Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Well, it’s good for a director to have a trusted composer, just like Spielberg has Williams (awesome collaboration), but the fact remains that Elfman’s scores don’t work for every type of film.

Well, they technically [spoil]killed Jack in Dead Man’s Chest 8D[/spoil]

But while Johnny Depp loves to play the character, he cites exactly that as his reason for not signing on for a fifth movie yet:

Alfonso Cuaron sounds better for me, my second option would be Raimi, but he might be busy filming OZ

My choices in that list would go like this:

  1. Gore Verbinski: He’s the real deal. I missed his style in[i:2o8qlbjf] On Stranger Tides.[/i:2o8qlbjf] I hope he can return.

  2. Sam Raimi: Awesome with visual effects and a top notch filmmaker (I’m sure the flaws in [i:2o8qlbjf]Spider-Man 3[/i:2o8qlbjf] weren’t his fault)

  3. Alfonso Cuarón: A very competent filmmaker. Awesome in fact. But he screwed the[i:2o8qlbjf] Harry Potter[/i:2o8qlbjf] continuity and I don’t want him to do the same with this franchise.[i:2o8qlbjf] The Prisoner of Azkaban [/i:2o8qlbjf]is my less favorite HP movie, but mostly because of the awful adaptation by Steve Kloves. I think Cuarón’s helming was adequate. And, if he directs it, probably critics will say it’s the best installment, even if it’s the worst, just like what happened with TPOA.

  4. Rob Marshall: His execution of OST wasn’t that good, but at least he has the experience.

  5. Shawn Levy: I think he works very good with humor and visual effects, but I doubt of his artistic capacity to lift the franchise once again.

  6. Tim Burton. Great filmmaker, great chemistry with Depp, great chemistry with the audiences. But I don’t want him. He has a characteristic style that doesn’t fit the franchise. Plus we would have Danny Elfman and Helena Bonham in the movie :-\

  7. Chris Weitz: From [i:2o8qlbjf]New Moon[/i:2o8qlbjf]? Seriously? And he also killed [i:2o8qlbjf]His Dark Materials.[/i:2o8qlbjf]

^ really???,imo, Prisoner of Azkaban is one of the greatest Harry Potter films, and I meet some people who think like that, but also some who hate it

Most people who hate Prisoner of Azkaban are die hard fans of the original novels (like me) amd that one was the second worst adaptation… after Order of the Phoenix.

But at least Azkaban was well crafted, unlike OOTP, which is why a lot of people love it.

I actually really like OOTP, it was a hard book to adapt, and I think they did a decent job of it. I can’t stand the third movie, or the fourth for that matter but that’s just because I don’t like the fourth book.

To me, OOTP was one of the books that had more potential in being adapted. I don’t think it was one of the hardest.

And I can’t agree about their good job in that one. The story, which was very important for the series, was cropped, making the longest book into the shortest movie. Yates’ directing wasn’t any good (luckily he improved after that one). Not even the good visuals were kept in that one, as its FX were horrible.

PS: We’re far off topic now. Back to Pirates!

The length is the reason I think it was hardest to adapt. Your mileage may vary of course.

I know it’s still early, but in terms of reviews and domestic gross, how does Pirates 4 compare to the previous 3?

A new start, and a good one, because now it focuses on everybody’s favourite pirate–Jack Sparrow. No creepy octous-bearded men or hopelessly star-crossed lovers to spoil the fun (though I will miss Oralndo and Keira.) Besides, I like the chemistry of Philp and Syrena much, much more.

What? I understand about Will&Elizabeth, but Davy Jones rocked :frowning:

OK, I have to say I am baffled by all the love for On Stranger Tides here! I LOVED the first three Pirates movies and watch them every year. Two years ago, I actually watched all three, three times in a row. It was intense. But I positively hated this most recent one. I would have left halfway through if I’d been there alone.

I found the plot boring, the mermaids creepy and the writing very dull. I loved the chemistry between Will/Elizabeth and Jack in the first three, and that was gone. Blackbeard just seemed like a random old coot to me. I didn’t like him at all.

Not being as well versed in the backstory as some here, I can’t speak to whether the lack of Gore Verbinski was the main difference, but I can say that this movie will NEVER be added to my Pirates collection. Gag.

I was very happy to see Elizabeth gone, just like I predicted. Anyway, I really liked this one! Less than 2, but more than 3 or 1.

Same here, I didn’t miss her or Will.

Huh? Why ever not? I liked them; they were okay, but it’s best if they leave them for a fourth since their ties ti Jack have officially been cut. Snap.

I liked OST, but never as much as the first three. I guess it was awesome since I, a self-appointed Jackaholic, got quality bonding time with one of my fave fictional people. It’s like a ‘So you think you know Jack Sparrow?’ movie. And apparently, I do not, nt as much as I thought. He aways manages to surprise me.

I agree, and I actually think a FIFTH one is going a little too far.

Well, I hated Elizabeth. So I would never miss her.

I like her A LOT better than the one in the latest movie. [spoil]I like Jack Sparrow!!![/spoil]

I LOVE JAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK!
What’s this I hear of a sixth? A SIXTH?? No way. I never thought I’d say this, but that’s too much Pirates.

Really? I thought Jack finally getting some [spoil]love[/spoil] was good.

So, I wonder. Was Blackbeard really [spoil]Angelica’s father[/spoil], or not?
