cloudy, was the idea. I never really thought of the “storks delivering babies” would involves clouds that shape you. haha. The animation was really gorgeous too!
Well Partly Cloudy is now available on iTunes for purchase.
So you pretty much have to option of buying the short film, or paying again to see it in theaters, or waiting for the Up DVD/Blu-Ray.
