Pfff. Here we go:
Pets I used to have -
- 9 rats (eight at one time)
Wild animals that used to visit our backyard
constantly -
- 4-6 scrubjays
- 6-10 squirrels (first generation to fourth
generation)
- 18 opposums (first generation to third/fourth generation)
- 2 ground squirrels
- 12
house mice
- 2 woodrats
- 10+ wildrats (Norwegian, etc.)
- 1 frog/toad
Animals
(wild and pets) that currently visit our backyard -
-
2 opposums (third/fourth generation)
-
2-4 squirrels (fifth generation)
-
2-3 scrubjays (third/fourth generation)
-
2 house cats (my
neighbor’s cats)
Opposums - The opposums first came to our backyard not a
few years ago – a male (Amos) and a female (Angie), in succession. We fed them table scraps, yogurt, and – once
in a great while – sushi, so that they finally became comfortable enough to move into our garage. Those two got
pretty close, and they next thing we knew…Angie had seven little babies. Mom and I got to hold them (and the
mother) and took them to a rehabilitator so as they could get a few shots. They were then taken back to our home,
where Angie’s litter grew up and had another litter, which then grew up and had their own babies, which now
reside in our backyard.
Angie and her litter were quite friendly to me, as were the second generation
of opposum intruders. I got them to eat from my hand, but that was as far as I ever did get.
Scrubjays - Every scrubjay that has come to our backyard has been christened
“Scrubby”, simply because it is easy to remember and because they all look alike – heheh. We have, so
far, had at least three generations of these blue and white birds visit our household, and they are all quite
friendly. Most of them will crack open a nut while standing only a couple of feet away from us, and some of them
will eat of my hand.
Squirrels - The squirrels used to be quite friendly,
until our neighbor purchased a couple of kittens…who scared all of the fuzzballs away. However, I still see one
or two visit our yard every once in a while, although…they are scared to the bone when the come in contact with
a human/predator.
In succession, the generations of extremely friendly squirrels that used to visit us
are:
First Generation - Chunky/Peanut; Jonathan; Mama
Risu
Second Generation - Pitter, Patter, and Jonathan Jr. (J.J.); Stumpy
Third Generation - Jonathan Jr. Jr. (J.J.J., or Jonathan Frederick Theodore);
various other baby squirrels
Fourth Generation - Mama and
babies
Fifth Generation - Various baby squirrels
“Stumpy”, so
named because of his short-cut tail, still visits the yard every once in a while. He was always rather
scatter-brained and didn’t like people very much. Jonathan Jr. was the friendliest of the squirrels, and would
be so bold as to go outside my window and chatter until he got his peanuts. (snigger)
When we had the
digustingly abandoned pool, a crane (or was it a heron?), a frog/tadpoles, and various other critters used to
inhabit the so-called “backyard jungle and pond”. We even had a coyote visit our yard once back
then…
We have also had to take quite a few wild animals to the vet, as they were either injured from an
attack or other threat…and needed immediate attention. The baby crow was one example – he had to stay at our
house overnight.
I guess you could just say that our backyard is like a jungle; it sure looks like one.
Not to mention, you can probably tell that my family and I are huge animal lovers.

gottalovepixar - Woah – that’s alot of pets! How do you take care of
them all?
