Phobias

Any one here really scared of something?

For me: Wasps. I just can’t stand those things! Even Bees are okay, I don’t know, they just freak me out! :open_mouth:

I have trypanophobia , which is fear of needles and shots …

here’s the page from wikipedia : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trypanophobia

glp – Aww, man! That stinks!

…mine pales in comparison!

gottalovepixar: Same here. I can’t even look at them on television when there are medical reports on the news. I just turn away. shudders

You are not alone, Gasduude. I love insects, but I hear buzzing and I run for the hills, man. :shake:

~~=oP

Deep water, when you can’t see the bottom.

i.e. scuba diving

Earthquakes. My life is full of them because I live in NZ, which is directly between two tectonic plates… :open_mouth:;;

^^ How exciting

I don’t have any true phobias, since not all fears, or even strong fears, are actually phobias, though I DO have two that probably come pretty close. One used to be a phobia, actually, to the point that I could absolutely not control it and could not control my reactions to it, which meant it had taken over ME, and that was brontophobia, a fear of storms. Lightning and wind have always made me nervous, to say the least, but after enduring a Catagory 4 hurricane, alone, in a small house back in 1989, that blossomed into a full-blown phobia, for which I eventually wound up having to seek professional treatment. Now, I guess I’m back to my “pre-Hugo” state-I still don’t like going through a storm, and they still put me very much at unease, but I don’t go into the sort of uncontrollable panic that I used to at the sound of thunder. I am still very much fascinated by them, and can watch hours on end on The Discovery Channel or National Geographic Channel about storms, whether it’s thunderstorms, hurricanes or tornadoes, and during the worst of my situation I could not have even done that.

I’ve also had, for as long as I can remember, almost-a fear of my house burning down. It’s odd, since it’s not so much a fear of it burning down with ME in it, as of coming home from work, or somewhere, to find it either engulfed in flames or to find a smoldering heap where it used to be. The sight of a smoke plume(particularily a narrow black plume, as this usually indicates a structure fire as opposed to a forest/brush fire, or a field of stubble being burned off) rising from the horizon in what appears to be the general direction of where I figure my house would be while I’m driving will really set me on edge. Of course, I know that it’s VERY difficult to accurately judge distance and direction of smoke; most of the time, the origin turns out to be in a completely different place than where I live and is often MUCH further away. I think that this fear/anxiety got started when I was a little kid, about four, and I was riding home in my family’s car one night when my father spotted that tell-tale red glow in the sky that meant something was on fire. He followed it to investigate, and we discovered that it was a small house that had been occupied by a family of share croppers. The house was completely engulfed, and even the car parked next to it had caught fire. We couldn’t see any people, so my father assumed that they’d all either been away, or had gotten out and gone to safety. Somehow though, I knew that a child had burned up inside, even though we could see no one, and the house was already collapsing. A few days later I overheard some of the grownups talking about it, and that a little kid DID burn up inside; the other family members had gotten out but had been unable to locate him, and had to wind up saving themselves. It left quite an impression on my four-year-old psyche, to fully understand just what fire could do.

Gasduude : What stinks even more is that a year ago , I had to get 7 stitches in my ear , and my ear wouldn’t numb , so they had to put like 50 needles in . I was screaming my head off , and they had to hold me down …

Pitbulllady : Sometimes I get afraid that my house is gonna be robbed or something when it’s just me and my parents are away and I have to go to bed … not really like your fear , but it has to do with my house !

Well I’ve mentioned it on more than one occasion, but-bugs. I cant stand to even look at them. Especially spiders. It takes a lot for me to buck up the nerve to take a tissue and kill one. And bees. Seeing a bee somewhere definitely sends me running. Which I know, you shouldnt do, because they’re attracted to movement, but I cant help it.

Ow! I’ve never had stitches, hopefully never will!

…I feel sorry for you! (hugs)

lennonluvr9 – Right. Whenever I come across a wasp (which is fairly often) I just start running like mad (and screaming like a little girl)…they usually chase me for a while, which makes me run even faster, and so on… :unamused:

Since I adore Steve Irwin, I’ve always hated the idea of disliking any animals, since he treated every single one with the utmost respect. Yet, no matter how much I think of him when I see a spider or an insect, I still feel scared. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m not too keen on heights either really, but I wouldn’t say it’s a phobia. I think I could pretty much grit my teeth and bare most things…

Did you know that some (if not all) are attracted to soda too? Especially coke sodas. Trust me, being chased by a bee is not a happy experience. :shake:

Bugs and mice just kinda irk me. It’s the small scurring thing that gets to me. But only in enclosed spaces like in buildings. Outside doesn’t bother me much.

I have a small fear of heights too, I jus kinda imagine worst cast scenario happening all the time. It’s kinda ironic though since I’m tall.

So when you really get down to it, I don’t have any phobias.

I’m terrified of heights.

I am terrified of butterflies and moths. Long story…

You can laugh if you want.

If there is one thing I can’t see in front of me it’s spiders. :shake:

Spiders are a big one too. Not for me, I’m not scared of them per se, but I don’t like them nonetheless. Heights is another one for me as well

Haha – this is a funny topic.

Well…strictly speaking…I’m basically not afraid of anything. Heights? The higher the better. Insects and creepy crawlies? Love 'em. Doctors appointments/needles/surgery and the like? It’s a breeze for me (long story). Mummies and disgusting stuff on television? I can eat chicken while watching those kinds of things… :stuck_out_tongue:

But there are two things that I’m rather terrified of…

One is mirrors. Watch the movie Polterguist and you’ll see what I mean. I can’t look at myself in the mirror without getting the butterflies.
Two is elevators. I’m not claustrophobic at all, but something about being confined in a small, mechanized contraption that could suddenly stop at any time – leaving someone stuck in there – freaks me out. I’ll take the stairs if I can help it.

So yeah – mirrors and elevators. Other than that, I’m ok! Nothing really scares me at all, except for those things… (snigger)

I forgot about elevetors. :open_mouth:

I feel the same way. Especially when I’m on an old one. I’ve almost goten stuck on two, luckily they weren’t that high.

Stairs are a breeze, (as with any athlete), most times I get to where I need to go faster taking the stairs anyway.
